When John killed Rosemary in the comic, I closed the book and sat in depressed silence for like an hour. I had never expected to be traumatized by a comic, that was my first time. I’m glad I had that experience as it was very valuable but I was relieved when the show didn’t do that.

Oh yess!! I will never forget that white panel contrasted against the rest of the page. Neil got us all - that's for sure!

This character was created in a time where supervillains didn’t need a motive they were just evil, he didn’t even have a name in the original Justice League comics. Neil Gaiman wanted to show what would happen if there were no superheroes around to stop someone like that

I haven't read the comic, but John being more human and also more humanized (with "admirable goals", at least on the surface) actually seems much more horrific to me because it shows that anybody with enough power can give in to extremism.

I prefer the portray of John in the screen, loved the episode overall specially the creepiness and how everything was developing. After that, the confrontation with Dream felt a little bit short Fantastic video again!

Yes! Reminds me of the difference between book and show Tyrion. The choice to make the character normal if disheveled looking instead of an abject monster has a vastly different effect on the audience. It's a more effective choice to make them more human and relatable. That way the horror impacts harder. It's more uncomfortable and therefore significant to be left in a Grey world over the black and white comic world of evil and good.

This episode was simultaneously less horrifying than the comic yet more terrifying. It was really a joy to watch and David Thewlis may be handsome but he portrayed John’s internal ugliness so damn well. I never thought Dream was the main character in this story. He’s more the natural consequence of what John has done.

So the show caused more fear than the comic, whilst causing less fear than the comic.

Just a lil side note - they might have cut the return to the mental hospital short cause the guy who greats him is Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow (Batman's villain) and they didn't have copyrights for him. Anyway, love these videos and think they will be truly helpful to anyone who wants to do a bit of exploring in the Sandman universe (both the comics and/or tv series).
@HeadsAndTales
@HeadsAndTales Год назад
You are absolutely right! In the previous two episodes, I covered why the tv show cut ties with the wider DC universe and why it also makes more sense so didn't want to get into it again. But thanks for clarifying for everyone who is reading, once again. And thank you for your kind words about the video!

Dream and Batman take a ride in the batmobile, Dream tells Batman who he is and his story,then Batman tells him he's looking for John Dee,he knows Dee escaped Arkham and he remembers him as Doctor Destiny. Later, they arrive at "24 Hours" restaurant and they find people dead to their shock. John Dee appears,he recognizes Batman and he's surprised that Bats remembers him. I think after this episode it all went downhill, I really disliked the vortex ark and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. The actress who portraited Rose Walker looked like an amateur at times and she's certainly not the only one to blame.
@HeadsAndTales
@HeadsAndTales Год назад
I agree. The Rose Walker actress did a poor job.
@smarti1144
@smarti1144 Год назад
Yeah she wasn't the greatest but her lines and direction were not top tier either. At the end of the day I've seen much worse but the bashing of the actress seems extreme that I've seen on other places (reddit, etc) but she was not the most believable. For me, her speaking affectation was just not very good. Why didn't they just let her be British? I mean kid actors are normally hit or miss but the Jed actor was better than her.
@ergodeus
@ergodeus Год назад
@@smarti1144 I didn't know she was british, that may explain so inorganic behaviour. But I feel the exact same way, the director could have done something, maybe they ran into time/budget constraints(?) Hopefully next season will get the attention to detail the story deserves.
@smarti1144
@smarti1144 Год назад
@@ergodeus yes. There was this generic American accent that made me look it up. I also think something about the dream vortex storyline was unclear and unsatisfying. The character also wasn’t given a lot of personality. I look forward to season two.
@ergodeus
@ergodeus Год назад
@@smarti1144 that's true, I didn't understand how the Corinthian knew more about the vortex and her influence on the world than Morpheus himself. Felt like pure luck and a bit goofy... But I rewatched the show recently and I gotta say the rest of it is amazing. It's a shame to have it stained, it makes it hard for me to recommend it to anyone even tho I'm a huge fan of the comics and of Neil Gaiman.

I'd suggest that you give a try watching the fan made video 24/7 Diner , it precedes the Netflix series by 5 years and it is an almost perfect adaptation of the original story. I would like to watch a video by you on that fan made video. Thanks

@Leonardo_No_Cardio
@Leonardo_No_Cardio Год назад
@@HeadsAndTales even better , you could make a video that compares the two interpretations , the fan made (which is closer to the original) and netflix made. What I didn't like about Netflix's take on John Dee (although there were many things I liked about the way he was written for Netflix) it was that , although they tried to make him eeering to the i-try-to-be-good moral side of things, in the end again the diner ended in a bloodbath which was not connecting to the Netflix John Dee. What I mean to express and maybe I do not express it correctly is that we had two different John Does in the Netflix Sandman. One was the John Doe written by Netflix up to the point he entered the diner. And then we just , after he sat down to the diner , starting to get the John Doe from the comic, at least a 70% of him ( after all, in Netflix he was not worshipped as a god or snacking on any fingers - it couldn't click so it fine they left out the rest 30% of comic book "horror" side of john doe".... Also the battle between Morpheus & Doctor Destiny was directed in a kind of a cliché way by Netflix. Oh that and hiding Judie's tits instead of flashing them brazenly like in the comic, for me was a "miss". Nevermind, thank you for reading this. Keep on the good work.

If your force the truth, your not really getting the truth. It's not something you can force in reality. I love this concept but when I really think about it he's not really interested in the whole truth. Just exposing people. Forcefulness is never truthful. It's such a lovely Paradox

I like this version better no matter what purists might say. It improved a lot from the comics and we all have to thank it didnt fall on HbOs lap otherwise it would have been nonstop gore. Wanna bitch bout it not been a faithfull adaptation? So complain bout the cliche of pairing a Chinese with a PoC and the stereotype of her being successfull and him being the trophy. Purists and Puritans be damned!! This series is one of the besta adaptations ever and coming from NetFlix that speaks Volumes. Enough said! Period!

This episode was so damn well adapted i barely missed the orgy part like say in the boys Herogasm. It was so damn good it reminded me of opening episode of New Twilight Zone series opening episode: Night Crawlers wich was also used in one of DConstantine comics about another VietNam veterans nightmares coming true. Top notch. A rarety for NetFlix indeed.

That dîner sex scene was very base. I don't know if it was a result of their truth but something about it was just off. Reminded me of sens8. Overall that episode was entertaining but the framing of their actions as their truth kind of muddled for me.

When I was 13, I got Sandman comics as a Christmas present from my deceased mother, and I found it's charm in the way it was philosophical, the way it mixed horror and mythology. Sadly, Netlix adaptation was trash, and when there was a good episode (A dream of a thousand cats), it wasn't as deep as the original.
@theparadoxicaltouristtrave9320
I found the middle act of this episode disjointed (the violence and reveals didn't seem natural, but more like a stop the train had to make despite nobody getting off or on there) rather than being one of the best, was one of the weakest of the series. However, the portrayals of Beth and John were masterful and the highlights of that episode.
