I’m a hobby seller moving into PT because my FT job isn’t covering living cost like it used to. I experimented with selling electronics and it was a headache, the trolling emails and questions. The only time I experienced scammers was when I was selling electronics. I was scammed twice, it was covered. I have lost money on other things. Like a person requesting a refund 4 months later and then forcing the return byway of their bank. I moved back to selling clothes, less issues.

I typically don’t buy stuff that requires excessive cleaning or testing, so it’s not a big time sink for me and fits into the additional 90 minutes I rounded up in my totals. Thanks for watching!

Two rookie mistakes I made recently were 1) buying an item that required too much cleaning - I should have looked it over more closely; 2) not testing a product before I cleaned it up. I spent a bit of time removing a sticker and wiping down the product only to discover it didn't work. Lessons learned.

I had my first international sale threw eBay international program . Buyer was from New Zealand and they were charged $25 for shipping by ebay. I was only charging $4.50 for shipping. Item was 4x6 photo on a piece of cardboard from 1890. They also paid a GST fee of $6.61 in addition to eBay. So they in total paid around $75. (Just clarify they paid my $4.50 local shipping plus $25.00 for international shipping). It will take approximately 30 days to travel from West coast to Chicago to New Zealand. -- Vintage or classic is 20 years or more. Antique is 100 years or more.

Just an FYI. I was at eBay Open last year and was told from the international selling group that they only inspect and repackage a select amount of items. They said less than 10%. I surmised that it was certain categories that get selected most often. I asked one of my international buyers if they would not mind sending me a picture of the packaging when they received the item. Unfortunately, they did not follow through, but I plan to ask again on my next international sale. Mainly, just out of curiosity.

I also do free shipping and match the market price because I'm on the west coast so calculated shipping eliminated many buyers from purchasing because of shipping. I think people are greedy and don't realize that collecting a buck or two on one sale may keep them from getting 10 other sales giving them more money in the long run.

I have a question: What are your thoughts on listings that use variations versus individual listings for each item? For example, Video game resellers will sometimes make one listing with a main picture that shows a pile of video games. The potential buyer can then go into the listing and select from the available games. So that sellers listing will pop up anytime someone searches for a game that is in the list. But the main picture never shows any specific game. If the seller made individual listings, that listing would only come up when specifically searched for, but the buyer would be presented with an individual picture of the exact item. I'm a game seller myself and I'd love your insight. Sorry for the long question...

Hey Justin, love the channel and I look forward to it every Monday. This might be too specific of a question but I'll try anyway. I have been creating a bunch of drafts in anticipation of properly connecting my bank account to my Ebay Account. Now that's it's connected, when I try to set up fixed cost letter mail shipping (for trading cards) the app removes the shipping option immediately. The only work around I've found so far is to enter the shipping on my PC, but this is extremely time consuming. Do you have experience with Ebay glitches and how do you deal with them?

Ive learned a TON from you..i totally agree with you on calculated shipping vs Flat Rate..my question is about International you and msny others say Ebay handles international shipping...my first handful of international sales was handled by Ebay where i shipped to their place in Illinois..Yet every international sale ive had in 2024..another half , dozen i had no options offered other than straight shipping to Turkey, Tel Aviv, Moracco, South Africa., Australia and Canada. The Canada 1 was the only 1 i didnt cancel cause the buyer paid enough..why and what are the criteria for the difference?

Totally agree about the shipping thing... as a buyer I get a bad taste in my mouth when I'm charged over 9.99 shipping let alone 19.99 even if that is what the item would cost to ship. It is totally a phycological thing. I will almost never charge over 14.99 shipping unless the item is actually giant. I would rather build the cost into the price or even eat a little of the shipping cost for a faster sale of a mid-tier item. There are so many examples of someone pricing people out of buying their item by charging too much shipping when, for example, I know I could ship for cheaper or simply don't want to ask that much period. This is especially true for things like glass collectables where some buyers seem to want you to pay for their bubblewrap or something too (can't think of any other reason to charge 10.99 shipping on a 6 ounce product).
@CarolGuidi-r8f

agree. some sellers claim to charge a "handling fee," (because my time is worth something, or so the thinking goes) I would think that reduces their volume rather significantly. If you want to actually sell things, be glad you have a buyer and can agree on a price. ebay is not "white glove service." Head over to Chairish or 1st dibs for that! $$$$

My understanding of the word retro is that it is the same as "repop" or is a rerun of a vintage style. For example I think if something was made in the 90s in the style of the 70s, that would be considered both retro and vintage, but for different reasons

Calculated shipping (for me) is a big hassle because you have to pack the item and weigh/measure the box while creating the listing. Which means you have to have enough of the correct boxes on hand for every single item. Then buyers STILL end up asking me 'how much to ship to...' when the calculator is right there on the listing. I've also had someone cancel an order (just messaging me and saying "cancel my order") when she 'found out' how much shipping was going to cost (even though it was calculated shipping, I wasn't profiting on it, and she could have checked before hand) It's not my price, lady, that's the actual rate from USPS!
@IntoTheVerticalBlank
@IntoTheVerticalBlank 3 месяца назад
On calculated shipping or not, I have found that on heavier items the newer "Fedex Home delivery" is a lot less expensive than UPS and very reliable. You can't use it from Pirate Ship (as far as I can find), but it is available from eBay, It can make the cost look lower for calculated and BE lower for flat =)
@CarolanRoss
@CarolanRoss 3 месяца назад
THX Justin. About international shipping, agree on MANY advantages for seller. However, the cost IS significantly more for the buyer. I recently was messenging back-and-forth with a potential buyer. She mentioned total with shipping and it didn't sound right, so I asked what she meant. She sent me a screenshot and I was shocked to see shipping cost from her end. Sale around $20 for a small lightweight clothing item, yet to ship US to Canada would have been around $55 total! Pay over $30 shipping for a $20 item? What? Despite the obvious advantages for sellers with the EIS program, the HUGE mark-up for buyers is SO extreme. Until recently, I had no idea how much eBay increased pricing for international sales. Despite seller advantages, this looks BAD. Can't blame potential international buyers for avoiding such, so overall maybe not such a good thing? Maybe international buyers will in some cases 'pay UP' in order to get their hands on a unique or rare item, yet I suspect that international sales would increase significantly if not so price gauged. It makes sense that eBay would increase rates for all of the seller advantages, but THAT much? International sales on eBay may have increased since the recent change, but if so that be simply due to the significantly higher number of sellers who finally opened the door and agreed to it. On the other hand, many who used to buy internationally have stopped doing so. I rarely see this topic discussed anywhere, and would welcome it if you are so inclined.

If you live in the middle of the country or even near the middle, you can do the flat shipping method, but I’d say if you live on one side of the country, you kind of need to do calculated. I’m in MA and if someone in CA bought something from me and I didn’t do calculated, I’d get really screwed on heavier items. Shipping methods all depend on where you are located in the country. That’s why there’s no blanket answer for everyone. Because of the size of California, sellers here in New England sell a ton of stuff there.

Unless your DVDs are known to be worth money (extremely rare/limited editions/4K UHD BD/out of print and obscure etc.), they are not even worth selling in lots. Anything mainstream and common is literally worthless, even in lots they usually cost more to ship than they are worth and if they do sell they sit around FOREVER. And I say this as someone who sells DVDs. (Same applies to CDs, though it is not nearly as bad as DVDs.)

The vero program is not about brands you're not allowed to sell, you are really misunderstanding it. Individual brands may choose to use the program to try and exert rights they do not have to limit your selling, but that isn't why the program exists or what it's function is. The program is ebay's attempt to meet the requirements of various copyright laws enacted by congress. It is supposed to be about protecting intellectual property. As ebay's own page says, infringement can be: unauthorized use of trademark unauthorized copies of media unauthorized use of protected images and text NOT reselling a brand in general, you have the right to do that. The list you scrolled through in the program are PARTICIPANTS, not a list of brand you "can't" sell. As a voice in this community you have a responsibility to convey accurate info, and all of us resellers need to understand OUR rights, and that a "do not sell" list is a violation of OUR rights, not an infringement of intellectual property.

I live in a very easy to get to location in Mid Michigan that trailers and even semi's have access to. What do you think about selling these types using the buy it now with pick up in person option? But I have gotten a few now (3 removed, one remained until today) and each time my sales call completely stop for a few days. Does that happen to you or is there a point when your metrics are so good that the algorithm doesn’t even notice a negative feedback anymore? Or at least not enough to slow sales? Or is this maybe just coincidence? Guess that was 3 questions…

Please note, theirs sticky fingers at ebays international shipping program, though you are off of the hook its not a good look on you. I bought a lot of over 1 thousand cabinet photos and Cdvs and when I got it it was only around 700ish left. Me and the seller compared the weights of the box when he shipped it to when i received it, and it was drastically different. The only reason i didnt bother sending it back for a full refund is that there was still multiple thousands or dollars in photos. My biggest gripe is that the cabinet photos and cdvs that got stolen were circus freaks, and military. Tons of value lost. Just air on the side of caution when buying bulk lots through GSP. Rant end.

Great video, Justin. I sent a rare Scalextric set to a buyer in the US. The Global Shipping centre repackaged it and some of their own Ebay tape stuck to the box lid and ripped it apart when the buyer attempted to open it at their end.🤦🏼‍♂️ They were not best pleased, as you can imagine. Ebay were fine and sorted everything straight away. International shipping is fine providing you remember the items will be opened, inspected and repackaged by Ebay before the buyer receives it.

What happens if my buyer gets upset it’s not coming to them priority and they paid 3x more the shipping cost for priority mail?

Send it Priority and keep the buyer happy. What MAY be a problem is Germany's BS "packaging law" if you are sending it directly to Germany yourself, and it may or may not arrive and be seized because of that German law few people know about. Never ship to Germany except through EIS which handles the "German packaging law" baloney for you.

Thanks to you, I spotted a Herman Miller chair at a yard sale and knew what it was!! I paid a whopping $10 for it. It’s in perfect condition; and like you, I’m keeping it for myself. 😂

I don’t really agree with the hours you specified for listing and shipping especially because you mainly deal in hard goods which require much more time and attention to list and ship. If it was books and media sure what you said is reasonable but please don’t give people false impression of how much work it actually takes

I was wondering about your breakdown of the hours spent on Ebay work. Somethings you used "we" and other things you used "I" but you didn't double the hours worked for the "we" work. Does your wife do "I" work that you are counting as "we"? Or are you not counting the work your wife does for Ebay sales? Just curious.

wife does the shipping, I do the listing... so no split there, but we do source together quite frequently! I did not double the time there, though.

with all these resellers out there and millions of views on their channels is there anyone who actually buys knowing they just paid 60 bucks for something they know the other paid 3 for?

I sold VCR for $330 plus shipping and I only paid $5 for the VCR. Not every VCR is worth what I sold this one for.

Of course there is? If people couldn’t make profit, they wouldn’t be selling things. Thats how literally every business you’ve ever been to works. If they don’t, they go out of business.

I do! I don’t have a traditional full-time job. The majority of my time is spent running the tech startup I co-founded.

Very good and honest review on how running a Ebay business is. Needs to be more Tubers like you. Also Ebay Global shipping does have a insurance max. Ebay will not cover items worth 1k or more. You have to handle this responsibility yourself.

Ebay sucks most if the time. Not everyone shops on eBay, finding things for profitable is hard, fess add up, and returns are a nightmare.

@@lexir7504 top rated sellers offers free shipping on returns but it becomes a nightmare when buyers receive a new item then return it, buyers receive any item the return it without caring to package it right, and when they return an item broken or different item then ebay sides whith the buyer on all of the above and sellers get an item the invested on that they can't resell amd have to refund the item plus the shipping.

I believe you are responsible for returns on the international shipping program if they open a return "item not as described" because in that case, you sold an item that is not correct, it isn't broken, you just didn't describe it properly.
