thats a valid issue to take with it. fakeouts are wack - although i dont take as much issue with this due to how important it is for the other characters' development
The fall clearly did effect Cole long-term, his big fear in the Ice Chapter is A, falling again with the land bounty, and B, his friends abandoning him, something we see from day of the departed and presumably something he thought of during season 10 as well
I feel like the fakeout death could've been somewhat salvaged if they brought back Cole's ghostly powers. Seriously that's the only logical explanation. My man fell down like 50 feet and doesn't have a scratch. But now, this time spice it up a bit by him switch on and off ghost mode whether on command or in dire life or death situations where it just happens instinctively. I think to apply his new power to the context of succeeding seasons the latter would be appropriate
That scene with Lloyd yelling at garmadon is one of my favourite in the entire show because it shows how much Lloyd has grown, from a bratty kid who wants to be his father into someone who has accepted the evil in his father and willing to stand up to him, I also chuckle every time I see it cause I just know that scene would not have had a big of an impact (like most of the trilogy) if Sam Vincent didn't voice Lloyd
something i like abt MotO is how it’s a representation of humanity/sentimentality vs people with neither of these traits. through the ninja’s side of the story, we see what it’s like for them to be human and care about each other, while people like the Omega and Garmadon can’t understand this. only through the events after Cole’s fall can Garmadon start to learn that too
The whole vibe of S10 is creating despair,a state where the ninja could do nothing to stop the Oni and keep on losing more and more to them. Cole's fall contributes in building that despair vibe (just look at what it did to Nya,poor girl). Some could say it pushes that despair feel the deepest. When video on Crusty1566
The issue here I think is: that’s great for Lloyd and Garmadon, but Cole is just completely given the short end of the stick. I really think they could have done something for Cole there, and the fact he doesn’t change at all from that event is a great example of how not to do character writing. It’s the kind of fake out deaths I hate; because I LOVE fake out deaths. I love the ones that make you forget for a moment that there’s no way that character could die because it’s a kid show and they’re a main character. But I like those scenes because they have CONSEQUENCES. They dramatically change the character who almost *died* and the characters who had to watch. MoTO does second half, but completely ignores the first, and you need to have them both or else it feels like you just don’t care about some of your own main characters.
Coles fall made my heart fall into my foot. I knew he was probably going to be okay but it had an impact nonetheless and it was interesting to watch the characters reaction to it. It might not have developed Cole but it developed some of the others, so I’m okay with it.
BAh! I just wished the 'oni season' was longer. 4 episodes wasn't enough. We could've learned more about Cole traveling through the darkness, seeing the characters literally go through their days (or hours) thinking about Cole and mourning him while also fighting. Maybe some even feel guilt still about what they said to him last or what they did to him in life and could've had a small "air" funeral before continuing on... could've had some serious emotional moments.
wdym it didn't age well? the scene itself is good, more like it didn't end up paying off since Cole just comes back next episode unscathed. don't think the disappointment of that has anything to do with anything that happened in following years.
After thinking for a while, Zane's Crystalized fakeout is the worst fakeout. Before Lloyd's fakeout in MotO used to be the worst but atleast it has some purpose instead of cheap drama About Cole's fall, it works well for Lloyd and Garmadon's relationship even if the the actual fall had no impact on Cole's character.
My problem with Cole's death is that they never explain how come the fog doesn't effect him. My head canon is that one of his very very distant ancestors was an Oni, making Cole something like part 0.0000000001 Oni.
it did affect him. cole just barely made it into the earth driller before the cloud petrified him, which took an incredible amount of resilience on his part.
I would have loved for them to expand on Cole's side of the fall, maybe him actually getting hurt, and show how having been left for dead by his friends affected him, rather than showing him to be ok so soon after the fall. (I mean not only was that one heck of a fall, he crashed through glass if memory serves right (ouch?). And according to Garmadon the oni cloud could KILL Lloyd because of his oni blood being too thin... yet Cole didn't suffert much consequences from going through the cloud, lightheaded and a coughing fit and two seconds after entering his car he was right as rain). But I guess with only four episodes in the season, they trimmed things up a bit and did what they always do : shaft Cole. (and then Master of the Mountain happened. So satisfying.) Though if they had killed him off for real I would have been absolutely heartbroken. 😂
@@alexmc973what they mean is that in their opinion Coles fake death would've been better if they didn't confirm he was alive one episode after the scene, and that it would've been better if they rather waited a bit longer, like one season to confirm he's alive
my principal problem was that cole can fly with the airjitsu or use his elemental dragon but just fall is a bit dissaponting of how forget things of oldest things
Here's a interesting thing that can somewhat fix Cole's death. This actually leaves a hole that if filled correctly the death doesn't have to be meaningless. If a story is created that Cole actually died, because no living creature should survive a back flop trough a glass window on to concrete like that. But instead he was send to another dimension, or perhaps the departed realm to regain his life again on a mission and probably learn even more about his mom and perhaps explaining how he recognized his mom's amulet in the master of the mountain, because in all seasons, that's where that amulet was 1st introduced and there is no way Cole saw a similar item and "oh that's my mum's!" So yeah consider this a little fan theory.
My problem with it is that the price to be paid for Garmadon and Lloyd's arc is just too high. I hate fakeout deaths as much as the next guy, and it really could have been done better. Yeah, the moment was well done, but it could have just been replaced with Cole almost falling, the ninja helping him get back up, Garmadon ushering them to go and yelling at them for not thinking in terms of survival, then Lloyd getting mad at him. It would've done the exact same thing, without undermining the stakes of the story.
My biggest problem with the Oni in season 10 is that they were built to be this all powerful enemy and season nine and I just don’t think they showed it. As in I wanted to see the ninja be out matched like with Ninjago crystallized. I’m one of the few who actually liked Ninjago crystallized overall, although I can understand your complaints about it.
Look @Crusty783 I appreciate you as a content creator and your commentary on the series as a fan but I gotta disagree here. Cole's fake death was pointless for a plethora of reasons besides the ones we already know. 1.) We already had an instance of this in DOTD, Cole put his life on the line to restore Yang and his students to the living world. But barely surviving it leaving a scar on his face, even tho we know he lives this is important because it shows no matter at what cost Cole is willing to put others before himself even in the face of death. 2.) That scene could've happened in a different scenario that would make the conversation between Lloyd and Garmadon actually more meaningful, such as Lloyd going after Cole, the Oni overpowering the ninja or such. Not only does Cole surviving and returning kinda prove Garmadon's point in a sick way, but it doesn't do much justice for anyone since it was done poorly. 3.) It wasn't necessary, if Cole were to die. It should've been in Possession, where Cole gives up his life to stop the ghost army from destroying The City Of Sticks and make the reflection more accurate. The fact that it hasn't happened plus both scenes do nothing for the character just shows Ninjago isn't very good with shock value and character progression. Your good Crusty , I just didn't agree with this one.
I really love almost everything that comes out of it, but the fall itself just feels incredibly manipulative to me - especially considering how long the episode takes before showing us that he's fine. And what makes it even worse is the fact that there's *another* (very well executed) ninja fake out death the very next episode.
Cole's Fall as a scene on its own without context is in my opinion Ninjago's saddest scene and a Top 5 Ninjago scene, it shows how mature the writer's and how much better March of the Oni could've been with a longer time. The Soundtrack and The Ninja's different reactions and also I didn't follow Ninjago like I did for the Wildbrain Era so I believed that could genuinely be the end for Cole as I thought March of the Oni was to be the last season. However, with context just being a fake out death, rushing Cole's arc with no huge revelation or without anything substantial does drag it down a lot.
Nah nya death was so good tbh i was happy when she came back even do her sacrifice but you know the writers loves us so they had to get them back for the best finale season ever
@@xguy2950 Nya's death was OK, I mean it did retread a lot from Zane's sacrifice so that knocks it down for me. Also I think Crystalized is the one of the most disappointing finale seasons ever, Nya's arc being a major reason.
Whenever ninjago implies that a character is dying but is coming back.... they need to keep that character out of the show for a few episodes instead of showing them alive the next episode
The reason I didn’t like this scene is because one day, @ninja_whip said that in this season, "one ninja will die", and I felt a little bit deceived when it turned out it was a fakeout death all along.
@@Crusty783 okay. Back then I was much more naïve and I believed rumors easier. Plus I don’t like fakeout deaths because of how often they happen and because most of the time they barely have any consequences, making them less impactful.
If only onies can surive the cloud and everyone else turn to statues, Cole shouldnt have surived unless he is part oni, it could also be a plothole beacuse there is another big one, if anyone possess all four golden weapons they get eliminated, but in this season Kai, Wu and Lloyd touches it with no problem. so either Cole is part oni, Kai, Wu and Lloyd are imortal, or this season just has a lot of plot holes and dramatic music, but i still think Cole is part oni tho.
@@Crusty783 That’s interesting they don’t fool me. I really know the characters are gonna be fine I mean that’s kind of interesting but OK I guess I mean I would call them supposed deaths I guess but I don’t care. I guess it just is what it is I guess.
Technically the prophecy in season 5 was wrong and right Cole the character himself is alive but his voice actor that made that character amazing did die
And then there's Zane's countless fake-out deaths. The first one in season 3 was excellent. Pretty much no complaints other than it didn't make much sense with the season 2 ending. Crystalized kinda fixed it. And of course, the worst fake-out death was in Crystalized, where the characters basically said "Yup, he's 100% dead" Then Pixal just said some love stuff and boom, Zane's alive again. There wasn't really even any tension. It was a short moment.
