I started my set at MS64, mainly because I wanted to start with the 1878-CC, and in MS64 it was around $1000 but in MS65 it was around $2000. Then I got all that I thought I could reasonably afford in MS64. Then I started filling in holes with lower graded coins. Here is what I ended up with, all slabbed PCGS (sorry long read). 1878-CC MS64 $820 1879-CC VF25 $656 1880-CC MS64 $875 1881-CC MS64 $922 1882-CC MS64 $384 1883-CC MS64 $408 1884-CC MS64 $312 1885-CC MS64 $819 1889-CC VF30 $2500 1890-CC MS64 $2209 1891-CC MS64 $1197 1892-CC MS62 $2100 (from Old Pueblo Coin) 1893-CC XF40 $2385 Carson City cost: $15,587 1879-O MS64 $625 1880-O MS61 $144 1881-O MS64 $199 1882-O MS64 $142 1883-O MS64 $118 1884-O MS64 $111 1885-O MS64 $98 1886-O AU58 $504 1887-O MS64 $432 1888-O MS64 $129 1889-O MS63 $600 1890-O MS64 $335 1891-O MS62 $288 1892-O MS64 $1049 1893-O VF35 $718 1894-O AU50 $325 1895-O VF30 $456 1896-O AU58 $565 1897-O AU55 $236 1898-O MS64 $107 1899-O MS64 $90 1900-O MS64 $121 1901-O MS64 $123 1902-O MS64 $119 1903-O MS64 $693 1904-O MS64 $84 New Orleans cost: $8,411 1878 8TF MS64 $787 1878 7/8TF Strong MS63 $495 1878 7TF MS64 $384 1879 MS64 $248 1880 MS64 $129 1881 MS64 $154 1882 MS64 $90 1883 MS64 $123 1884 MS64 $123 1885 MS64 $88 1886 MS64 $90 1887 MS64 $90 1888 MS64 $123 1889 MS64 $110 1890 MS64 $143 1891 MS64 $680 1892 MS63 $720 1893 XF45 $617 1894 AU55 $2500 1896 MS64 $106 1897 MS64 $183 1898 MS64 $141 1899 MS64 $432 1900 MS64 $117 1901 AU53 $475 1902 MS64 $315 1903 MS64 $168 1904 MS64 $664 1921 MS64 $90 Philly cost: $10,385 1878-S MS64 $216 1879-S MS64 $136 1880-S MS64 $153 1881-S MS64 $99 1882-S MS64 $120 1883-S MS61 $1440 1884-S AU55 $1020 1885-S MS64 $750 1886-S MS64 $1175 1887-S MS61 $168 1888-S MS64 $1080 1889-S MS64 $693 1890-S MS64 $360 1891-S MS63 $312 1892-S AU50 $2228 1893-S VF25 $6400 1894-S MS64 $3750 1895-S AU53 $2500 1896-S XF45 $552 1897-S MS64 $240 1898-S MS64 $1205 1899-S MS64 $1012 1900-S MS64 $1020 1901-S MS64 $1999 1902-S AU58 $432 1903-S VF35 $400 (Old Pueblo Coin) 1904-S AU50 $1500 1921-S MS64 $369 San Fran cost: $31,329 Total cost: $65,712 Average grade 54.1 There's a few I definitely could have picked up at a higher grade. But as I saw a coin available for what I perceived to be a good price, and it filled a hole, I got it. Now the quest is to slowly get some of the 29 coins that are below MS64 at least a little closer to MS64. So even though the set is complete, it will never be finished!

It's hard to see how some of these 'details cleaned' are slabbed and receive this designation. Most of the time I cannot see how a coin was deemed as 'cleaned'. Regardless, they fill a spot and, for the most part, attractive.

I immediately thought of the 93 S. I didn't know what an MS 62 would cost, but my first thought was that it would be a load. It makes some of the tougher CC's look like child's play.

Great topic, Ben! I think an MS62 set is unrealistic for most of us, but a nice complete set is still obtainable, even if you have a limited budget. I’ve been working on mine since 2008, and I am just over halfway there. My advice… buy the key/semi-coins first! It’s takes a lot of self-discipline to save up for nicer coins, but you will be better off in the end, as these coins tend to increase in value faster than the common coins. I have all the keys now except for the 79-O- all PCGS straight graded coins, from VF20-MS65. I bought my 93-S in 2013 … it’s a VF20 PCGS/CAC … for $4695. This coin is about $7500ish today, and if I waited to buy it last, I would have to settle for a VG for that price today. Good luck, all! It’s a big challenge, but a wonderful journey!

PCGS lists the entire morgan dollar set in MS62 at $652K. They also have the complete date set priced at $14425 in MS62. I wonder what the 96 coin set is worth in CACG MS62. Morgan dollars are probably the most collected coin of all the older coin series. The best way to collect the 96 coin set is to buy the key dates in lower grades.

Think of the stunning type set you could put together with $500k… with high grade examples of nearly every type. It would be a visually interesting and beautiful collection that even a non-collector could appreciate. I think it would have much more eye appeal than 96 Morgan dollars in the same lower mint state condition.

I put together a decent date set years ago for around $2000. All the common are UNC the 93 AU, 94o AU 95o Vf/Xf.

I collected Morgans by year and am missing 1891 to 1895 and 1903. Most were bought in 1972 for $3.90 each at Stack's in New York and are in MS63 to MS65 condition. They had a huge pile in the window, which drew me in. None of the coins are rare, no CC's, but are beautiful in their black ring airtites.

I've been collecting Morgans for years. I've been able to get a lot of the coins in Unc, even some of the semi-keys. Of course, this was a long time ago before Morgans got hot and in demand. If a semi-key is expensive, I look out for a coin with minor cleaning and can usually pick it up for a nice discount. Of course, I'm missing the heavy hitters (1889-CC, 1893-S, 1895-P) and a few other better dates. It's unfortunate the Carson City dollars are now really expensive, even though the majority can be found just about anywhere. The 1899-P and 1901-P are truly scarce in mint state and should catalogue more than what they do.

Even if I won the lottery I wouldn't build a Morgan set. I just can't get into them. I'd rather spend that on gold or proofs or ancient stuff that's just so wildly cool to me. To each their own though in coin collecting

Wow! 500k for a mint state set. I’ll take 5, lol. My plan is to buy a low graded coin for each key date. Then buy some raw uncirculated coins for the book. Next, I mix in some fun with the highest graded coin I can get for around $300. Like a Carson city gsa in a box or ms66 65 67 from a common date. And for funding, a second job at Wendy’s helps or a big fat loan.

Without knowing that value ahead of time, I thought maybe I could do it at MS64 or better for most, but probably not getting the’93-S (in any grade) so I went ahead and got started. Oof, half a million! I might not have started if I had really thought about it. Of course I have some of the more common ones in MS65-66+, but the tougher dates/mints that I do have range from VG8 to AU58+, and there’s still 9 left for me to get in some grade (79-CC, ‘92-S, ‘93-CC, ‘93-S, ‘94,-P, 94-O, ‘95-S, ‘96-S, ‘01-P). It’s fun, challenging, but I may never complete it.

That's an interesting question to have asked and conversation stimulator.I recently picked up a '92-s in a VG8+/VG10ish grade that looks pleasantly unmolested and very natural/original, with clean obverse fields and no detracting problems. Would I like to have it in a higher grade with more detail present? Sure, but at some point I decided I liked/could live with the look of the coin, and just wasn't eager to spend more for an example. I have other more comman date Morgans as my MS and BU examples if I need to revel in full breast feathers and the veins in the cotton leaves, and cartwheel luster. All a question of priorities and what a persons intention is in the coins they choose. Me, I'm not trying to impress anyone, I reminded myself that I do need to be realistic about the budget, and this coin among others, is to me still a pleasure to have found at a reasonable price, to sit and ponder it's place in history, and spurs me on to locating other nice candidates for other series I like, or individual coins I would like to find/purchase in the future. Thanks Ben

I won't be buying that collection anytime soon. I'm poor. But I am putting together quite the collection of obsolete bank notes from an obsolete town that nobody in the entire universe except myself is interested in. That must put the value of this set all the way up to $0 and that's on the high side. I'm absolutely loving putting this set together but how stupid is it for me to do if there's zero interest in it? Until I find a millionaire who's wanting it as much as I want it, it's a 100% money out of my pocket with no return in sight.
