We stayed in the Park Hyatt Vendôme and paid with points but upgraded to the penthouse suite with a balcony that was the width of the entire building. I think we paid about €1000 per night for the upgrade but the cash value of the suite for that week was almost €3k per night and we really enjoyed having the extra space for my daughter to run around in.

Thats why the airlines charge so much for flying from USA to Europe ( maybe five times more than the other direction) so that Americans can use points and think they ve got a bargain...

I don't think the airlines increase pricing so that Americans can get high cents per point. I think they charge higher prices because 1. revenue management told them to and 2. they charge as much as they can while still being able to sell tickets. We have a podcast episode covering how airlines think about pricing points flights here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b8GLk9E2s2A.html I haven't really seen that flights from USA to Europe cost 5x more than Europe to USA. They're usually comparable, though it can vary a lot by date.

Have you ever tried comparing these trips with the price of a trip if you paid in cash without the point constraints? With the equivalent cashback value of points + cash (roughly $10k) I wouldn't be surprised if you can book a similarly luxurious stay, just not in the same hotels. Also, when the price of a particular ticket is an outlier, doesn't it make sense to compare the points price to other alternatives? Sure, LAS-FRA on Eurowings might be $7k pp that day but if there are other flights for $2k you're not really getting 10cpp.

I have tried, but haven't settled on a methodology since then it's not apples to apples. "You can stay at PH Paris for 45k points or $1000 per night. There's Le Luxe Hotel (made up name) down the street that's a comparable level of luxury. I didn't stay there, but you can book it for $700 per night" I think would open up a whole can of worms because I don't have a good consistent rating system for "comparable level of luxury" Similar with airlines, "you can book this direct Eurowings flight for 70k points or $7000. There's also a United business class flight on the award date I happened to find on seats.aero for $3500. Also an Air Canada business class flight on a completely different date outside of our itinerary for $2000. It's not a direct flight and the cabin experience is going to be apples to oranges, but it's another way to fly there if you prefer money vs. points" Idk if people want to sit through an extra 10 minutes of video for me to go through all the different combinations since I try to make these videos, "here's the exact flights and hotels I booked, what they supposedly cost in cash, how much I paid instead by using points, and how you could recreate the same itinerary if you want to fly the same flights and stay at the same hotels" (if you do, lmk and I'll see if I can work that into the next one of these trip cost breakdowns that I do). That being said, when we do client work, we absolutely do that cost benefit analysis all the time are like, "yeah, just save your points for the next trip and take this other route as a cash route instead."

@@geobreezetravel Thanks for the thought out response! In the case of extremely inflated values, maybe average market price of comparable products would be more complicated/subjective but way more accurate.

Thank you so much for your videos and advice! Excellent! BUT: Please stop recommending Air Lingus as an option for transatlantic flights. Their are the worst airline for those trips. Ask other, it's not just me (and I travel since 45 years the world)

Hi Julia, please make a video on how to calculate mileage points to cash values, both for hotels and flights, on the popular credit cards like Capital Venture X, IHG, Chase Cards, etc. A good comparison of these points value and how one can redeem point by point? That will help understand how you figure out how it's better to pay in cash versus points? I hope my question makes sense. I'm such a newbie to this. I've just started opening cards which I will build or save points for two years before I start my slow and long travels worldwide. Thank you very much.

cents per point = cash price divided by points price. For transferrable points like Capital one, Amex, BILT, etc., aim for the ratio to be at least 0.02. For IHG, at least 0.006 if your CPP ratio is higher than those thresholds, use points. Otherwise, save the points and use cash.
