Just learned "Farewell," found a fun trick with a loop pedal to get the double-guitar parts in the verses and final chorus. Wanted to say your music has probably been my number #1 influence in my learning the instrument over the last year, so stoked that I'm starting to be able to play some of your easier songs. Much love from the US :) ...Now to practice those sweep picking lines from Waterworks 😅

For me this year was "Farewell". When I found it on youtube, my father had recently become non-responsive from a failed cancer treatment, and I watched him pass away. I was so emotionally numb I couldn't even function. Farewell broke the dam for me and left me sobbing for who knows how long. It was cathartic, and vital in my healing journey. I've been a big fan of yours ever since.

I had 5 millions streams this year so I already know you made twice as much as me! I will also try to release as many weekly or bi-weekly songs over 2024. At the start of 2023 I released a lot and grew to 120k monthly listeners but I lost a lot this autumn after joining Spotify's new "Discovery Mode" which feels very ironic and sad. Back to focusing on writing one beautiful song at a time :)

Farewell was my favorite by far (and I've listened to the whole of waterworks) because I am hugely empathetic and I can almost feel the guitar trying to hold on as its life slips away...especially effective conceptualization because of the video you made here on RU-vid. You are awesome at all aspects: playing, teaching, creating, producing, etc... You deserve the success you've gained from all of your hard work and drive to this one thing...music.

Kudos on being a stand up guy as well as a very talented one. Oh, and your girlfriend has a wonderful voice. Additional collabs are in order. Add: I don't do Spotify, I am old and buy record albums or cd if available, FLAC if I can and mp320 as a last resort. I get new music from RU-vid and my son. I mean I'm glad you're making a living and your optimism and hustle is refreshing, but if you're making a song a week you're making 52 songs a year. That's 5 albums worth of music per year. That seems super artistically taxing and even as an audience member it's hard to really properly appreciate that much of an output without starting to view it as disposable, even if it's good. Also 42k is a living wage as a solo artist but splitting that amongst a band it's barely a side hustle. I know it's a small piece of various revenue streams and Spotify couldn't function if it was paying out more than it made, but it's hard to see those numbers as a musician and feel good about how it adds up, personally.

This is all great that it helps out when it comes to money and exposure for people who need to make a living. But I'd like it known that from a listeners perspective, we want artists to drop a whole album. It's an experience at that point. You can talk about it with friends. "What's your favorite song on the new album?...etc." This new method where artists drop one song at a time isn't as enjoyable and it's sad to see that this is the way things will probably always be from now on. Great video. Thank you for the breakdown.

The dollar amount is why artists do this. Things cost too much and even in music, streaming platforms aren’t willing to pay out an appropriate amount so we have to get content out quicker to keep the money flowing. To break it down further, if one did the math to that number and convert it to an hourly wage he’d only be making $14 an hour for an 8 hour work day if he was working every single day which I’m sure he is. It sucks.

Fantastic video! The problem with most being negative about streaming is that they are expecting hundreds of 💰💷 for a few thousand streams. I work with lots of artists. It’s very common from artists to think they can just upload a song, sit back and make millions without putting any effort in. Most have never even performed live to even understand how listeners react to music. All choices are made from the “4 wall experience”.

Working at one major streaming platform, I can confirm that most of these platforms have to pay ~70% of their revenue to rights holders (and yes I mean revenue, not net benefits, which are negative save for Spotify). The royalty system is based on market shares, so the more shares a label has (through streams of their artists), the bigger the part of the money they get. It's the up to labels to redistribute to their artists according to the contracts they signed with them, not everybody is treated equally there. In the end, low remuneration can be a 2 factor thing: - poor contract with the label - a market saturated with too many (and more to come) artists, resulting in lower shares for everybody There are attempts to remediate to the royalties system for more fairness (user centric / artist centric) but overall it won't make a huge difference.

Have you released any instrumentals on Spotify? If so, are the numbers different? I could look this up but I figure you might have far more to say. 40K is nothing to sneeze at for most of us but thinking that being a viral rockstar amounts to being able to cash for a regular car kinda puts constraints on ones wildest dreams. It's like your dad walks in and put his hand on your shoulder and go "If hookers & blow is your endgame it's time to put down the guitar son".
@abortedlord
@abortedlord 5 месяцев назад
Gotta put it in perspective though of that's only one stream of revenue. If you're making music for a living and one stream is bringing in 40K, now add on YT, now add on the myriad of other platforms; if he handles merchandise without a litany of middle men that = more income from that than many other artists also. That 40K could feasibly be stretched to 80 if you play the whole game rather than just focusing in on one revenue stream and that's just on sheer guess work.
@roynijssen7813
@roynijssen7813 5 месяцев назад
And that's being a solo artist! Most musicians are in a band and have to share the revenue 4-5 ways. Subtract the production costs and the cost of promotion and you end up with maybe 5-6k each for a years worth of streams!

Are you rich Bernth? You should be dude... i see you as a public service to axe wielders! Aka vikings! I appreciate you man! You're an inspiration and I'm a jazz player but fully believe in genre bending to see what can be incorporated into my technique. 👍 & 🛎 here always! Over 50 and massively impressed by your dedication and hard work! Some call that natural talent but I know you worked your arse off to reach your level!
