Who takes their shoes off indoors, and how does Mads feel about saunas? We tested director Jonas Åkerlund and Mads Mikkelsen’s Nordic-ness in a game of How Nordic Are You? #MadsMikkelsen #JonasÅkerlund #Polar #Netflix
kaouter Mouslim haliba yup, pretty much all of the nordic countries drink a lot of coffee..I’m from Iceland and everyone I know drinks at least 2 cups of coffee per day minimum.
@@rambololal I always thought that they were more into tea. Don't ask me why. I lived in France and it was about both tea and coffee. And in the UK it is all about tea. Interesting to know .
I love when interviews find that weirdly strong stance someone has about an obscure topic. Mads just seemed to be very anti sauna which I find amusing.
Finally, another Scandinavian who hates saunas! I was always bullied for not going to the sauna, but why just sit in a hot room and be semi-sweaty? No thanks.
That Eurasian mix gives him a great looking tan. You get those Scandinavians that have Asiatic mix and they just look stunning with dark features and blue grey eyes.
@@8kigana no he doesn't. I saw this interview in a French channel where he went to promote this film where he is totally isolated and has to survive on his own(don't remember the title of the movie) and he wasn't able to speak he even told them the few sentences he was able to say in French. He had the tipical background voice translating for him.
Well danish as a spoken language is harder to understand, but as a written language it's almost identical to Norwegian. And Swedish sounds more like Norwegian than Danish does because we don't have that throat sound.
Nobody understands finnish😂 I am finnish and I understand them all because we have to learn swedish in finland (our second national language) you can't even have a bachelors or masters degree unless you speak and write pretty fluent swedish. Love it though! I wish our language was more connected to other nordics
@@abcde_ghijklmnopqrstuvwyxz2188 What do you mean? Are you Danish or Norwegian? I am Norwegian and the written language of Danish and Norwegian is so much alike.
We don't always do, but it's considered rude to ask someone say something over and over again in the north so we fake it alot. As a swede Norwegians are easy to understand like 95% but danes a hard af. Finland and island have a completely other language though, so with them we don't even try.
@@luru1544 yeah, Finnish is odd. It's not a norse language. It belongs to the Uralic languages. Like Hungarian and Estonian. So makes sense that It's not mutually understandable with Norse languages.
I laughed when the scores got halved when they said they didn’t drink coffee. My mom and her family are from Finland and are always drinking coffee. All day long.
They said they never drink coffee, hence it went down.......everyone in Scandinavia drinks coffee, well a lot of people do, and it is properly strong coffee....
Whoever named this video knows what they’re doing. Thank you for writing “Nordic” and not “Scandinavian”, especially when talking about sauna, which is Finnish. 👏🏻
@The Collector Finland (not by that name though) existed much before Swedes finally got enough guts and force to conquer then ununified Finland. According to Sagas, Sweden and most of Norway were at ancient times under rule of Finnish kings. The sauna is an older invention than the relative modern times under Swedish rule. I mean saunas existed even way before Vikings came here to die.
@The Collector Before sweden took over finland we had our own military, culture religion and all. Saunas have been in finland for over 6000 years. Besides, the finnish people always were there, so why does it matter? None of this does. Did i take this personally? Yes. :D
I'm a Swede and that beginning where Jonas is talking about how much he loves Danish pølse is just so sweet. It's like seeing these stars I know suddenly turn into everyday people.
@@hd-xc2lz That's because you're only really supposed to sit in the sauna for a few minutes to warm yourself up, go outside, jump in the snow and roll around(you could also use a cold shower/bath if no snow is available), then go back in and warm yourself up again. You're not really meant to just sit in there for an hour at a time.
@@wazza123ification Fair enough, but such an experience as you describe is largely unavailable here in the U.S.. And too bad! I quite like the idea of a snow roll-about.
I feel him. I'm from Russia and we have smth similar (banya or however they spell it in English) and it's so traditional so even one of the most famous movie story started from it. And I just can't. It's too hot and etc for me
So why the hell isn't Mads Mikkelsen playing The Witcher for Netflix?? He looks like Geralt, he sounds like Geralt, he has the attitude and more. This is really beyond confusing lol
@@ZammyO He has a better feel to be Geralt than Henry Cavall does by miles, but ok. lol. Mads would fit the role much better and damn near everyone has said it lol. Not sure what you are looking at tbh. Can't fault some people for not having an "eye" for these things, but your opinion is dully noted and cataloged with the rest. Just sayin.
Mads is a diamond in the rough. When he first hit the scene he wasn’t much more than a supporting actor. But some saw his potential, thankfully, and gave him the opportunities to graduate to the A-list. How many actors can carry a movie on their shoulders without speaking a single word like Mads did in Valhalla Rising? Very few, if any.

"There's no bad weather, only bad clothing." Love that! It speaks to me of accepting the reality of weather and of being prepared and facing challenges. But maybe it speaks to blaming or other things.
It just means that we don't always have the best weather here, but we like being out in nature and so if we wear the right clothes for the weather will be going out into, then we will be fine and we will have a good time.
Huh, I never thought if it like that. We don't really use it as a deeper meaning than, yeah the weather is shit, but stop making excuses and get your ass out on a hike
@@michaelhenriksen7359 Valhalla Rising and Age of Uprising:The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas are 2 of my favorite Mads movies. Hannibal really showed how much commitment he had to a role though, he filled filled that role rather well.
@growlingbehemoth child, hush. The brown water keeps the headaches away. And it calms the dark nordic demons from the untamed wilderness which you fight every morning. (Coffee is not a beverage, its antipsychotic medication for vikings :p)
@growlingbehemoth Brown liquid, thou be disgusting but you satiate the evil spirits. O, may you always be flowing (even if actual coffee is much better). Hey man, at least it isn't that not-even-brown-liquid bullshit the Americans call coffee. Shit's too week to medicate as well as being foul.
@growlingbehemoth It's a real shame we don't grind our own beans more. I started doing it and it's just that 10-20% better than the pregrinded swill most serve.
If it's true it's honestly really impressive 😂 Coffee is literally everywhere, even if you don't like it or drink it normally it'd be extremely unlikely for someone to never have had a single cup
@@Hellsing375"unlikely for someone to never have had a single cup" Danish, 37, never had a single cup of coffee.... its just not my thing... But i do Love the smell of a freshly opened bag of coffee xD
Dexter Morgan. I have this horrible imagery that I cannot get out of my head of being the one going to the exact spot in that sauna where Akerlund sat his naked butt.

I work in UK/Europe region from India.I talked with Nordic people all the time due to client requirements and to be very honest they are very polite and respectful.
I saw Mads in Valhalla Rising and was really impressed with his physical acting. That was a difficult role to play regardless of what it looks like. He's quickly become one of my favorite living actors.
yo, so I saw your comment, and I saw you signed off with Mvh, but like do they use that outside of Nordic countries. and what does it mean in Finnish? bc in danish its an acronym for "med venlig hilsen"
@@punky.prince Maybe she's a Swedish speaking Finn? Mvh as a letter combination means nothing in Finnish and is not used in my area but it might be used in the more Swedish speaking areas. I actually just thought she made a typo, good to know that mvh has a meaning.
omega1231 it depends. Ethnicly Finnish People are different. The Finnish language is its own language, not related to scandinavian languages (althought there are swedish speaking Finns and loanwords from modern and ancient scandinavian languages). geographicly Finland is located atleast partially in the Skandinavian peninsula (iceland, denmark, färöe islands etc are not located in scandinavia, but are referred to as scandinavian). Finland at the same time isnt scandinavian and is scandinavian, depends on the way you look at things...
If you sip 'snaps' in one go or two depends on the situation. If you're with your family - one go, or you will get judged! If' you're with friends... One go. Love from Denmark.
Also depends on the snaps. A standard Rød Aalborg I'd down in one go no matter the place, but a nice homemade snaps made by a family member or friend, I'd sip and taste a little more.
As a dane i feel bad for all the people who hasn't seen Mads Mikkelsen in a danish movie called "Blinkende Lygter" one the best movies ever made in Denmark. He is by far Denmarks best actor.
Everyone saying Mads looks gorgeous until they see him play Svend Sved (Sven Sweat) in "De Grønne Slagtere". That movie and Blinkende Lygter are such treasures.
Blinkende Lygter is such a Danish thing. We may say a classic.. I've seen it, Im not even Dane. Yes Mads and his accomplices are there all present and correct.
Mad Mikkelsen is one of my all time favourite actors. I don't pay attention to celebrities/actors/artists to know them by name other than the mainstream most obvious but he has always stood out to me.
Having seen Mads Mikkelsen's danish movies, where he plays often a very odd person (talking about amongst other things, Adams Apples and the Green Butcher), I would like to see him play Don Quixote in a movie based on the book. It seems to go pretty well in line with his other slew of odd/quirky characters.
I can't wait for a international movie with Mads Mikkelsen, where he's like you say, an odd person.. I just don't think, it will ever be like in his danish movies, where he always delivers and is never boring. I did like him in Casino Royal, but that's because he was sweating like "Svend sved" (Svend sweat)
Never will forgive Netflix for not castings Mads in the Witcher series, even the voice is perfect. Cavill body look like's preparing for Mr. Olympia, not Geralt of Rivia.
Yes. I think that many parts of the world they don't take their shoes off before going inside. But at least in Finland it's considered rude or bad behavior not to take them off.
I don't get that in American movies. They have their outside shoes indoors? That's some nasty shit. "Hey I just stepped in some mud, better bring it home"
@@dscmtr686 Because while their both Nordic their from different Nordic countries. While similar they got some differences. Can only guess out of context here but seems like it's common to have shoes on indoors in Denmark. While in Sweden people would think your mad if you tried to keep them on.
Mads mikkelsen is in my top 10 fav actors. He has such great charisma and elegance which is a very rare attribute most ppl don't have. He is a great actor. Loved him as Hannibal. He should have played geralt, not hanry.
I’m northern English and have visited most Nordic countries and have always found the folk there to be freakishly nice people. Extremely welcoming and pleasant.
Mads seems to be more than a genuine guy; I like his way of thinking. He´s such a great actor too. Thank you for the upload! I don´t like sauna either...

@the horrible story. Hahahaha, that's because you haven't seen him younger. He was stunning. The cheekbones, the eyes, mouth, nose, face, body (he was a dancer and gymnast). Did I miss anything?...
The "only bad clothing" thing was such a big culture shock from the north/northwest US, I've known people to wear basketball shorts a good 20 or 30 degrees C below when Scandinavians put on a coat. My home state's weather policy is more along the lines of "gaslight yourself into believing it isn't cold at all" lol
I'm from PA and definitely would just wear a hoodie in minus weather. Back in high school some kids would wear shorts when it was snowing. Now I live in Japan and I look at the Japanese like they are aliens for wearing winter jackets in 15 ℃ weather and they look at me the same wearing a t-shirt lol
They have this saying in Norwegian too. And if you live in Bergen, where it rains like most of the time it's so true. Kids would never play outside if it weren't for raingear. People are conditioned to work, and play in all types of weather in Norway.
Going to the sauna isn't necessarly Nordic, I as a Swede think more of it to Finland and certain parts of Sweden and Norway. But it's weird that they don't drink coffee, either of them!
But Finland is a Nordic country so sauna is also a Nordic thing. When you're saying "isn't necessarily Nordic", you're probably meaning "Scandinavian" which Finland isn't part of.
@@Fortzon Hmm.. I would think that what OP means is that it's not generally Nordic. Uh, it is of course still Nordic, because Finland is Nordic but it's not, perhaps, a standard to meassure Nordic-ness against..? Kind of like, uh, say, Surströmning, which is a very Swedish thing.
