The Italian Mafia: a criminal organization infamous for its strict code of honor and the habit of decapitating unsuspecting horses. Yet there was a brief period in Italian history when the mafiosi weren't the baddest boys in town ... that honor went to Mussolini and his fascist aficionados. So how did Mussolini beat the Italian mafia?

@@iltoni6895 The Law is not the be all and end all, as tools of government are used to shelter criminals from the consequences of their actions, it becomes necessary to tear down those institutions. And redraw the cards, a New Deal if you will - involving a lot a blood. It's part of the cycle of governance; during democracy, power is eventually concentrated in the hands of a few, forming an oligarchy. An oligarchy's goal is to maintain the status-co, leading to governance paralysis - the Stasis - and eventually strife. Out of the upheaval a tyrant emerges to purge the institutions. Tyrant wasn't always a dirty word, as the tyrant needed the support of the common people against oligarchs. When the tyrant's grip on power slipped, people rose up to put democracy in place and the cycle continued. Within this frame of thought, the Law is just a transitory state where things can settle down a bit, in between periods of upheavals. The cycle of crises is the rule, not the rule of law.

The American mafia did not return to Sicily because it was inevitable. In 1944, the US Government, by the OSS, delivered a few select mafiosi (Lucky Luciano, for example) to Sicily in order to organize a resistance movement from former mafiosi, and even provided heaps of firearms for them. In a sense, he did defeat them. Because the defining principle of the mafia was to act outside the scope and influence of the state; to be independent of it. Mussolini made it so that you either had to either become part of the state or perish. But once he was dead, they were free to go back to their old ways without fear of being hunted down. It's akin to how emperors would destroy rival kings' armies, only to hand it back to them under the condition that they serve the emperor whenever he would call upon them. The local king retained his kingship, and the emperor became king of kings.

But what the narrator fails to mention is the reason why that was is because when Patton re took Sicily, the Americans placed in power whom they thought were political prisoners, when in reality they were don bosses. So really, it’s mostly America’s fault. They also fail to mention that Mussolini reinvigorated the economy throughout most of Italy, and brought a strong foundation to their society... all be it as it may at the cost of freedom of ideas, expression, freedom of press, speech, and then later brought the country to ruin through a failed war.

There seems to be an almost laughable attempt to point Mori as the Villian here. Although it's true that Mori surrounded Gangi he didn't slaughter any cattle or kidnap any women or children (what use would he have for these tactics anyway). he simply used the soldiers to go door to door and arrest the Mafia members (he used army tactics as the Mafia were essentially an army at that point). He also didn't Assasinate any Mafia members, the only member killed were the ones that tried to attack him or his forces (during arrest or otherwise). Finally his methods were largely ineffective in the long run for 2 reasons: 1 he wasn't allowed to arrest a lot of the high level Mafiosos as they were affiliated with the Fascist regime (in fact that was the reason he was selfed) and 2: the US freed or transported back most of the Mafia members after the invasion of Sicily and even gave them support and high ranking position in exchange for helping the US maintain the population under control

Before the chaos of Italian unification starting in 1815, the southern parts of Italy had been ruled by the iron hand of absolute monarchies, first Spanish, then Austrian and then Spanish again. But when Napoleon invaded Italy and placed one of his marshals on the throne of Naples and Sicily, all hell broke loose. It was hard to rein in the chaos for the reinstated Bourbon kings after 1815. Hitler: go concentration camp Mussolini: drink castor oil Fun fact about Mussolini: is that instead of sending the gays to a tragic end into concentration camps like Hitler he sent them all to a beautiful island in the Mediterranean sea where they could do as they pleased as long as they remained there. When after the war the island residents were brought back the members of the gay community that existed where crying at the idea of having to leave the only place they could openly be themselves and where they were allowed to dress as they pleased, have open relationships and were everyone simply expected anyone them to be gay. One of the people sent to the island wrote that his happiest days were preparing welcome parties for when the ship brought new people to the island, wondering if they were going to get a new singer or someone handsome and while at the beginning the place was quite spartan by the time they left they had theaters, music areas and their own farms and made that island their home.

It is extremely unfortunate that he tied himself to the Germans instead of staying neutral like Franco or Salazar. He would've made a great ally in the fight against Bolshevism and he would've made a good check on the ambitions of post-war Germany.

@@97Corvi Was it fun to live as a colony of England and France, dependent on them for even food? Was it fun to live in an agrarian, illiterate plutocracy run by landowners, priests and mafiosos? Mussolini was Italy's own Ataturk, only despised today for having lost. His only true crime was how his army conducted itself in Ethiopia and Yugoslavia, which was no different to how the English and French operated in their colonies.

@@97Corvi Absolutely irrelevant to the discussion. Lincoln was not a founding father of America, yet he is still held dear to Americans. And Ataturk wasn't founder of the Turkish nation either, that would be Alp Arslan. Mussolini was a modernizer and reformer, and laid the basis for the modern economic functions of the Italian nation state.

You forgot the part where Mussolini helped millions of Italians, especially women who were little girls with free, high quality education and breakfast which wasn't allowed or could be afforded before him -just one example. The most misunderstood leader in history.
