What struck me about that story is that the Netflix CEO told his staff that they could take as much time off as they wanted, providing they presented results. When I was working at large companies, I'd do the work but also train myself in what they had to offer at my expense: that's a huge advantage from working at a large company like say Netflix.

Well not all companies can afford 500k annual salary sillicon valley developers. I am from a fairly large German company and our max budget is 100k for a software developer role

500k is TC, so most of it is probably from stock and such

Not sure if they are really the best, the search engine of Netflix is the worst thing I've never seen.

I was just about to say something similar. "such a poor search implementation in my undergraduate project would only obtain a C grade"

@@srinivaschillara4023 i doubt your undergrad project has to comb through as much data as netflix search does. be humble

The culture is changing though. I have a few friends that have worked there for over 10 years now. Many people are quietly leaving. For better or worse, they are transitioning from a tech company to a media company, and it shows.

Because it is really not a tech company. It is a video rental company that does not use physical stores, that's it. Besides, software at Netflix is overrated. The core engineering skills are in the hardware infrastructure. The software could be developed and maintained by a single guy if you ask me.
