How much Power Output is a Cap Pack Capable of?

A capacitor is not capable of supplying a significant amount of power for much time at all. However, they are capable of supplying quite a bit of power for a very short period of time. It is within this capability that capacitors play an important role within our ESC's. In this video we also review ripple voltage and the purpose of a capacitor bank installed in conjunction with the ESC.

This is with no doubt the best electric power system channel on the RU-vid, congrats. As a Mechanical Engineer I really appreciate learning the fundamentals and theory behind the hobby. I'll be installing CC 12V 880uf cap packs on my 60cc electric setups to reduce the load on the ESC as I fly 3D/XA and usually get very hard on the throttle stick.

Hey Ronaldo, thank you for the awesome comment. It certainly means a lot to me and keeps me motivated to make more videos! If your ESC is able to datalog the ripple current, you will be able to see where your system is at.

I actually built a 1.2F cap bank... Because I can 😛 You're spot on with the explanation. Cap bank is basically there for line filtering so your ESC is happy. One other thing I want to mention is most of the cap banks are subpar quality. They typically use average quality general purpose caps without high ripple current ratings like you'd get in say quality automotive grade caps.

the problem ive found with larger cap packs is they arc when you connect them to the battery. this can damage the connector over time. im going to try the arc eliminator xt90 connectors to see if that fixes the problem. it does keep the esc nice and cool though. also, killmode rc makes some nice audio grade cap packs if you dont feel like making them.

Hey Isogen, thanks for the comment and input! A 1.2F cap is quite large. Is this for car audio by chance?

Hey MadScientist, plugging in abattery pack to the ESC usually results in a spark. This is most evident starting at 4s and the spark gets louder and hotter as voltage/cell count increases. You are spot on with more capacitance leading to a larger spark. When you use the anti spark connectors, this problem will go away.

How do I determine what size caps I need for my 2s 8.4 drag set up. 880uF 35 volts. Without tearing one apart I'd love to know

I have a dbxl-e 2.0. I'll be installing an r-snake flier 400a esc paired with a leopard 58113 870kv motor running on 8s. While I don't drag race, I do use full throttle up to 10-15 seconds or a little longer at a time. Would you recommend me using a cap pack? This is a 1/5 scale buggy. My main concern is just to help protect the esc. The batteries I use now are 100c and they tend to drop voltage on full throttle, but I am planning on getting higher c rated batteries 120c+ even if the mah is a little lower. Edit: I know the system will be drawing over 300 amps on full throttle.

Excellent video as usual. Question, would it be better to have a bank of smaller caps, or a single larger one? I like to solder on a single 3300uF 35V cap to my ESC battery leads, would getting a bank of smaller caps be more beneficial? Thanks!
@RCexplained
@RCexplained 4 года назад
Hi Spacecadet, thank you for your comment! A larger single capacitor can work, however smaller capacitors placed in parallel has a couple added benefits. Mechanically, smaller capacitors are able to dissipate heat to the air more effectively by using a larger amount of surface area. The second benefit is that smaller capacitors in parallel will reduce the total amount of inductance vs a single larger capacitor. Both of these points add to the reliability of the system.

Apart from voltage and capacitance what spec should i check for each capacitor? I don't want to end up buying the wrong one...are some kind of technology preferrable or i can go for the 101 cap i see on ebay?

Something else do you think it is best to use more smaller capacitors in micro farads but in total the same amount of Mf. For example one capacitor of 4000mf or four capacitors of 1000mf each?

I don't know enough about super capacitors to comment. Off the top of my head, I would not expect them to provide much more of an advantage vs capacitors.

Kindly so how can I calculate how much micro farads I should use, for example I use 6s battery so I used 35v capacitors but I wasn't sure how many capacitors I should use for a speed run so I made seven capacitors of 2200 micro farads each connected in parallel and 35v but I can't tell the difference that it made because I am using Max6 esc and 1720kv motor but they don't have the telemetry so I can't see what is happening?
@RCexplained
@RCexplained 4 года назад
Hi Joseph, the calculation is quite complex with many variables. (Very Complex) Using 7 2200 μF in parallel is a lot of capacitance. I can't see you requiring more.

If you’re doing speedruns and you lose esc power or lipo comes unplugged you’ll be able to safely use the servo to steer your car of the road with the power left in the cap packs. Imagine 140mph with a sudden loss in braking or throttle input 💀
