There are 45,000 castles in France, unfortunately, it is very difficult for us to renovate and maintain such a large number of properties. Thank you so much for coming to France to help us preserve this heritage.

lol, becuase all the riches were exiled or killed in 1700s during revolution then now france still lives in the mindset of french revolution without rich, nobody can afford to renovate and maintain these properties. and also because they are far away from the city, most of young generation are moving into the cities.

Yes, Chateau de Gudanes in the Pyrenees is a case in point. After five years still no restoration of the facade but plenty of gushing about the chabby chique crumbling interior. All by rich trendy people who think its all so elegant in its decaying state.

video so very interesting but 'well on the way'? does not sound like it. a shame too much ruin in the bldgs on this property. Whoever voted to allow this as a historic site must have been bribed by all the contractors who will charge a fortune to line their pockets next 100 years.

With consistency, love & dedication it will get done. It will take a colossal amount of money to maintain it, but with the restoration at least the next holders/residents (we all residents in this thing called life...here for a "short" while & to the earth we return) will be getting it in great restored condition.

I am guessing that the roof alone will be a million dollars. But that is the first, most important, most critical step to everything that follows. 🇦🇺🌹 The fact that the grande allée has remained, that alone is amazing, it has not been divided into farms etc. Incredible.

If you travel to France from time to time, we are are always open for the weekend of Les Journees du patrimoine (Heritage Open Days) in September. This is a wonderful time to visit. We open as much of the chateau as possible, the weather is normally good, the grounds are carefully prepared and there are many activities and displays by our craftsmen, local bakers etc.

The garment ... emotional 🤍 ... as are the letters. Imagine a global effort to restore our collective past - these precious buildings and ruins. Transformation and healing comes of it. Such a different pathway to politics (I had to say it - Australian here - however moving to Europe too). Your story here, accentuated by your beautiful choice of music, is so touching. Yes your lives are the restoration - ongoing - and I would too. The idea of passing on is comforting - to family, community and France. A legacy. I hope to secure two properties in Slovenia that will need restoration. I watch you, and others, with much respect. Of course I look forward to visiting in the not too distant future. Purnon is so fortunate that you found her.

You should have the suitable oak trees logged and rough cut for the future use. It will take a couple years for them to season (air dry) so they can be used in the restorations to come. Stone walls can be restored enough to keep them from failing. Many many holes in the dice that need fingers to stop the leaks I'm sure. I admire your commitment and support you.

As a fashion historian i was thrilled to see the fragile garment you found in the fabric room and evem though i didn´t see it first hand i can already tell how old it is :D the shape of the sleeves, the waist form and the long down dropping shoulder line indicate that it was made between 1840 - 1860. worn over a bell shaped gown with a full skirt over several layers of starched petticoats if not a crinoline hoop skirt (but these came late in 1856 - 1869ish) ... the lady might have combined it with a spoon bonnet and a silk parasol. if you google ladies fashion of the time I´m sure you will come across some fabulous fashion plates in which you can find similar garments. (here is a thought: take it to a tailor and ask to make a copy of the pattern - tailors can craft you a wearable replica for display or special occasions 🤩)
@treytrip8

Yes! Late 1860s, I think. It looks like a bodice and over-skirt which would have had a coordinating underskirt worn over a crinoline and/or early bustle. I collect 1850s-1860s clothing, so this was especially exciting to see!

Outstanding presentation on the connection between Château de Purnon and FOUR wars of the 19th and 20th centuries! You covered four wars! I especially appreciated your digging into the First World War. Many people would have stopped their research with, "The front was hundreds of miles away, so no impact," but Tim dug deep and learned about the military service of the son of the Marquis. The story about the war in Indochina was fascinating and eloquently described, the German newspapers from the summer of 1940 were extremely cool, and the story about the court martial of the soldier from the Franco-Prussian War will delight visitors to the Château for decades to come! Thank you for this information.

The exterior looks more like the end of the 17th century rather then the 18th century. The high arch of the roof and the stone work and design of the windows all look more like 17th century. Also: Truffe is super cute. And it’s amazing the fabric and letters are still intact after all this time. I would think in that environment they’d have perished long ago. Please consider using some of your state funding for a proper archivist to come in and evaluate and archive the whole collection of papers, if you haven’t yet! They are as much of a treasure as all the physical objects, and worth preserving and making accessible, by a French archivist who can read them and put them in context.

I just have one question. If you live there but have only restored two rooms, is the kitchen restored or usable until you can do it? Have you shown what it looks like in a previous video?
@jtwood4925
@jtwood4925 Год назад
@@kimberlyearly8918 I have not watched any of the other videos so I am not sure. I have a place that I am restoring and sometimes a good portion of a place might not be up to snuff but good enough to live in. It maybe actually better than what other are accustom too. As long as it doesn't have black mold, rats, and bees nests you might overlook a crack in some window glass or doors that don't close. Chateau de Purnon is so beautiful that I could put up with a great deal of dust just to spend a couple nights there. The stories they will have over the next 15 years will be worth putting up with the faded wallpaper and cracked plaster. I'm in the process of restoring a much smaller house for sure. When I remodeled my kitchen I used a hot plate, microwave, and a toaster oven. The most important room is a bathroom. As long as you got hot water and the tub, sink and toilet are not gross it is not a big deal. An old ball claw iron tube is nice, and a funky old sink is fine as long as you don't have separate down spots in the sink.

When we asked what the plan was. I don't think we meant a plan like you described. It was more about what are the priorities. Obviously, the roof first. Then what? Will you want to do more interior rooms? More foundational work like electrical and plumbing like you mentioned. Or saving the stables and chapel?
@rachbryant
@rachbryant Год назад
@M. M. I felt they had made that clear. Maybe i haven't been clear. I meant a list of what ideally THEY want to prioritise. They are in charge of starting the investigative work after all. The timeline after that of course cannot be known. But surely they know as an overview what their priorities are and where they will put their budget first?
Год назад
We are in the process of completing an internal diagnositc and floor plan so we have a clear idea of what will be the use of each room. Once this is completed we can start working on the plumbing & electricity - especially on the ground and first floors.

We own about 23 hectares(which is everything inside the original stone walls of the chateau domain. As well as over a dozen buildings, that land includes prairies which a local farmer bales for hay and lucerne and extensive woods with an English park. The sunflowers that you could see are part of crops sown outside the chateau walls in neighbouring agricultural fields where they rotate crops - canola/rapeseed, wheat, corn (maize), sunflowers etc. We're thrilled you loved the wall papers. So beautiful. Just subscribed to your channel. I've watch a few of these Chateau utube channels. The thing that just breaks my heart 💔 is when new buyers of Chateaux is they remodel it ulta modern😥💔. Instead of restoration its gut wrenching 💔 to see other utube Chateau buyers do that. To each is own , I get that but it's like more of destruction of Chateau rather than restoration. So glad you've restoring it to its original beauty 💕 ❤️ 😍 . Even period reproductions a fakey high boy😘 is better than some steel and pink glass or ulta modern bookshelves😥🤮

You two are absolutely amazing and to be commended for your work in saving this beautiful historic property. It's amazing to me how the French place such a high value on properties such as this and other historical artifacts. In the USA, we are too quick to tear down beautiful buildings and replace them with ugly modern structures that are poorly made and visually uninteresting. Thankfully in some parts of the US there is an effort to same some of these historic properties. We have a lot to learn from the French and people like yourself. I wish I had the millions you need to complete your dream, I'd gladly give it to you. Kudos to you and the best wishes for going forward. I can't wait to watch your progress.

Look into underfloor heating. You lose a few inches but it would be noticeable when the floor are replaced and doors adjusted for the floor height. Underfloor heating can be either electric or hydro.

You know I kind of feel sorry for Australia having lost such a capable MP, but happy for France’s gain to find a partner to restore one of its great unsung chateaux.

I would have also guessed anywhere in the ballpark of 3-12 millions for the main building - depending on how fancy one wants to get - and also, of course depending if furniture is included in the consideration or not. And additional 4-10 millions for the outside grounds. Houses, walls, gardens, pathways. I think it’s a sensible attitude with such projects to make a certain „leap of faith“ - because otherwise, one may never even start. And also, because SOME renovation and rescue is better than none at all. And also (granted I am new to this channel and don’t know the owners), I suppose they have at least enough of a financial background to at least be able to cover the basics. No one with just a hundred thousand euros in their bank account would or could even start such kind of project. Thanks for saving some cultural heritage - and, of course also for letting the broad public take part in your interesting and nourishing journey! ❤

Thank you for your message. Welcome to our adventure. Some of the costs/figures are a little more up-to-date in this more recent video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p_omQnvDXzg.html. Our aim is to save the chateau (obviously the highest priority) and then as many of the outbuildings as our resources (and time) allow us. We look forward to sharing our progress.

This is without a doubt a terrific project and one that needs doing. I adore the French ,lm an unashamed Francophile and although an Australian l have a heritage that goes back to very serious French historical involvement. For our global heritage l believe it is imperative that these global treasures are not lost.lcant see them being repeated and they are shining jewels of humanity’s evolution and occupation of our

Beautiful planet.l urge you to continue but it’s such a huge ask…..However if life is too short and funds don’t suffice there’s much to be said for an inter generational project. Why not do what you-can ,seal sections off, live in it , love it, and pass it on.This has precident from the pyramids to the cathedrals. l don’t want to seem ,negative, on the contrary lm applauding your commitment to something truly noble and in the spirit of……you cannot lose!!!!

Thank you for your message. Your point is quite right. We can't do it all in one generation. This is the observation we make in this video. We'll save as much as we can and leave something for the next generation to preserve, restore and discover.

Excellent, excellent show! I love hearing the history and how Purnon evolved to it's current condition. Of course, I would listen to hours of more information. But I will have to resign myself to soaking it up over time. Though one question I do have burning still is the extent of the property. From the original gate is an entry road. Where does your property end? Is the remaining road protected? Meaning will the line of sight remain over time? And is there any chance or at least a hope of reopening this entry if only for pedestrian or limited use? Thank you and good luck. While it will remain a lot of work, I can't think of anything more rewarding than to save such a place for the future.

Glad you enjoyed it! We are in the process at the moment of planning the grounds and re-opening the main gate is something that we are in the process of assessing!

I think at minimum in preparation for the stabilization of the long buildings might be in order....perhaps digging away at the soil perpendicularly away from the long unsupported side might be something easy to tackle, not horribly expensive and very low risk for causing further movement or damage.
