I loved the simple Q&A format between sets. The best and simplest coverage of some of those topics (“why deadlift”, “what’s a belt good for”) by someone with a more strength focused audience.

I’m 56 and have myositis and multiple, old injuries( myositis is currently in remission. I was weak as a kitten until my son’s, both lifters, encouraged me to go to the gym. First 6 months was hell. After nearly 2 years of reasonably regular training, my dl just hit 300lbs. Not super impressive but I’m very happy with that and I’m still making consistent gains.

Well after spending the last 10+ years as a piece of furniture, and living a sedentary life I got some work to do to get to 315lbs DL. 245lbs lost and feeling good, but man it is a kick in the teeth to see what being over 500lbs will do to your body and overall health. Thanks for the videos and motivation.

Getting up to 625 was pretty easy for me on a basic routine. Volume was my friend. One deadlift day for 5x5 or 3x3, 3x8-12 for rdl, bb row or tbar row, cable rows, glute ham raises, hamstring curls, hyper extensions, Another day for squat pattern and quad work Adding weight every week at your level should be quit easy if you’re pushing yourself and focusing. Always improving technique and never cheating the rom

Woah, losing 245 is probably much rarer than a 315 DL, even for people over 500! Seriously much more impressive. You just added so much time to your health span and quality of life. Keep it up!!! If you want to deadlift 315, it will come with less effort and a LOT more fun. Lifting increases my appetite, so I'm always prepared with a large but filling post workout shake of 30g lean whey, 300 cals frozen fruit, and 200 grams of sugar and fat free yoghurt. Its filling and delicious. (erythritol if you want to add a natural calorie- free sweetener which works well with fruit). For my lifting workouts I probably break even - at best - on net calories with the workout plus the shake. But lifiting lets you be noticeably stronger all day every day, and increases lean body mass. Just deadlift with good form 2 times a week, 4 to 5 working sets per workout, rep-range of 10-15 should be fine and minimize injury risk. Time 3-4 min rest between sets. Start lower than needed and progressively add weight each workout and set so that on your last few sets you are 0-3 reps away from absolute failure. You'll get to a 315 one rep max in no time. This is not the most optimal for strength, but it's simple and safe, and based on recent literature of rep-ranges, progressive overload, optimal rest times, total weekly volume, etc. Just like the weight loss, consistency and patience are key.

Thank you for showing that everyone can and needs to do the same movements you do (in much smaller ways lol) in everyday life. You inspire me to keep working away at it, despite physical infirmaries. To me, that means that every time I drop something on the floor is an opportunity to work on my bracing and my breath. My goal is to deadlift a teeny amount, maybe 25lbs, but, with my disability, that alone would be huge. Thank you for helping me improve my quality, and, quite probably, the length of my life. I’m so glad my interest in strongman back in the 80’s led me to you today lol! ❤ from Canada

Random fact for the algorithm: In the same way that people use two eyes to perceive depth, people use two ears to locate the origin of sounds. The left ear receives sound waves coming from the left slightly faster than the right ear does.
@DreJr
@DreJr Год назад
I will add one. You don't actually perceive anything visually while your eyes move. Your brain will freeze your vision on the last 'frame' you saw before your eyes began moving and resume seeing when the movement is finished. You can test this by looking in a mirror, looking left and right and trying to see your eyes move. If I remember correctly the reason was the rapid eye movements of your eye would freak out your brain or something like that.
@anthonyproffitt5341
@anthonyproffitt5341 Год назад
You absolutely can perceive things while your looking around. Your your focus isn’t their, but those that have greater awareness and gather more information and react to it while scanning an area with eye movement.
@DreJr
@DreJr Год назад
@@anthonyproffitt5341 I think you're misunderstanding. You will not perceive the break in visual processing while 'scanning an area', so again... test it in a mirror and see if you can perceive your pupils moving when you look left to right slowly and quickly. Look up saccadic masking. And I'm not sure it is what you meant, but highly trained observers can avoid this when tracking a moving target, but the vast majority of people cannot.

@mightynathaniel5355 Год назад
Most animals with ears can move their ears independently to help locate sounds and map things 3Dimensionally, human lost the control of the muscles of the ears and instead turn their entire head by moving their neck around while their ears stay stuck still, making us uniquely bad at it compared to many wild animals and compared to our ancestors.

I love the "you don't know the context" about the range of motion comment. I had some bros talking a lot of shit about me one time at the gym because I was doing quarter squats with 545lbs. But they didn't know that I was doing brace prep for an upcoming powerlifting meet where I load 20% more than my 1RM, unrack it, and do some quarter squats to practice bracing very heavy load well above my target weight so that when I go for like a 5-10% increase to my PR during the meet, it feels light when I unrack it and I easily prevent the first mental barrier when maxing out of "oh shit, this feels heavy".
@ADHDlanguages
@ADHDlanguages Год назад
Interesting. I know people do walkouts with >maximal loads, but I haven't seen intentional quarter squats from people who know how to actually squat. I'll have to give it a shot if I do ever peak for a pl meet.

Pretty sure I can tell the difference between this and someone simply trying to do a weight they can’t do. Now if I see you struggle really fucking hard doing a quarter squat with some weight this no breaking of mental barrier will make u lift it for a full rep in a competition precisely for the calculation mitch hopper stated early in the video.

I mean. If I can make progress I'm gonna make it. I'm at 350. I only recently started occasionally doing deadlifts. Now some for reps. Carefully. I originally went to the gym to strengthen abs and lower back out of necessity. I don't feel committed to deadlifts. Just feels like the way to go after maxing out the lower back machine. I wasn't all that committed too that either. Strong enough already. It's just a nice in between exercise while you Rest something else. 350 is 160 kg. They got 2 low back machines. The heavier one feels worse ergonomically and I'm at 17-20 reps. I 😅kinda don't like high reps that much though. The lighter one I'm at 35 reps. So I guess I'll try to do 110-140 kg for reps n see if I can crack 200 kg eventually. I've seen guy's having a bad" it's enough" attitude towards legpress. Like hell. You are here. You train that. At least add a small plate more eventually? It's one thing to not want to spend 1x time per week, do another set. But why not at least try progress.
@Heidinn217
@Heidinn217 11 месяцев назад
the deadlift is basically a spiritual exercise to me lol, Its the most important. If you want to target low back, try to take the legpress out of the bottom of the deadlift and just do straight leg deadlift. also wearing a belt, makes it easier but can help utilize your abs more since theyre contracting against the best aiding in the lift@@gur262 im at 515lbs deadlift right now, but i throw it all on the low back lol

I'll hard disagree on 315. It's probably not any effort for the WSM, but the regular folks, it's actually a big ass weight. For real world situations, you're never going to be lifting anything that heavy on your own. Even a 150lb box like in the leverage example, you are going to do it with help.

Genetic outliers excluded... Every healthy male should be able to conventional deadlift 300lbs to 500lbs, in my opinion. (Sumo is a different story.) No serious effort, just consistent lifting. 600lbs is the start of unattainable for most unless you actually dedicate yourself to deadlift. You actually have to structure your life in such a way to ensure it's conducive for attaining such a goal - and you still might fail regardless. So yeah, 300lbs should be attainable for virtually all healthy males, IMO.

I think more than a specific weight for a "healthy individual" it should probably be a ratio to their weight whether it be a percentage or like 1.5 or 2 times their body weight. I am still working on my deadlift as it’s lower than my back squat currently which I know isn’t typical. I’ve talked to a few people about it and I have some form issues that we worked on and PR’d but another sticking point seems to be my grip. I prefer the overhand grip as all the others feel awkward and get me out of position for some reason. I wouldn’t saw I’m exactly healthy but my deadlift is more than what you said is a good weight.

How much does an average man need to lift? 315 is more than enough. However with training every healthy man should be able to do considerably more. I'm 43 years old, nothing special, but im still good for 500 plus.

Amazing, good luck. People with negative comments just don't understand strong-man training. Ignore them. Keep doing you.

Why the small range of motion and high reps on the leg press? I assume its for locking out deadlift? I don’t quite understand “did set 4 and 5 together”, if you have 20 RIR at the end of the set, how were sets 1-3 useful volume? I’m sure you have good reasons for both, its just so different from traditional weight training!

What's a good reasonable goal for a strict overhead press? My gut says 1.25x to 1x body weight, the larger you are the closer to 1x. This is on a barbell not a log or anything awkward. But as someone with no experience being built like a college lineman, I don't know how common guys 6'3+ 275-350lbs are and if bodyweight is still reasonable for guys so huge. All the guys I've known that big have been doing things that professionally have them getting strong on the job, so its hard to say if that's a fair sample to judge strength off of and whats important for them, for staying healthy.

I deadlifted 275 for 3 reps last week and tweaked my left glute, maybe the piriformis. I've got work to do before hitting 315 lol

That range of motion is allot better than what I’ve seen I my gym 😂. But in all seriousness judging from the the depth my guess is you’re conditioning your patella tendons- I would do the same for mine.

Tbh 315 is definitely doable but I don’t think it would be necessary or mandatory if lifting isn’t your interest.
