The Aquatic mermaid Most American cities do not have the money or infrastructure. Also don't forget smaller towns and suburbs. Take it from someone who had more than his fair share of dealing with Miami-Dade County's transportation system, even many big cities have shitty transit.

Does anyone sit in 45 minutes of bumper to bumper traffic on the highway and then magically at one random point where all the cars just space out and there's a normal open highway again? It's so weird
@dropmelon

As explained in the video, humans have the inability to maintain a constant speed. When a traffic break happens,most accelerate to catch up to the vehicle ahead (bumper to bumper) resulting in eventually breaking that forces the drivers behind to slow down only causing the jam to grow.

I didn't hear an encouragement to drive a new Toyota. I did hear a plug for a car with some features to help if I feel I must drive a car, together with them being thanked for supporting a video one of whose messages was that we should take public transport instead. Good for them. PS Toyota make public transport buses too.

Trucks are supposed to drive in the right lane for that reason, They don't. And they're supposed to drive 10 mph slower because of their slower reaction time in stopping. Instead they drive 10-15 mph faster up on people's bumpers to intimidate them into moving. Basically, most truck drivers are a-holes.

Proud of myself to already keep space ahead of me in heavy traffic. I drive in a slower but steadier pace than people up front who accelerate-brake-cause a stop and than accelerate again- break etc. I am often able to remove some of the stops ahead. Cause by the time I roll in, peolpe ahead are accelerating again. I keep my steady pace and let the accelerate away from me again. The proces repeats. Causing myself and all the people behind me just drive in the smooth steady pace without the brake stops;)

I do that too, and with a massive pickup truck, people think twice about cutting you off, but the extra room does give people a chance to change lanes and those who have been waiting a while for someone to let them in are really grateful. there's one really shitty interchange I had to use for about 6 months where the merge lane for an on ramp was also the exit ramp for the interchange flyover, so it's just a big weave of douchery. I never had trouble getting into the exit lane, because people could see that I was being polite and helping others and would wave me in. made my commute a lot less stressful.

@1:25 Actually, it is possible for 80+% of drivers to be better than the average. Example: If you rate people driving skills from 1-20 and you have a population of 5 and each individual drivers rating are (1, 19, 18, 19, 20). The average is 15.4 and 80% of the population is technically above average.

@TheRaven123
@TheRaven123 7 лет назад
You sample size is way too small to give any conclusion. The sample size in the video is probably +1000 people. I'm this case, it's statistically unlikely for 80 percent of the population to be better than the average.

Why can't the person in front just go faster
@Lyth
@Lyth 7 лет назад
you have a false image of one man at the very front driving at a leisure speed, but there isn't any situation like that.
@10Mike10
@10Mike10 7 лет назад
Actually half the time there is. I recently got stuck in literally bumper to bumper traffic because there was an accident on the other side and people decided they wanted to go slow to take a look. It's generally people who cause traffic.
@Lyth
@Lyth 7 лет назад
Mike Blah Anyone causes traffic, not any single person at this "front". Slowing down at any point on the highway forces the rest behind you to follow, and even if you speed back up to match the person in front of you, a butterfly effect occurs behind that causes a wave of slowing behind.
@10Mike10
@10Mike10 7 лет назад
Yeah thanks I watched the video, but it always starts with one person.

Mike Blah I know. I was simply pointing out that it's not just one man at the front refusing to speed up.
@MystikAzn4vr
@MystikAzn4vr 7 лет назад
The video also didn't mention merging and exiting. Those are also the leading causes for traffic. Many drivers drive a few lanes in from their exit and wait until the very last second to quickly zip past a few lanes to exit (at least signal?), causing multiple lanes to slam on their brakes from the random car suddenly merging into their lane. The other cause is when people merge too fast or too slow. The role of the oncoming ramp is to catch up to traffic speed and merge in smoothly. Some people try to merge into 60mph traffic going 30mph before they try to speed up, worse, some merge at 30mph and keeps it there. Others think the oncoming ramp is a speedway and goes 100mph, zips into 60mph traffic and slams on their brakes. Traffic is caused by people driving too slow or too fast but more often than not it's because they drive too fast.
@skinsman82000
@skinsman82000 7 лет назад
exactly. most ppl are cunts. shitty people cause traffic. it's not cars, trafficnpatterns, etc that cause back ups.
@MystikAzn4vr
@MystikAzn4vr 7 лет назад
Exactly. You can't blame guns when it's the people using the guns.
@derockn00
@derockn00 7 лет назад
Then there are on ramps that are so short, there is literally no time to get up to speed. Not everyone drives a 0-60 3 second car. Going at 3500 rpm on a 99 4runner feels like i'm making my car commit suicide
@MystikAzn4vr
@MystikAzn4vr 7 лет назад
Then it's not your fault, they should make the ramp a bit longer or create a merging lane on the highway for slower incoming traffic.
@derockn00
@derockn00 7 лет назад
I mean the speed limit for those smaller highways are typically 45-55 mph. but me and everyone else usually drive 60-75. Literally no one gives a shit about the speed limit. A good example is the 110 around Highland park. Most retarded highway system i have ever seen in my life. Only been there three times.

I had heard about a study, maybe 5 years ago, where they found this out. Their suggestion back then was to keep your space between cars: you know, the "2 second space" rule that you are taught in driving school, which you appropriately forget once you get your license. I've been consciously trying to maintain this technique while driving on the highway ever since, and it really has some benefits. Not only does it give you enough room to react when braking, it also gives you enough room to accelerate and merge into a faster lane of traffic, if you wanted to do that too.

That is the problem. Right lane is exit, middle lane is default, and left lane is passing. No speed involved. Ah but driving slower means that there is more chances that you'll react fast enough to brake softly rather than hard, meaning traffic doesn't stop, it just temporarily slows. Having a lower limit can increase the average speed you'll be going on the whole trip, if you never have to stop.

In the UK we have automated temporary speed limit sections on some motorways. Combined with speed cameras, these do make a difference because most people obey them and the decreased speed helps to prevent traffic waves.

My town could afford to do the synchronized green lights like in LA. Some of our busiest roads have lights that change to red as you go down the road. For example, if you're driving down the road and stop at the red light you will be stopped at the next red light because that's how they timed the lights. If you manage to get through the green you might be able to pass through all green lights but that's assuming you can actually drive the speed limit or faster since people in my town struggle to hit speed limits if they're 40+mph. Gotta love planning like that.
@PragmaticAntithesis
@PragmaticAntithesis 7 лет назад
Another idea is to replace intersections with mini-roundabouts (move anti-clockwise around the intersection's center, yield to drivers on your left when coming on to the intersection) They are 2x as efficient as traffic lights, and 1.25x better than 4-way stops. That should reduce the amount of chokeholds that cause these sudden slowdowns in the first place.

As a tractor trailer driver, I tend to leave space around my vehicle as a buffer to fluctuations in traffic speeds. And once it's time to stop and go I will avoid shifting thru my gears to stay with the pack and instead create space for others to flow into. The same concept applies where traffic merges due to a lane closure or emergency equipment on the side of the road. When I see the first sign saying that x lane is closed ahead, I change lanes then, rather than like the majority, wait until the last possible moment--which is what causes the rest of traffic to slam on the brakes and cause the traffic jam.

+ FNHot You are very much hurting. Lane changes almost always slows the flow of traffic. As you saw on the video, selfish people think they're the only ones who need to get somewhere and think changing lanes because there's space makes them get to their destination faster. It doesn't. Stay in an optimal lane for as long as possible. If you live in the city you commute, then you expect the exit you'll take, so stay in the right lane if it's in a few miles, or left lane if it's in 15 or 20. Trust me, changing lanes does not get you there faster.

김베론 The eggs in the game stop hatching if you are traveling over 20mph. That is to prevent people from driving cars to hatch eggs. It encourages people to walk. However, traffic in thailand is SLOOOW 90% of the time. So slow that it's not even 20mph. Since I have to drive home everyday in slow traffic, I could hatch some eggs in the meanwhile. IF I go over 20mph and the game informs me of it, when another traffic jam starts I just quit the app and reopen it. lol. It's pretty neat.

Eh, this is an overanalysis to me. I think the root of all the inconvenience in the road is selfishness. The traffic jams I find myself in in my daily commute to work and school are almost always caused by people driving slow in the passing lane, ignoring the people behind them. And then you have people who just don't like to share the road or properly signal. If everyone practiced selflessness, I assure you there'd be no traffic or even accidents.

Advocating block driving? Bad idea! Military, police, firefighters, and EMTs don't live at their stations and often don't have sirens or lights on their personal vehicles. In some places, like here in Dallas, they may need to respond to an emergency but get cut off, blocked, and disregarded as "jerks" on the road. That kind of selfish and irresponsible driving can cost lives. Consider all the possibilities before you respond in traffic or release a video. I would be on the fence about driving a Toyota, but the irrationality represented in this sponsored video makes me think they also lack consideration. Please post a video to correct your mistake. Always stay to the right. If someone is driving fast and catches up behind you, you move to the right. The left lanes are for passing. Especially if both of you are in the far left lane and they put on their left blinker, they want you to speed up and move over. This is the law in Germany and for many places here, everywhere else it is just courtesy. If you want the responsibility to tell people to slow down, put in an application, put in the dedication, and wear the badge.

As a person who drives twice a week in Lima, a pretty crowded city in South America, I can say that this makes sense. Accidents make twice or three times more traffic than they should for these reasons: 1. Drivers slow down to see what happened. This, surprisingly, can as well create traffic on the contrary lane in a highway (funny, right?). 2. Drivers who happen to be on the accident lane want to get out of the lane as soon as they notice it, cutting off other cars, who will have to slow down or stop completely or resort to cutting off the cars on the other lane, so it becomes a triple chain of cut-offs. 3. Cutting off can, of course, create mini accidents like bumps, where drivers will have to stop to see if their car has been damaged, hence adding more traffic. 4. In addition, being cut off enrages certain drivers, who might want to do the same and, in order to achieve that, they will be cutting off other drivers and create another chain of cut-offs. 5. Me first! The worst of all.

I remember my first experience with hypermiling. I had no cash on me, was nearly out of fuel and 45 miles from home. My Chevelle that normally got around 12 miles to the gallon stretched 2 gallons of gas the full forty five miles back home. Simply by timing lights to avoid scrubbing off the momentum I had attained and barely ever pressing the throttle. This is a four thousand pound land yacht with a big thirsty V8. 20+ miles to the gallon is unheard of in an old "muscle car".
