@@DanielYuck I like how it came out, doesn’t look like I’d have to hit someone up to fix it later 😂 then again I chose a relatively easy design that was mainly lining and stacking lines I’m leaving anything with shading in it to the professionals, which now that I know what a tattoo needle feels like I feel way more comfortable booking an appointment instead 😁
Me too I hated the way the ink worked on the fake skin and the on myself it was more clear with how I needed to stretch the skin, how much certain places hurt, and how deep I was going.
Remember that the average epidermis is 20 micrometers (0.02mm thick). That is 5 times thinner than a sheet of paper. It's almost impossible to tattoo without reaching the dermis. So don't worry about being too shallow.
if it’s too shallow the ink will just fall out when it heals. the epidermis also varies on different places of the body, like eyelids are around 0.02mm but most areas are around 1-2mm and palms can be around 3mm
The average human epidermis is 1.5mm thick. To properly deposit ink, you need to reach the dermis roughly 2mm, if you go to shallow the tattoo will fall out.
I've tattooed myself as an apprentice. My first tattoo was too shallow and literally fell off in parts when healed. Working too shallow should be a major concern for beginners.

Thanks a lot for all of your videos. I was using thicker practice skin at first and I thought I was ready to try on myself. I ended up getting a few barely noticeable blow outs but now I’m switching to thinner practice skin so o can know how far is too far. This video definitely helped me a lot, Thanks a lot!!

Hey man I practiced on myself last night and whilst the stencils I made and art came out good all my lines are a little wonky and in some parts the ink didn't really sit at all. this vid actually helped a lot. if I retry this at some point on myself or practice skin il pay attention to this as I didn't realise that speed and needle depth was super important, kinda seems obvious now I watch this, also realised I have to watch my voltage!
Ahhh so you just dived in, dived in. haha I can't knock or say anything about that as you are your own individual. Furthermore, wonky lines can vary but are typically from lack of experience on the current setup or tattooing in general. Wonky lines can come from not being confident even if we already know how to tattoo, they can come from not being comfortable and the list continues. Wonky lines would be more so on the stability side. When you match your hand speed with a healthy voltage for the application at hand, we will get a more consistent line. I really feel that pulling good lines comes from having a certain calibered skillset combined with a certain level of confidence. I remember my first ever tattoo was a little yoshi on my leg and the lines were wonky I would say because I didn't have those skillsets. Over some time, I developed and now I look forward to tattooing on human skin and my consistency continuously progresses. Awesome videos. I'm new to rotary/pens. Been tattooing on and off since 1995. Did a 3 year apprenticeship in AZ. Made needles built machines(coil) made needles with a jig. I too like to go from needle depth rather than ride the tube. I like how your video is detailed and to the point. These rotary's are lighter less hand fatigue, quieter and just all around better. Guess I need to get with the times. From one artist to another great job. I'm just used to coils.
That sounds like a great and fun tattooing journey. The idea of building and development does cross my mind as I develop software, so my brain naturally works this way. i have been practicing on fake skin for a little while, and decided to do some practice on myself. i have tattooed myself once before and it came out really well! this one did not, lol but this video helped a lot with the issues that i dealt with, so thank you! i think ill get some more practice on fake skin for a while :P

@@DanielYuck Ive been practicing mostly traditional style work, which is my personal favorite, and i feel a good starting point. i think another problem i had was the placement of it, and i couldn't really stretch the skin very well! thank you for the reply and the words of wisdom! @@Forevermore141 ahhh I hear you. Placement can be touch sometimes. I’m big in being comfortable upon tattooing. If I’m not comfortable or I don’t feel stable I will move until I can feel comfortable with the placement. When I stretch skin I use my palms and fingers to get a nice good stretch on the skin. It’s hard if we are tattooing awkwardly or are uncomfortable from the jump. So I get comfortable, find my A to B, stretch and pull the lines. Keep pushing don’t give up! My thought exactly when I first got hand in these fake skins. That surely it is better to practice on these thinner skins, over those 3+mm thick silicone skins. Cause on these you can see your mistakes on the backside. It have been my goal for every one of these I've finished, to not have blow outs on the backside of them. And I can say, it is clear to see a difference from the first skin I tried on, to now 20+ skins later.

The Trick with the Crackling Sound and the needles build a perfekt dot when we are in the dermis are the best Tips i ever heard! I'm always afraid to get tattoos now because my first three tattoos had blowouts, even though I did research before I even went on which people were best. so sad
Oh no! Are the blow outs easy to read upon looking at the tattoo? From what I’ve seen blowouts happen to even the most experienced artists around the world. Sure we can always do our absolute best to not blow anyone out but it can happen and for many reasons. Some examples of blowouts happening can be caused by the certain position the line was pulled, say the tattooist didn’t set comfortably prior to tattooing the line so they went a bit deep over what had been originally anticipated. Another way can be not transitioning to the appropriate depth on certain areas of the skin, can simply apply too much pressure and the list can go on and on. It is unfortunate but can happen to the best of the best.
@@DanielYuck Thanks for the reply! Yeah, my first tattoo on my ribs is really bad. Multiple blowouts, and it's super splotchy now and not well done. I tried to do my research but I should have left after talking to the artist because he was super mean and didn't explain anything to me, and tried to rush through it. I was new to tattoos, though, and didn't know how bad he actually was until I had more experience. The other two are less noticeable than the first. I know it can happen to anyone but I feel like I have bad luck! I want to get one on my bicep but I know a lot of blowouts happen there so I'm really afraid, haha Maybe I'll work up to it with one specific artist so they can be more familiar with me?
@@Mindofliz it's more dependant on the style you get and the placement. If you get fine line it's more likely to be noticiable over something that gets more skin coverage. Also if you get the tattoo with an area that regularly stretches it's more likely to get complications (or make you move when you get it if it's a painful spot like the ribs) Best thing to do is speak to a few artists in your area before you make a final decision 👍
@@Mindofliz Ahhh yea me personally I feel if you go to a tattoo artist and they are rude, mean, or negative I would NOT allow them to input ink into my skin as tattoos involve energy and a lot of spiritual things we can choose to believe in or not, to each their own. So for me thats a bad sign, I remember getting a couple of my first tattoos and they are not even memories anymore. I literally don't remember much about my tattoos I got at 18 in a professional shop but some how I remember getting a tattoo on my stomach at 14 with a guitar string and a homemade tattoo machine. I remember using that very homemade tattoo machine to attempt to tattoo myself but that did not go well haha. In terms of being afraid of blowouts, I would be too. I feel it is more about looking at someones work, talking with them and trying to get in the same frequencies so you 2 are on the same page. Find a tattooist you can go to and feel super confident each and every tattoo you get, and they are out there, we may just have to do the footwork.
I don’t understand. If the standard dermis layer on a real person is 2mm deep than using a 1.2mm practice skin would be the opposite of helpful as you would have to drive the needles all the way through the practice skin to achieve optimal depth. I would assume using a 3.0mm thick practice skin would be optimal as you would then have enough material to drive the needles to the optimal depth without puncturing through the entire practice skin. Additionally with the 3mm thickness it would be obvious when you had a blow out as the ink would be visible on the underside of the practice skin as a result of the ink being deposited to the 3mm depth! Your input and advise would be appreciated. Thank you.
I absolutely love how were all tattooing are own selfs now'a'days. Cuz they charging up the ass out here in Cali. Haven't gone in years and both my legs are sleeved up, done my neck, my arms, my stomach etc. I'm a very patient person(also ambidextrous) tho so I don't condone doing more then your thigh if your not good with control of your hands.
That is a good question! I think it would depend on the practice skin you are using. Reason I say this is because some practice skins are of a rubber felt, some are of a silicone felt, etc. I have used the rubber felts and those fake skins feel like they have deep cuts when I tattoo with any configuration at any depth. I have silicone felts and those do not cut open like the rubber felts. So it would depend on the specific felts you are using. Would you be able to confirm which fake skin felt you're using?
@@lankowlllyk If you run a slow clean line you essentially are cutting the skin at its surface. You can cut the skin and rub ink in and get a line also, but the goal of a gun and needle is to perforate in a way that connects the line at the surface. Some skin has a tendency to want to just shear instead of accept the multiple pokes. If the client has nice skin I would say the cutting is proof you are damaging the skin to some degree. Its very tricky to learn. I still don't know for sure what I'm doing but want to reinvest in these skins to practice between tattoos and keep muscle memory built up.
@@ryansizemore5064 thanks man that makes sense. I think the solid lines I pull at the right depth only have a slight texture difference and the ones that feel cut are due to hand speed/voltage mismatch or going too deep
Good video! Maybe make a video showing angle of machine while tattooing lines, shading and packing? My Mentor let me practice my linework and all on him and myself. A few bloodline tattoos and I was ready for the first tattoo with actual ink. It was only black...lined and packed. That was 1977...Damn time does fly!

@@DanielYuck Started out with a Puma. From Spaulding in New York. Now I have about 75 machines Next Gen about 3. A few From a girl from China. I bought 3 machines from her for an excellent price. Excellent machines for $30 bucks apiece. Very quality machines. If you’re familiar with Kylin machines you’ll know what I mean! I’ve also got a Couple Soba machines. Iron horse and workhorse irons. Got a machine made for me from a guy in the UK. The rear coil is adjustable for a perfect hitter. It’s called the black lotus machine. Got a few made for me by Johnny Gault Also got a few infinite irons. Plus. mORE. Just can’t remember all the machines I have lol. Too many. Actually not enough. Lol

Yea prior to me tattooing I assumed the same. Tattoos hurt so bad, lol I love getting them but I also hate getting them. I go in with the mentality it is a small investment of time and pain to express myself further. I also use numbing gel because why not. lol I tip my hat to everyone whom goes in with no numbing gel and wants to feel that experience. It hurts me personally too much for that. I will use numbing gel anytime I get a tattoo proudly. haha
@@DanielYuck None of my artists will let me use numbing gel! I think my 24/7 anxiety contributes to it too, because my adrenaline is all used up by the time I'm in the chair, so no pain relief from that 🤣. CBD has been helping a lot though. Thanks for your reply, have a good day!
@@minicat3640 haha that’s so odd that they wouldn’t allow you to apply a numbing cream or gel. I can see in theory a few reasons why but I would prioritize my clients well being and comfort. I think it really all depends on the tattooist and their specific approach. I never thought of CBD but I should look more into this. I can see it being good for those whom get super nervous and over think the tattoo and use up their vital energy on the car ride over haha. That in theory maybe a good recommendation to help calm the nervous and ease the mind a bit. I always remember sure tattoos hurt, I would be more scared about my tattoo artist and the artist not properly applying the tattoo or worse have infected gear etc. I feel these are practical things to look out for and be afraid of. Pain is pain and it comes in many forms but again that’s my view on it haha everyone is different. Some can be like yea no a tattoo is scary plain and simple 😆
I know how to line but damn.. just had one I forgot ointment on.. lines were ghosty.. just got a coil.. did two tattoos before his with this new machine.. worked great... think ointment is to blame for light lines? I mean dude I struggled and sweated just to make one solid line.. lmk
Oh damn. So if I’m understanding correctly you stated that you did a tattoo with no ointment prior to putting the needle to the skin? If I’m understanding that correctly yea we’d want to make sure that the part of the body that we are going to be tattooing has to have a small amount of something to moisten the skin over going in dry. I feel if we are just pulling lines without moistening the skin prior this would cause even more discomfort and pain for the client. Always use something to moisten the skin prior to pulling lines. If the lines are not dark and saturated there could be many variables to consider. From not going too deep, moving too fast etc. What machine do you use ?

I started of just recently, I’ve been practicing blending I’m on my 5th day but it feel natural to me. Skin feels like normal in a few hours. Burns like normal.
Hiya. Great video. I've just started out practicing on fake skin. I read a lot of comments that line work should be around 7-8v with a wand. I personally feel better with a much slower 3-4v. What are the issues with using lower voltage, my lines are evenly saturated with no blow outs after a few months of practice

Is the sound when he starts a new line the sound of him hitting the skin too hard at first or the sound of the machine hitting the skin for the first time?
I’m not sure I fully understand the question in it’s entirety but I will try to explain. The sound we hear is a combination of different things. A lot of the sound is coming from the table that I am tattooing on. It carries the sound of the machine through out the table so it makes it sound louder a bit and I’m using a thin & tough fake skin that requires a certain depth to saturate. I feel it maybe a combination of different elements we are hearing.

Thank you for your support! That’s a great question. So when I’m tattooing on fake silicone skin I use simple Vaseline to remove any excess ink. Now how the ink comes off is determined by the material of the fake skin you’re using. @@Ebeanslol I don’t fully agree with that. From my experience using multiple skins and different types of skin, on ALL of them, Vaseline has been the best way to remove excess ink, smudges, etc. I can’t even recall if I’ve ever actually used any alcohol to clean off smudges from a practice skin. Furthermore cleaning with alcohol I don’t recommend as you will be inhaling those vapors the entire tattoo session which I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable with, where we have Vaseline with no odor and does the job in what I would describe as better over alcohol. That’s just from my personal experience.
A friend of mine is from prison and tattooing for 23 years is trying to figure out what he's doing wrong, some tattoo ink will take and then sometimes it doesn't. He wants to know why
That’s a good question! I think it all depends and on multiple variables! Would you happen to know what machine he is using? Is he using cartridge needles or barred needles? Typically if the ink isn’t staying it’s because we aren’t getting the ink into the correct layer of the skin, and each part of the body will require different depths and on each person the depth will always vary. So there’s many things that can be simultaneously going wrong upon his work flow. I would have to see an image or 2 and I sound possibly be able to shed some more insight as to what maybe going on.
Ahh that’s the thing about tattooing, it truly is a world of its own. I don’t think anyone will ever do anything exactly the same. As we advance and develop ourselves we tend to all find our own grooves and ways of doing things. Me personally I prefer thin practice skins because I didn’t want to be prone to blowouts even tho all of us are. My logic was if I learn on thinner fake skin I will know where not to go haha but this is 110% subjective and we may not all feel the same about that.
Can you do a video about wraps and grip? ( grip I think you covered already) wrapping a machine is personal preference, but, there's a lot of techniques with different wraps. Fat wraps for lining, smaller ones for shading and flicking, medium for color packing, etc. Love your videos! You keep it straight to the point.
