technically roy halladay also has two no-hitters (thrown in the same season), but one of those was in the postseason. that 2010 season was unreal to watch as a kid.

What makes his 7th no-hitter all the more impressive is that, according to Tom House, Nolan had a terrible pre-game bullpen. He had a sore knee and his back hurt. Tom House was worried they might have to get someone up VERY early, because, to paraphrase Tom House, "Nolan doesn't have it today." Anyway, after one of the early innings where he's been dominating (the story is fuzzy as to whether it's after the 1st or second, AFAIK), he sits down next to Tom House, and Tom House asks him, "Nolan, what's going on?" and Nolan replies something like, "I don't know. but this is one of them there days." Then Nolan looks down the dugout and says, "Boys, just get me one. It's all I'm going to need today." The rest, as they say, is history.

Some of the best games ever pitched had stories of awful bullpen sessions before the game (Kerry Wood's 20K game). Thank you for sharing that!

@snerdterguson
@snerdterguson Год назад
Maybe its just me, but if you don't complete the game, its not a no hitter. At least not on an individual level. Still impressive, but not the same as going 9+ no hit innings.
@BaseballAF
@BaseballAF Год назад
I agree with your sentiment, but in a way, it's more impressive that multiple pitchers can keep a team from hitting, as there are so many more variables with each new pitcher.
@snerdterguson
@snerdterguson Год назад
@@BaseballAF that’s a team effort. Realistically, are you overly impressed when a bullpen throws 2 or 3 hitless innings? Or when a starter goes 6 without giving up a hit? Because that’s what the combined no no is. While the other is a single pitcher dominating for at least 9. Don’t get me wrong, team no hitters are cool, just not as cool, or to me as impressive, as a solo effort. Though context can alter that. A guy who goes 9 with no hits but walks a ton and gets very few Ks isn’t as impressive as a team effort with 10+ Ks and few walks. In the case of Ryan’s 7th, I can’t imagine any team no no is on that level of dominance. Loved the vid btw, been a Nolan fan since I knew what baseball was even though he was never on my Yankees. He’s my favorite player ever.
@BaseballAF

He did throw three, but one of them, he allowed a run in that game. So he had two "real" no-hitters. I should have maybe put that as a note, for no-hitter shutouts. Good catch though
