How Much Math Do You Need to Know in Cybersecurity?

A common question asked around cybersecurity community is how much math is required for a career in this field. Often times this question is asked for students who are enrolling in formal college degree curriculums, having to complete basic math classes before entering the cybersecurity specific classes. Today I address this question head-on, outlining the classes you will likely see in a college degree maps.
If you are not pursuing a formal degree, you will still be able to understand the different security positions and the "math" demands each one requires (as outlined in the video).

You can but most likely would be in the entry level position, so if you in trade school I recommend switching to your bachelors degree.

What kind of math would a SOC Analyst need? I failed math in high school twice 😅 I love everything about Cyber Security but that’s going to be my biggest hurdle..

College Degree sucks! Negligible Math Required if a Cyber Security Student-Personnel wants to use just existing Tools-Softwares. If one wants to be good in Scripting(Developing-Modifying) then a good amount of Maths is required manipulating SQL Queries.

Good to have a goal to shoot for when I take the Accuplacer test! I'm going for an associate's in computer science or IT (don't quite know which yet) and I haven't taken a math class since Algebra II in high school. And it's nice to have a student talking about this kind of thing instead of a professional with 20+ years work experience in the field. Professionals are great and all but it's great to hear this stuff from someone who's knee-deep in homework like I'm going to be next semester.

I started in cs. Realized quickly that calculus was hard af.. then I heard horror about discrete math for some that calf was easy for. I was always great with math and logic more so than other subjects but calc was the death of me. So here I am.

Im half way through to getting my BS in Cybersecurity and so far I have had to take precalculus and coming up is discreet math. Precalc would have been hard but I practiced everyday but I have no idea what discreet math will be like. I scored an A in precalc but I hate math and feel I got lucky and do not think that I want to get into cryptography anyway.

@@nahidsarker69 Yes and one of the differences is Calculus you have to memorize a lot more complex formulas whereas precalc is more basic but still difficult and easy to make mistakes. This is an old post of mine so Ill update. Just graduated with a 4.0 and will start masters in November.

I posted on Reddit the other day about getting a job in the cyber security field. I graduate this spring from an MIS program with a concentration in cyber security. And have the security + this guy comments about how if I wanted to work in cyber security then I need a a degree in it. And I'm like most schools don't even offer that. In my area schools only offer graduate degrees in cyber security. I know that you are doing a four year. I did at first want to major in accounting but then changed my mind.
