Thank you for supporting your local farmers. We really appreciate it! My hubby is a cattle farmer and he’s extremely passionate about it. There’s nothing like homegrown quality!
Thank you for supporting your local farmers! I grew up on a farm in South Dakota with milk cows and then married a cattle rancher there. I can tell you personally how much they appreciate any support they can get. Also, buying locally generally means getting higher-quality meat than what you'd find in a grocer store. Great video!! ❤❤
I,have a small uprite freezer ,when we bought a half a cow from friends it was all I could do to get it closed! Every time I opened it whatever fell on my foot was what we had for dinner!
So many comments on this video just can relate so much to this. For organization of 1/2 cow also aways put new things on bottomn, but always put old things in a box/s on top so i make sure they are used first and i know exactly what is old. But if you dont have room for a box i will mark them with some kind of VERY visible that makes them very distinctly different. Like BIG red marker X on "older" meat to use first. Nice that yours have different colores lables from different cows. Mine are from same butcher each time and look identical. And im sure like many i start making meals that use up the "older" meat.
We use plastic putty knives to get our ice off when it builds up. (Get them at any hardware store near paint supplies.) The medal ones can be too sharp and damage your freezee.
We buy a half of a beef every year from our brother in law…we divide it up between us and our three grown kids and their families…it is part of their christmas…we’ve done that for several years
We do the same, we get a side of beef and it’s Christmas for our grown kids, we do a pig as well…they love it and so thankful for it! It makes us feel good as it’s from a local farmer we know and it helps our kids!
@@deeleesee46 I just saw something about this on Facebook. A lady said her dad buys her & her large family a half beef & a half pig every single year for Christmas. She said he’d rather know she and her family have food all year instead of random things under the tree they may or may not use. She said it has blessed their family so much because it eliminates a huge expense from their grocery bill all year long. I’m definitely tucking that away for when my kids are older with families of their own. It’s such a great idea!
Our son, Gunnar, raises the cows that we have. He has a small homestead & only raises 3-4 at a time, in addition to his Highlanders, which he just has for fun. You can’t beat the quality & knowledge of how they were raised etc.
Beef short ribs are good to make shredded beef for tacos. Have you ever tried beef heart? You trim off the fat and slice it flour and brown in the pan. Let it simmer in beef gravy for a few hours. It’s very yummy and tender. You would not know it heart. We use a rubber mallet to break the ice on the inside of the freezer. Just hit it a few times and it falls apart. I put the similar cuts into either paper sacks or hard sided reusable grocery bags. Makes it easier to organize and find things.
Yes, English cut roast is an arm roast without bone. Thanks for educating people on the processing process! the cutting list can be very confusing to those who've never experienced purchasing this way. Very helpful to those of us in the butchershop!
My grandma used to make us ranger cookies all the time. She always used rice crispies and they were delicious! Seeing you make them brings back great memories ❤
Very educational. I would suggest first time buyers find a beef chart on the Internet on cuts and difference between front quarter and back quarter if they want less meat
They do still sell puff rice cereal my dad eats it almost everyday. He loves it with a banana in it or blueberries. I like it from time to time. I am going to try that cookie recipe.
Thank you! I'm planning on getting a deep freeze this year on the Black Friday sales and want to buy.Half a beef for the first time so this is very useful..
Thank you Jennifer. Loved the video! Very informative. I wondered how much meat that would be! You put out such nice videos, thank you for all the hard work.
I had soo much fun watching this video and learned alot. Thank you for all u do on inspiring us to try new things. You are appreciated!!! Have a Blessed week!
Wow lots of Great Meat.👍🏻👍🏻 Many years ago I used to Work at a Cow🐃 slaughter House.,Blessings and have a Wonderful Week Jennifer and Beautiful Family.🙏❤🌻🌷
OMG the tongue is literally the very best taco I have ever had in my life!!! Slow cook it and peel off the outer layer and shred.. it will legit change your whole life ❤❤❤
We ALWAYS get the cow heart 🤎. It is my kids' FAVORITE part of the cow we get, no joke. We cook it just like a beef roast in a Crock pot. My daughter is always sad we only get 1 heart per cow. And my husband makes beef liver stroganoff. It's the only way I like beef liver, and my kids like it also.
Ahhh puffed rice!! I have a bag of it in my cabinet right now. Anytime I want to enjoy a breakfast that makes me remember my mom that's where I turn. That was her go to as a diabetic..for many years. I think I'll go have a bowl now.. Our local Acme is the only store I can find that still carries it. Hmmm it's hard to imagine in a cookie tho!
The only way we eat puffed rice is to make puffed rice balls/squares. You make them them same way as rice crispy treats except you substitute the rice crispies for puffed rice.
That was interesting. We buy half a beef once a year from the farmer. Between the farmer & the butcher it was about $16 hundred dollars. Lasts us all year. I move the last years to the top basket of the freezer to use up first. 😊
You guys should try Calton in a slow cooker. It is so good and you can use the broth of the tongue you gave believes in one onion in. It is so good that me and my mom did counter.
jenn always ask for the cow feet and cow tounge and the cow cheeks and lips and the beef tripe because the processor will throw them in the trash those are great for tacos and beef tripe is used for menudo which is yummy
I wonder if you could get sone of the bones to make bone broth? We always had plenty of venison as well… sure miss having a freezer full of good high quality meat and seafood that we sourced ourselves. The good ole days 😊 y’all have a beautiful life, you really do.
Hi Jen thanks for sharing this video. We are definitely thinking of buying bulk meat from the farmer we only have a very small freezer right now so we would have to get snother one for sure. God bless
My brother in law was a scout master and he told me the recipe they use that you can use whatever cereal you want just so it’s the same amount. So you can use what you have.
I never have, but I was thinking about it this year and then it totally slipped my mind. I'll have to do some research before next year so I know what to do and how to use it.
My Mom used to buy puffed rice & puffed wheat cereal when she was on Weight Watchers! You could get a big serving for little calories, but it was like eating air!! 😆
Really helpful video! I had pictured half a beef being less than what you showed, so now I feel it's really worthwhile to get one. Question #1: Do you have a heated garage, or does it get hot in the summer and cold in the winter? If so, how does the freezer cope with the external temperature changess? Question #2: Do you have a generator, or does the freezer hold its temperature when the power goes out? Thanks for the info--I'm definitely planning on getting a freezer, so any input helps! 🙂
It depends on the type of steer as to how much you get, some grow bigger than others. For us our side ends up being about 200lbs a side and that is the boneless option.
For me: short ribs will be turned into broth (not enough meat for us); the only time I've gotten a sizeable amount of bones is when my uncle started butchering and finally understood what I'm asking for (quarts and quarts of broth vs 1 pot of soup); when we had dogs I had them grind up the organ meats so I could use it in homemade dog food; brisket is turned into hamburger. I have had and made brisket many different ways and I just cannot get over the texture and fat. I'd rather have burger over it. I've not gotten fat to render yet, but have been offered it. ❤
I have that pan from your tater tot casserole, it was my mother n laws. Does your have a slide on metal lid to it? Mine does and I love, I gained possession in 93 when she passed and it's still going stron and don't even have to grease for a sheet cake❤
My husband n I just picked up our very first 1/2 a cow we went through a butchering company we ordered in June my parents would go through a friend but we moved out to of state or we would have used them
I just made rib eyes that have been in our freezer for a LONG TIME! They were wrapped good and had no freezer burn. Some people may be particular about dates on food, but for me if they smell good, look good and taste good it’s no big deal.
Can you Please make a video showing how to make beef short ribs. I NEVER know how to use them, so I just have ours made in to browned beef with our 1/2 cow.
My daughter and I put in an order for a half of cow which we should get in another month. Our butcher buys his cows locally, cuts and packs for us. When we order we go off a list saying what we want and make a $200 deposit. Been doing this since covid. Never had vacuum sealed meat. Curious what others pay. The price this time is $4.19 lb.
Does the meat smell and taste the same as buying it at a store? I had bought some meat from a dairy farm yrs ago and when I made the beef ribs it stunk my house up so bad nobody would touch them. So I never bought meat there again and stuck with the grocery stores. Thank you in advance. 😊
We have a new Costco open by our house and we bought a lot of meat for our freezer and 4 days later our freezer went out. We had no idea. I haven’t recovered yet. It’s sickening to lose so much meat.😢😢
We used to get our beef from my dad. Now we buy from our son in law. Our son in law has to get a down payment because people would get their meat and not pay him. His customers are relatives, friends, acquaintances and referrals. Can you imagine doing that to a farmer? Atrocious.
Not everybody can afford to do this if you haven't noticed some people are struggling because of grocery prices being so high.especially me raising my grandchildren and trying to buy groceries is tough and all by myself.
Kathy, you’re completely right that grocery prices are high and buying in bulk all at once won’t work for everyone. We volunteer at our local food pantry and I strongly urge you to find one nearby and take advantage of it. Ours only requires a local address to receive a share of food. There’s no income requirement and you can receive food every 30 days. The recipients get meat, pizzas, canned goods, pasta, snacks, eggs, frozen fruit cups, bakery items, fresh produce and a couple of hygiene items. It’s there for anyone needing a boost and I can tell you that it brings joy to the volunteers to be able to help provide food for families.
