Amazing breakdown. Appreciate your trip and route details. Looks like such a great way to enjoy retirement. You've changed my mind on an RV retirement plan. This is a fantastic option for traveling the world at 1/3 of the cost of an RV!!! Thanks for sharing Brian and Carrie. Cheers!

I'd dare to guesstimate that Seattle area perhaps bare minimum $60-80K per year. $80K would mean $110 per person per day. Travel is definitely cheaper, not to mention the fun, the experience, and the beers, too

We’re now in our 4th year of full-time travel. And are also slow travelers. We no longer own any real estate but our “home”, e.g. our storage shed and doctors are in Gig Harbor, WA. We find we need at least 6 weeks there annually to deal with medical issues, new glasses, etc. And we cruise rather than fly whenever possible. I enjoy your videos and comparing/contrasting with our experiences. We spend a fair amount more than you do (around $100K a year) but we also are likely to have fewer years on the planet than you two. Live Your Life. Live Your Life!

I just stumbled on your channel, and I am so glad I did! I am an avid traveler (only 25 countries), and will be retiring in the next few years and plan on spending about half the year traveling solo until I can't any longer. I love the breakdown of costs, along with the context and your commentaries. Most of your locations I've either been to or on my list, so it's great watching your adventures! Regarding the luggage issue- it happens. You have to roll with it, and accept it as part of the "adventure". @@BrianandCarrie you are so great at doing this, thanks for all your hard work. I just sold my hotel, owner for 38 years. it kept me busy, 24/7/365 , I went for months without without a single day off, years without a vacation, I was heavly leveraged. It was very difficult to make ends meet, unfortanlly, I was always well qualifed for bankrupcy but too stubborn to quit or give up, like a hoteler we all know named donald trump that went bankrupt many times and defaulted on paying many debts,, a man without integurity. For 38 years I enjoyed the guests from all over the world that paid to come and visit me, lol. I did not feel the need for travel since I had traveled extensivally as an aviator for 13 years before buying the hotel. So, I was lucky to be paid well and the airlines paid for most of the travel expenses. And on the wild side I was invlolved in most of the US conflicts and wars for 13 years. My travel mileage was equal to about 200 times around the world, more than most astronauts. Now I am 85 years old and findally retired. Now, I am bored and want to travel again,,, but realize that I will hafto pay, todays prices, wow! sticker shock.

This is amazingly helpful. You covered so much gorund in 2023, including your first exciting trips into southeast Asia. Had you remained there, or nearby and avoided central Europe with Italy, Austria and Germany in peak season, your costs would have been substantially lower. But having said that - just wow! Having watched all your videos and how you travel, this is NOT hostel budget with a backpack. You are staying at very nice places and seeing the bucket list sights. Your overall costs show me, yet again, that this is manageable and achievable. Kudos to you both for all time and work put in to compile all of this data. Your costs are spot on with mine. I'm a 63 year old solo traveler, who's travels have been close to identical with yours. In the last two years, I have spent 8 months in Medellin, Colombia, 8 months in Mexico, 5 months in Europe, starting in Amsterdam and ending in Istanbul, a month in Morocco, a month in Thailand, and I have now settled in Da Nang for six months. My favorite cities in that time are Istanbul, Prague, Chiang Mai, Mexico City, and Medellin. And I couldn't agree more about Penang. I was there in the coolest part of the year, and I though I would melt into the pavement. I've been traveling for eight years now. What a wonderful life! Great job, guys! I'm also one for recording daily travel expenses. It helps me in planning future trips and I also look back at what I spent on previous trips. I take along my travel journal and write all expenses down at the end of each day. I itemize each expense. Wow, to take 40 hours to get from Singapore to Seattle. 😱 I've always taken Singapore Air from L.A.-Singapore via Narita (SQ11) 12 hours to Narita, one hour in Narita airport long enough to grab and eat some sushi, back on the same flight number and on to Singapore for +/- 7hrs 45 mins. And on the way home, it's shorter (SQ12). When getting to the Narita to LAX portion, it usually takes only 10 hours, but sometimes less. Greetings from Los Angeles

This is a great video, inspiring! I can’t come even close to those numbers when budgeting so that is why we are hesitant to embark in this full time travel journey. As an example, accommodations. I calculated an average of 70 dollars per day (120 or more for top locations, 40 for cheap ones like Vietnam), that is 25k in lodging alone. Same with food, flights, etc. I can’t seem to make it cheaper than 60k per year being conservative! You made it with just half so my sincere congratulations, kudos guys! Spending 5 months in SE Asia and another 2+ in Turkey can really help on the budget. The food in each of those locations is also very inexpensive. We also eat at home a lot when outside of SE Asia. Great video, thank you for your time to put it all together. Question I have is about health insurance, the elephant in the room for many travelers who do not have it with their job. The way you mentioned it in this video sounded as if it were something not that important, yet I know many people who struggle because of health insurance & associated costs. The price tag you listed (about 3,000 per year for a couple) sounds very low to me, so was wondering if you could give details, maybe make a video, regarding what is covered, whether US coverage is included, if dental is included, etc. Like you, I can budget pretty much everything (flights, hotels, food) but health care costs are not so predictable, and many go broke or have ot go back to work because of those.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 8 месяцев назад
Hi, Peter. Great question. Our medical will cover us for any major medical around the world including the US which we pay extra for. It does not include dental. We each had a broken tooth and a cleaning in Portugal and paid $135 each, less than your deductible! So, we just pay out of pocket. Carry Is getting some work done in Turkey for a fraction of the cost. We will be doing a video on this when the work is completed in March. Thanks again for the question and for watching our channel! Cheers!!🍻

Thank you, I eagerly checked the website for the Nomad insurance. While the price of the premiums did indeed look good, it does not seem to cover things like cancer (many cancers out there...) and the maximum benefit is at about 250,000. It also limits US visits to 15 days per term, if I remember correctly. So I personally see this more as a supplementary insurance, or a temporary solution. Wishing you lots of pleasant days on your camino!

Hi, sorry let me clarify. The insurance I have is the one you looked into. I choose that insurance, as I still have a insurance option while in the states. The insurance Brian has sounds like what you're needing. That is through Cigna Global, and we add on US coverage. You can do a free quote on their website which can vary by age and where your main travels will be. Hope that helps.

She actually just quit and while I can still take my job (at college) we are contemplating options to get out of here in some capacity, either full move internationally of partial travelling - I am a bit more worried about selling our home (small place) and just travel with bags like you guys do (ever wondered if you may get tired of the travelling mode... Well, for some reason I do, and I also know that even 3-4 wonderful years in various countries can be wonderful but go quickly and then I where to go if just want to be "home"....). Anyway, that is why your videos got my attention I think, and I do hope t watch a lot more of them when time and energy allows. (Teaching sucks it all out of you :)

I went around the world for almost a year and flew back to the states in the middle as well for 30 days. As a single traveler and a backpacker I spent around $30,000 that included my airfare. I was in Japan for 2 months and spent $5,500 which I thought was pretty good and that included my airfare to get there. Staying several nights in hostels and pensions saves for the extra things you want to do.

That sounds to me cheaper than staying at home for two people (after converting to pounds),so this should be quite doable for most people. Key seems to be finding less expensive places to travel to (accommodation is normally the biggest cost). One suggestion I have is to travel out of season I.e. when providers will otherwise find it difficult to fill spaces. Many countries in Southern Europe such as Spain still have pretty decent weather in the winter months. Recently I recall sitting outside in Gandia in the evening with just a t-shirt

That was something great to work on and I worked out roughly what it'd cost us in Australian Dollars to do the same as you for 2 people. Because the Aussie Dollar is only about 65 cents US, I worked it out at your cost plus 40% and it was around AUD$47,500. Now considering any overseas airfare is going to cost us double for what you paid because Australia is so far away from anywhere else. My wife is Japanese living in Australia so we are considering to relocate to Japan for a Couple of years and travel from Narita airport which is only 40 Minutes from My wife's family home and is where the budget international flights now leave from and because the yen is almost Parity to the AUD, it'll be easier to calculate. and it'll be cheaper to fly from Japan to other world Countries. Thankyou for this video 🙂

Just started watching you, came across your videos by accident. I'm sure people who follow you already know the answer, but how do you support yourselves? Do you have remote jobs, etc.? Also, do you ever get tired of traveling as cheaply as possible? A lot of your travel sounds downright uncomfortable. 40 hours of flight time? I'm assuming that's in basic economy. I had a hard time on an 8 hour transatlantic flight a year and a half ago. More power to you! I imagine it's also about personal priorities. If your number 1 priority is to see as much of the world as possible, then the trade-off is likely going to be traveling as cheaply as possible. I do like your suggestions about housesitting and/or longish rentals to stay longer in a place. Thanks for all your helpful info!

Hi! Love you guys! Thank you for all the great information. We are wanting to expand our 2 week/ one destination trips to a month. I was happy to hear you got a refund with the mold situation. I am very sensitive to chemicals/ smells, etc. so this is one of my concerns. I remember you did not like Palermo so I am guessing when you left early you had to loose the money? What if you don't feel safe? That is so subjective. One night in Madrid ( we were only there one night) we had a screaming lunatic in the apartment next door at 2 am. I guess my concern is booking an entire month and having some kind of major problem. Would love for you to address any of this here or in a video. Much appreciation, Linda
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 6 месяцев назад
Great question and very valid concerns. Unfortunately the only situations you will really have possible recourse would be where the owner was at fault. So neighbors and safety would be leaving at a loss. But, if a listing gives false information, this is absolutely something you could address with Airbnb. It's always a risk. We left Palermo early for a few reasons, but we loved our Airbnb, so that wasnt one of them.

I enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you. When I retired ten years ago at age 58, I thought about doing some monthly rentals at various places along the US Gulf Coast. But life happens. In 2017 our daughter and her family moved to central PA from CO. We would do month long trips twice a year to be with them, and we ended up buying a second house there a couple of years ago - and our son bought a house there, too. We will be selling our CO home this Spring and moving to PA full time. We enjoy traveling the world on cruise ships - generally Princess, but as I’m knocking on 70 years old, full time international travel has passed us by. We’ve visited many of the places you traveled to in 2023 during the past several years - but I can honestly say I always enjoy getting back to our ship’s cabin, having a white tablecloth dinner, and seeing a fantastic show. It does come with a higher cost - but how else can you see the world if the wife is scared to fly?

Don't apologize for the prices you are paying for hotels/AirBnb's. They are what they are. Prices all seemed normal. Its the experience that counts and you are correct - staying more central costs more, but then you save on other things like Metro, buses, etc. You can go extra cheap to extravagant everywhere you go - you've elected to pay a certain amount and that is fine.

Our month-long Airbnb was a disaster! We had to find a new place that had availability for a month-long last minute. We found one in Kuala Lumpur so had to leave.

Great job as always guys. We fly to eastern/central Europe each summer from Texas. I would love to find out how you fly from Seattle to Krakow for $768. Thanks

How are you guys able to afford one year travel around the world? Are you guys retire? What was your job professions before you retired?

Before traveling we worked for 30+ years. Brian in the beer and wine business and Carrie for the city that we are from. We supplement our savings by generating income on RU-vid. We actually put a lot of work into this. Cheers!🍻

Costs are highly variable.. I just watched John and Bev's (Retirement Travelers) cost video and their budget was close to $90,000/yr 😮. Your numbers are actually fantastic for all the places you guys went, I'm thinking $30k for a solo perhaps should be a good ballpark.

Yes, $30k for a solo traveler would be very comfortable. Thanks so much for watching ☺

John and Bev's numbers were shocking to me as well, but they're a very different type of traveler. They move fast because they want to see a lot due to her MS diagnosis, figuring they might have to slow down if she develops many symptoms. They call themselves old in a joking way, but they're super active - and have such wonderful attitudes!

That figure sounds very reasonable to me. We spent $41,000.00 last year just staying at home, seeing nothing!

Did you buy your Turkish Airlines ticket with a premium travel credit card? If so, you probably have travel protection for the luggage delay. You wouldn’t need to deal with the airlines and just file a claim with the credit card insurance. You would get back your cab ride, the clothes, etc. Sorry that happened to you.
