@@Mooskittl If you can accept you are working with a piece of gear designed for notably lower headroom and spl than what we use today.. sure why not? I was hired to produce and engineer an album from scratch after telling a band we could easily achieve an early sub pop grunge sound if they wanted the sound of that era with a few exceptions, we mostly just used a sans amp NYC and the Ramsa with effects (and parallel amping with a Boss Katana for high end ) to get the guitars right, the drums - just the Ramsa WR24 preamps since drums are loud enough to not have to push the pre amps much, the bass was loud enough too and wasn’t too processed. The other instruments like acoustic guitar and vocals I used a Daking mic pre just so I could boost my gain there and not the Ramsa, which I push to overdrive on rare occasions but usually on a parallel track or less so for the saturation it provides which is a great “limiter” just to pass drums through for a sound that is clearly of the era but not at all the sound of a sampler . I can’t find the article these days, but I read on gear slutz the engineer who designed the Ramsa boards was an in-house recording and mixing engineer for Motown who preferred those RCA consoles they used earlier on for artists in the 60s. He recreated a lot of both the design and supposedly transformer and pre amp sound with the analog Ramsa boards. Ramsas were amazing quality back in the day. Kind of goes to show how much Panasonic cared and REALLY inspected their gear where they were made at Matsushita. You won’t get Grammies with it but you will have a proper engineer experience and people WILL recognize the sounds assuming bands use physical or even vintage gear and maybe you can find an affordable one unlike many other brands. The secret gear list of old school bands from Nirvana to Eric Johnson to Pepper shows they all used analog Ramsas too

True! One of my dream series that MAYBE we could do one day is inviting stars in to record on "my first producers" rigs, like the Scarlett beginner pack, just to show how great someone can sound even on that affordable of equipment. Maybe one day :) and thanks glad you're enjoying the new stuff!

@@AudioHaze I'd like to suggest a target for a professional musician or producer who might be willing to come on and talk about some of this stuff: Andy Partridge of XTC. He seems generally willing to do interviews with people who are interested in the band's music, and I've seen him interviewed on several channels and podcasts that aren't that widely-known. And while he didn't produce XTC's records, he has done production himself for other artists and would be able to speak knowledgeably on what the band did, especially in their early days. He's also done some stuff that's "lo-fi" in ways that would be unexpected; the band's later album "Apple Venus", for example, was partly recorded in Abbey Road studios while also being partly recorded in a literal garage.

Oh it totally can damage guitar amps! It’ll still do it, but it’s not great for the speakers, especially over long periods. Bigger speakers have a bit better time dealing with it though
