Thank you for sharing this delightful conversation! You had a wonderful time discussing various aspects of a traditional Christmas dinner, including the excitement and challenges of cooking turkey, the intricacies of side dishes like cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets, and Yorkshire pudding, and the cultural significance of the meal. It's lovely to hear about your exploration of Christmas traditions and the joy and nostalgia they bring.

I love this conversation and YES Laura you should be proud of yourself 💪 I didn't know people would do like a rehearsal but for cooking but it's a good idea to do so just a week in advance 👍 I love parsnips. And you didn't mention them cuz you must hate them but I also love Brussel sprouts, cooked by my husband, fried in a pan with a lot of salty butter and a bit of white wine 👌We ALWAYS have a starter in France for the Christmas dinner and very often two or three starters 😂

Laura, the reason you chose Gandhi to live with cracked me up! I like the casual conversation, vibe and food in the video. I wish I could eat the feast one day. Besides, I felt so moved that Bez kept saying thanks for the meals that Laura made. The way he appreciated her efforts kind of touching me. BTW, would you please consider to make boxing day or New Year Eve videos as well?

Wine can only be called Champagne if it comes from the region of Champagne, France, whereas Prosecco is a sparkling wine mostly made in the Veneto region, Italy. Therefore, the simple difference is Champagne growers consider Champagne a “wine of place” that cannot be reproduced anywhere else in the world. However, the method by which each wine is made differs significantly. The Charmat method used for Prosecco involves single fermentation in tank, flowed by a pressurised bottling. By contrast, Champagne is fermented twice with the secondary fermentation conducted in bottle with the addition of yeast and solids that provide the bubbles

The difference between Prosecco and Champagne is that Champagne is literally sparkling wine from Champagne, France. Anything else is not Champagne. Only sparkling wine from Champagne can be called Champagne.

Thanks for this listening practice. I found it really useful! And sth else: keep schtum? Really? I didn't know this idiom before. "stumm" (same pronunciation) is a German word (for "mute" among other things)

Prosecco is from Italy (not necessarily worse or cheaper) whereas champagne is French and it can only come from the region of Champagne-Ardenne if they want to label it like that.

I hope you don't mind if I leave 2 comments. First I want to say that I am an American watching your channel so I can learn the standard English accent. I'm basically learning to sound like you, Laura. How creepy is that? *Giggles* Okay anyway, I also want to know in Smashing English are you using Smashing like an adjective, to mean excellent or great, or are you using it as a verb, to mean really attacking English hard and getting it right?

I've spent 6 years in Norway and I find that British Xmas food has much in common with the Nordic tradition. They usually have roasted pork(ribbe) or dried sheep ribs(pinnekjot) for the Christmas meal with some sidedish of boiled veggies. To me, coming from Russia, this looks and tastes too basic for such a big holiday. I used to feel akward at Xmas meals in Norway, because I was not enjoying this type of food in the slightest. Having said that, Norway is a great country in all other regards.

Thanks to King Henry VIII, Brits do eat turkey at Christmas. But in my humble opinion, it is more of an American tradition. The turkey is native to our country & an integral part of our unique culture. We usually let our cranberry sauce come to room temperature and serve the turkey up to an hour after removing it from oven, lest the juices run out. That’s how we do, just sayin’. lol
