DR greger let me begin by saying that I truly have no words to thank you.I am a physician and I have been following you for several years and what an incredible difference u have made in my life, my patients ,friends n family.I volunteer for a non profit around the world and I have shared this info with other DR's around the world . they too have started using WPBF as mainstay treatment for all patients with excellent results. with great love and respect 🙏
I just preordered the book. It just occurred to me that if I had preordered it a long time ago, I might have been able to buy it for a cheaper price. Oh well. I'm super excited about it! Already I've learned new things from this video.
I'm 26 and an ER nurse. I read "How not to Die" two years ago. I went slow into it and am now fully into whole foods, plant based veganism. I cannot even begin to list all the ways your teachings and resources have changed my life. Truly, thank you!! I tell all my patients about your books. Every single patient and their families. Every day.
You're my hero. I can't tell you how many doctors, PAs, NPs, dieticians and nurses who argued with me when I mentioned being WFPB. You're saving lives beyond what you do in the ER. Bless you.
I went vegan when I turned 24, now 86. At that time I did not do it for health benefits but for the sanctity of life and reading Krishnamurti. I have relished the benefits this WFPB way of life has brought. I do not wear glasses, read voraciously, sense of smell almost too good, hearing seems fine. Nature and her gift of plants, nothing else as good. Thank you Dr Greger for an entertaining and humorous talk.
Wonderful!! I am 39 and just went vegan after reading Greger, I've wanted to since I was in 5th grade but my Dad (poor guy just loves meat too much, hates fruit and veg) wouldn't allow it. I wish I'd started sooner. Now he's got an enlarged aorta and needs surgery, I've been trying to get him to come around
I have put this to the test for almost seven years, I am 66 and take no medicines, I wake up with energy everyday, I still eat and drink things I shouldn't but I keep trying to be better. Thank you to Dr Greger who helped me transition to plant based and his continuing to produce content helps me to try to be better..... and his sense of silly humor always brightens my day. Thank you Doc!!!!!!
Good on you bro!! Thanks for sharing, I love hearing these kinds of stories because my parents are getting older and are both sick, I really believe they can get better if they change their diets and exercise more
I went to the doctor today and got amazed by the power of this diet. My doctor said i had the blood pressure of a 20 yr old and im 53. Whole food plant diet is the answer to all our sicknesses I strongly believe now. 113/73. That was my first visit after 10 years of being on a whole food plant diet. I was prediabetic before i switched. Cant wait for the result. Thank you so much for all you do Dr Greger.
That's very true...seems to me it's a case of learning as much as you can about health, nutrition, exercise, etc. and then going with what works best for you.
Congratulations but... Many people suffer from severe inflamation on this diet. Wheat and soya are key inflamatory agents as well as many types of vegetable oil.
@@chazwyman but that doesn't makes those things bad . Whatever stuff is in those things is something body isn't breaking down probably due to genetics ,bad gut microbiome and on going chronic health issues that are obviously going to get worse as they might be irritating the gut. Hopefully someone suffering from those things seek help of good plant based doctor and even Google how others overcame those issues.
And then there are many more factors like proper nutrient intake , being active ,pesticides , staying away from refined foods . I honestly don't know how we are blaming plants only when there seems nothing wrong with them inherently and others do good on them.
My husband doesn’t read books generally. I bought him this book for xmas and even he has been compelled to gradually work his way through it, a few pages every day. What a bible of excellent imformation it is. Thank you Dr Greger👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks again for giving us this information. My 90 year old mum, who can still kick anyone’s behind in scrabble, trivia, crossword puzzles etc, read that wheatgerm was ‘healthy’ back in the 70’s. Conveniently for her, at the time my dad worked at a flour mill and brought her home fresh, oily bags of wheatgerm, so she could eat it for breakfast everyday until he retired. She still an avid coffee drinker!
Dr. Greger, you're one of my role models as a future physician! I'm doing what I can to spread the word, to my family/friends, patients I work with, colleagues, etc. Thank you for your amazing work! God bless you and your loved ones :)
Havent touched an animal product in 25 years..! Sheer bliss... All health issues vanished.. after a year switching to Vegan WFPBD ( SOS free )! So blessed that this valuable information came to me at an early age..! My wife is Vegan and both my kids raised Vegan, not to mention my daughter is school topper in 10 th grade ! 😁😁😁😍😍😍
25:01 hearing that changing to a more optimal diet at age 20 could extend someone’s lifespan that much was so inspiring! especially since i’m 19 lol. it’s sad how many of us young adults throw our health aside and i want to change that narrative, at least in a small way :)
I made the change at 16 and it is the best decision I have ever made. When I started joining some WFPB groups I realized pretty much everyone there were people over 40 wishing they had made the change earlier, wich made me feel even more certain of my decision. I'm now 22 and still have difficulties finding young adults who actually care enough about their health...it's sad to see. Happy for you!!!
This is good information. I saw two studies just over 20 years apart where they tracked the lives of centenarians in the U.S. They found that they had four things in common, and they were not diet-related. The four things are 1. A Good Attitude. 2. Do something physical every day. 3. Do Something social every day. 4. Let go of losses. All is related to #1 a good attitude. I am 65 and feel like I'm 30. Attitude makes the difference.
So agree with your 4 points. I am 69 and hike every day in the countryside. Also still work and volunteer. I garden and do yoga and pilates. I weigh 122lbs and eat one meal a day. I’ve noticed friends who hang on to anger or victimhood are always ill. I thank my lucky stars every day - we only have one life, let’s appreciate every minute.
@@sportysbusiness NO not these people. They were from all walks of life. Some had a daily shot of brandy and others had other minimal "spice of life" seemingly bad habits they held as rituals. They had active social lives. I have recovered from too many injuries doctors told me would limit my movement or strength, too many to count. A healthy mind, positive attitude, and good life habits will keep us young.
@@danieltorgerson3593 I'm not saying they never drank alcohol or even smoked. I am saying they ALL ate whole foods grown locally and seasonally. You said they didn't have diet in common, yet they did. Go back and check.
Not the studies I saw. An Alaskan commercial fisherman friend of mine just died at 104 I know his history. He died healthy and with a great attitude. Good nutrition is great but what you do with it makes the difference. Bitterness, anger defensiveness, or overindulgence in a pill or a food that will save your life is giving up a battle of consciousness you don't even know that you are in. @@sportysbusiness
I was WFPB for a little over 11 years. Then early last year I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis after having a fractured vertebrae. I didn’t fall, was not in an accident, so the only thing I can think was that I was training to become a yoga instructor and a lot of the movements are bending forward, compressing one’s spine. I was very healthy for those 11 years. During that time I went through menopause and had absolutely no symptoms or hot flashes and I attribute that to no animal protein in my diet. I have to wonder if the osteoporosis is due to not paying attention to my mineral levels. Regardless, for the last year, I have eaten meat, fish, and dairy. I am going to go back to primarily whole foods again, because I truly felt much better.
plant based diets lower bone mass. So in longterm we could unnofficially say that it causes osteoporosis. This is due to antinutrients pulling minerals out of your bones. But if you feel better on plant based it is not worth to waste life with eating meat.
@@fitbysenanutritioncoaching3943 Yep, also weight bearing exercises are important! Protein from legumes/beans/lentils, tofu/edamame, whole grains (especially quinoa/buckwheat, etc.), high protein veggies, etc. :)
Drink horsetail herb, enquire about Marodyne, which is a viration plate. However, I have no experience and have only read in a comment that three bone density increases you again.
I've been following Dr Michael Greger's work for some time and generally eat a whole food plant based diet, I will redouble my efforts after seeing this and I can't wait to get his new book "How not to age"....
I actually adopted a WFPB diet when I was 20 - yay for an extra 11 years of life! I just turned 30 and still feel like a 20 year old (no aches, pains, etc). And as a bonus my body measurements are the same as when I was 16! Clarifying edit: My non-plant based friends complained about “aches and pains and feeling old” in their 20s. I do know aging is inevitable, but your life choices have an effect!
Aches and pains come a bit later. I hit 45 and it hit me like a ton of bricks, even after 15 years of plant based eating. Health issues like neural pain and IBS as well as arthritis. Getting old can be delayed by eating WFPB, but it can't stop it unfortunately.
it's a popular dish in many countries - so everyone's reaping benefits here. As an aside - do you know of good palestinian vegan channels? I could find any, but thought I saw some.
Thank you !! You have single handedly changed my understanding of nutrition..and hence the quality of my life. Forever grateful to you and your commitment to your expertise!
Really interesting topic and information. In the sixties my mother used to give us wheat germ for breakfast with some fruit compote of apple, apricots and prunes. I wonder what she knew then. She and my father lived and died into their eighties with no evidence of alzheimers dementia., surely one of the cruelest ways to live and die.
i wonder if she read the Adele Davis books, there were health food stores that had great book racks with that author and also some others I cannot recall right now
This is by far the very best summary of all the research. This will have many doctors in California on HR defense since they keep prescribing the same scrap meds year after year. During the pandemic I listened to all the doctors quoted, I shared some blah blah studies with friends, I will share this one as my Christmas present to all next and dear.
Keen to learn your evaluation of Bryan Johnson's " Blueprint", which seems to concord with your approach well - e.g., slowing aging being the priority, plant-based diet, autophagy.
As a strict carnivour of 69, who was an obesse sick diabetic, and now usually guessed to be between 48 and 52, with all health markers optimin and very fit / atheletic, I am getting younger each year.
Dr. Greger is always so informative, passionate and I love that he’s so committed to backing all of his information with peer-reviewed studies and science. It gives you a lot of comfort that what you’re learning is not only verifiable and accurate but you can go out and read/review the resources for yourself. He says he cites the bujeezus out of all his work and in his book. I love that about him!!!
oh me too. I can't stand when someone makes a claim and then you can't look it up. I was looking at his sources - they look pretty good. It's not like the sources that someone cites that have some bad stuff in it (well he has animal studies, but am glad that he backs it up with human ones - showing the discrepancies to point out that we're not lab animals. Right on).
This man himself is a clear illustration that all he proposes - doesn't work. I consider almost all his recommendations to be BS. Never trust a person, who looks unhealthy and yet teaches on how to be healthy.
BRAVO! Dr. Greger. You are one of my favorite people and your dedication to sharing evidence based nutrition and health has helped me turn my health around and thrive, I am truly grateful!!!
DR greger I simply can't wait to start reading your book and hopefully will get to meet u on your book tour. AS a physician I see every day what conventional medicine can do and what WPBF does. ❤🙏
How do you get underweight patients to gain muscle mass or weight? The vegan doctors propose low protein and low fat diets which makes it difficult. I have been plant-based for 8 years and this is a common theme I see.
Many surpricing and very positive informations e,g, that strawberry powder might help for kneepain and it seems to be a must read in every little detail - truly inspiring and in many ways so helpfull to keep me motivated to do the very best on continue my whole food plant Based diet and learn a lot about simple yet very varied use of plants and herbs 🙏🌷❤️🙃🙏🎵🌷🎶❤️
Dr. I appreciate all the amazing things you shared and have transformed many lives. I have a question and need help. How come people from the country who are primary vegetarians for many generations are not those with the longest life expectancy, 68 years (2021)? Instead, people live in the country where they are not having as much sun light, such as Canada, is having life expectancy of 82.6 years (2021). I'm not very smart and can use your gentle help to learn. Thank you, Sir.
I listen to Drs :Berry, Chaffee, Baker, Kilts, Westman and Fung..Feel amazing. Funny how this popped up in my feed suggestions after the LMHR Study results became public yesterday. By the way, since I am in a Ketogenic state, I can easily fast longer than 24 hours. Satiety matters. Don't need to feed every 3-4 hours.
Love Dr Gregor, but he doesn't address oxalates which kept me in high blood pressure etc, until Read the Carnivor Dr's, eliminated veggies and at 79 eliminated all maladies. Interesting, right?
keto is dangerous you missing 17 essentials micro nutrients its bad for your heart, bad for your microbiome ( doi : 10.1038/nature12820), you losing muscle and bones sources : see those two videos on nutritionfacts website or RU-vid channel titled :"Are Keto Diets Safe?" and the other one "Keto Diets: Muscle Growth & Bone Density" or "low carb fraud" by T.Colin Campbell keto is like fastin but the dirty way. it's a short term thing you can't fast indefinitely. The carnivore diet is a mono diet the only benefits come from the processed foods you living out
I appreciate his passion, dedications, and empathy. He is the inspiration for me and surely for millions to live healthier and more compassionate lifestyle. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Dr. Greger. I cannot wait to dive in and devour How not to Age. :)
Dr. Greber, I am enjoying reading your’ How not to Age ‘ book as I am when I listen to your podcasts. The book is a great reference. I wish you happy holidays and another healthy and prosperous new year.
I remain confused about ideal protein intake. A 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that older adults who consumed 1.2 g/kg/day of protein had greater muscle mass and strength than those who consumed the RDA of 0.8 g/kg/day. Another study, published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2015, found that older adults who consumed 1.5 g/kg/day of protein had improved muscle function and a lower risk of sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength. Yet Dr. Greger says this will shorten your life? Help me out here.
Those studies found correlation but not causation. For example older people taking a protein supplement might be more health conscious and also do some weight lifting, thus have more muscle mass from lifting not from increased protein. Protein is not the stimulus for muscle growth, the time under tension of each muscle fiber is the stimulus. The studies Greger discusses show NO causation. Increased protein intake does not increase muscle mass and in fact increasing protein intake will decrease life expectancy. The studies were designed to see if A causes B. The studies you bring up were to see if there might be an association between A and B.
It's probably reverse causation. Ppl who exercise tend to eat more protein because they believe it's what's best for their recovery. When I went vegan and stopped worry about my protein I didn't lose muscle mass I gained some. Strength training and eating adequate calories is what builds muscle
The answer is Easy: bigger muscles isn't the same as long life. Bigger muscle comes from mTor activation which also shortens life, so it's a tradeoff. Which do you prefer, long life or muscles?
Valter Longo says it’s best to have low proteins under age 65 but after then you do need to increase it. It depends on your goals. Health span goals with fewer years but more muscle mass might be more of interest. There is a dividing choice. Valter did do a study with women where they did gain more muscle mass after his fast so it’s not as cut and dry as I think health span experts like to say as well.
I almost didn't watch because I know he is a militant vegan, but thankfully I did. He is a very good spokesperson and I think I'll even read his books. His good message might be lost because of his vegan proselytism. Thankfully I have read enough nutritional research to know that his criticism of animal foods is highly CONTEXTUAL and they can be a part of a diet that prolongs longevity. For instance, to talk about a few important points of this talk, it is known that low carb ketogenic diets can boost autophagy by themselves! Even more so if you combine it with fasting. It is known that low carb ketogenic diets can trigger the phenomenon NATRIURESIS OF FASTING, which is a good thing regarding to sodium intake in our modern context. It is also known that ketogenic diets makes fasting a lot easier! There are many other points to be made, but my point is: If you educate yourself enough, you can have most of the benefits he mentioned by following a diet containing animal products, including eggs. Or, like Stephen Phinney likes to say: A Well-Formulated Ketogenic Diet (WFKD).
Praise God as a 7th Day Adventist that love for God and keeping His commandments, the 7th Day Sabbath and the Daniel 1:8 diet is the Spirit of Christ that adds to our lives, total surrender of self and bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, is the secret to the Spirit without measure Hallelujah 🕊🍇🙌
The number one risk factor, by far, for heart disease is diabetes/insulin resistance. Excess sugar & refined carbohydrate intake increases the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, obesity, and several cancers. Many scientists even refer to Alzheimer’s as diabetes type III. Yet no mention of reducing sugar intake in this whole lecture? Americans have always eaten both meat and plants. It was the introduction of ultra processed foods and more sugar products in the late 1900s that has coincided with the epidemic of obesity and heart disease in the US.
Great video and very insightful, I think we all should know that trading comes with a lot of benefits And I have just bought my first house through it. As a beginner I was scared of loosing my savings but l'm glad I took the bold step that is now favoring me.
Yes please How does this trading stuff work? I'm really interested but I just don't know how to go about it. I heard people really make it huge trading
@@jasonstorm2118It's not as easy as you think my friend. As a beginner, it's essential for you to have a mentor to keep you accountable. I'm guided by Maymuun J Choi a widely known crypto consultant
But I strongly advise you against self trading, it's really dangerous and has brought many investors down, you need someone with the right strategies and expertise to do the work for you, I recommend Maymuun J Choi
My doctor recommended Dr. Mark Hyman's book Food: What the heck do I eat. He says as we age we require more protein to maintain muscle mass. But he claims it is the corn fed meat we eat that causes the health problems, He recommends grass fed animal protein. Hyman also puts a negative spin on beans by saying they are mostly carbohydrate. So which food expert do I believe?
you listen to both. Having more protein and muscle mass is good in old age. Dr. Greger's saying excessive protein's bad - and it makes sense. It creates many chronic diseases - you don't want to deal with in old age (trust me). Why doesn't hyman think carbs are good anyway? There's so many types - just saying 'carbs' is blanketing big time.
I hope you will write a book fir parents on how not to kill their kids with bad food. I was recently recommending your channel to my son, who has toddlers. I shudder when I see what these kids are fed. I think there would be a lot of buy in from parents, who might have a lot of buy in in understanding that they are ruining their kids health.
Is red wine vinegar ok to cook with? I've been using that to cook with when a recipe calls for wine. Other than that, I don't consume any wine. Alcohol discussed around 42 minutes into the video.
