This looks as an stupid experiment, but actually is very interesting from an ecological point of view. The dispersal capacity (how far can they spread) of individual insects it is, in a big part, determined by the egg mass they can carry with and the distance they can fly. The more eggs, the more chances the next generation has to colonize a new spot, but the closer that spot will be from the original site. On the other hand, less eggs mean less chances but higher distances. So every insect "faces this choice": more eggs or further distances. There is no correct answer, but in general there are some upper and lower limits and a diversity of strategies within the same species. (By the way, I wrote my doctoral thesis on insect dispersal, so I should know what I am talking about)

@@HomemadeEcosystems Without being an expert, I would say the R/K strategy is not necesarily related to this trade-off, as we are comparing mass of eggs with flying capacity (so does not matter if there are a lot of tiny eggs or few big eggs, what it matters is the weight of all eggs combined). My thesis is on mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies, but we did not look into "effective dispersal" but, let's say, functional dispersal. This is, we did not took into account the reproductive side, but just the flying distances and so on. Also, I am an Ecologist, not an entomologist, so I looked at all this topic from the point of view of ecoystem processes and interactions. So I do not know much about the insects themselves!

Can safely put flies in the fridge instead of the freezer, and leave it there for days and it'll be fine, and extends their lifespan (it's how some keep flies as feeders). It'll be able to fly sooner then if from freezer tho.

i've never tried leashing a fly, but i have leashed a paper wasp or two. i used the fridge method for that, and though i did have to put them back in a couple times, it was more because i sucked at getting the thread around their waists than them warming up too quick. 😅 it makes sense that flies would recover faster than the wasps did, as there's a lot less cold that needs to be dispelled from their smaller bodies before they can regain mobility. 😀

You need to do a house tour. I keep imagining every square meter from ceiling to floor is covered in terrariums and storage tanks, save for a small walking pathway. Even your wife just sleeps in a giant tank beside your bed with coconut substrate and a nice piece of wood, gently misted with a bottle of rainwater every night before bedtime.
