Bio & Discography
Chris Wallin Bio
With his unique gift for finding the extraordinary in ordinary life, Chris Wallin has established himself as one of Nashville's most sought-after songwriters.
For the past several years, Wallin has topped the charts with classics-in-the-making for the industry's biggest stars: “Love Me If You Can” by Toby Keith, "Don't Blink" by Kenny Chesney, “I’m Tryin’” by Trace Adkins, “Something To Be Proud Of” and “Speed” by Montgomery Gentry and "People Loving People" by Garth Brooks .
Raised in the small town in East Tennessee Wallin was influenced by the likes of Jim Croce, James Taylor and Merle Haggard, as well as his own musical family - especially his mother, a singer herself. She recorded and performed in Nashville when Chris was only 7 years old, and the experience made an indelible impression on Chris.
He began writing songs at age 12 and, perhaps inevitably, moved to Music City several years later, making the dues-paying rounds of writers nights and songwriting contests. He caught a break when his songs caught the ear of a small publishing company called King Lizard Music.
Since then Wallin has worked hard to achieve his place on the “A List” of Nashville songwriters, and doesn't take his status for granted: Chris says “Back then I used to buy 50 or so McDonald's 29 cent hamburgers a week and freeze them solid. I could eat all week on $15 … They weren’t bad, except the last few get a little crusty from freezer burn.”
Artists who have cut Chris’s songs include Lorrie Morgan, Garth Brooks, Aaron Lewis, Montgomery Gentry, Sammy Kershaw, Trace Adkins, Anthony Smith, Jeffrey Steele, Confederate Railroad, Neal McCoy, Brian Mccomas, Brad Paisley, Joe Diffie, Diamond Rio, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith and many more.

This is great! I’ve gotten a little glimpse into this from another artist, but this is very in depth. Maybe you answer this in part 2, do you find new songwriters are having to give up more, including some writing credit, to the recording artist to get them to cut their song? Also - I have always hit dead-ends when it comes to where and how to pitch my songs. Thanks so much for all of this, I’ll listen to the next one.

Thank you for sharing this and for spending your time doing this: do radio stations still pay 10 cents a play for performance royalties? Of course this would be the total publishers share, the publisher and the songwriters.

Hey Chris, I’ve got 2 number 1’s written right now I’m sure of it. My question is, how do I get them to Nashville without having to split my song 10 different ways, your song something to be proud of only had you and the publisher so as I understand you got 100% of the songwriters cut, how did you do that if you don’t mind me asking?

Where's part 2?? You left me hanging on the edge of my seat!!! 😂. Also, as a note for anyone interested. If this money had been immediately invested the first years income on his songs into dividend paying ETFs. Something like RYLD, that pays 12% annually. He would be getting paid roughly $6500/ month in dividends for life, without touching principle. Plus, he would keep getting royalties for his songs going forward. If he re-invested those, that income would only keep increasing, even without another #1.

Check this out, I don`t know the details about how much this guy contributed to the song. His tattoo guy was sharing this with me he said it could have been a verse a riff or just about anything. Anyway after a few days they call him in and tell him the record is doing well and they wanted to show their appreciation by handing him a check for ten-thousand dollars and had he been there alone he woulda tore the guy`s arm off but he brought a friend along and he is a roadie and he advised the cat to check with a lawyer that specializes in music contracts. So he did and the lawyer asked him how long he had to decide? The cat said one year and the lawyer said I would wait because you never know what may transpire. HE ended up with 1.2 million dollars so as you can see the music industry uses some type of gorilla math much like medical, oil, 30 cookies..six dollaes plus

Good chunk of money but goes quickly when the tax man takes his share. hahaha it goes to show you have to keep writing and getting them recorded to make a good living. Thanks for sharing this info, it opens ours eyes to the life of a writer.

Something else I’m going to eventually cover is catalog sales. I sold my catalog back in the day . It’s interesting how all that works and how you make more money that your song has made by sell a portion of your recurring revenue.

When you say songwriter and he wrote the song are you talking the entire song music and all or just the lyrics and melody progression

more than likely the lyrics are the main part along with a unique melody
