If I feel good in what I'm wearing ... I may wear what she said was out!!! I love bright, vivid colors ...some bright prints .... California/Hawaii style, as I live in S. California. Just like Florida ... weather and location make us gravitate towards comfy styles. I like my classic pieces... but clothes make me feel better, regardless of what I may appear to others. I don't care what other people think... but I also enjoyed this video!!! Thank you from a California Gramma ❤
I gave my pearls to my daughter, who wears them all the time and looks great. I think they would look better on you, Dez, if you weren’t putting them on over the crew-neck top. An open neckline with the multiple strands would look amazing!
Same here, I asked for and received pearls from my parents for my 21st, so did my daughter when she turned 21 [had to wait a few years though as I couldn't find any real pearls I could afford]. I've always loved pearls and have no intentions of stopping wearing them just because I'm now in my 60s.
I am a young man, and this video caught my eye because my mother is concerned with her fashion. If anyone is interested, here is my perspective: nothing makes an older woman look more youthful than what makes her look *strong*, and nothing makes her look older than what makes her look overly *delicate*. We all become increasingly delicate and fragile as we age, and old-fashioned images of women in all cultures look like they might keel over at any point, with their tiny feet, tiny lips, and awkward skirts. Don't chase this vibe! Those who make the opposite statement, who dress to look confident and practical rather than classy and ornate, suddenly ditch decades from their look. Nothing screams "granny" to me like rhinestones, pointy shoes, square gemstone earrings, or thin muslin. What do they have in common? Bling and daintiness. So please, don't be afraid to be a bit more punk, a bit more of a rockstar, metal, or goth, if only in the way those styles feel street-inspired, practical and spontaneous. Over 40, an evening gown, chic princess style will consistently betray you to look like Cruella DeVil. Don't be afraid to look dynamic and active instead, because that is the definition of youth! That is how I see it as a guy in my 20s, who wishes people like my mum had more confidence. Much love, stay yourselves, you got this!
Mmm, I think I would have to disagree about the tiny feet and thin lips, what do you suggest we do if these are our natural features? Wear shoes that are too big or take ourselves off to an aesthetician to have our lips injected with fillers? One is ridiculous the other expensive and not necessarily a good look judging by the exaggerated pouts seen on lots of younger women. Surely it's about making the most of what we have been given and enhancing our good points but retaining our individuality and dressing in a way which we enjoy and gives us confidence as this together with a smile and an awareness of how we hold ourselves and not stooping or slouching will go a long way towards maintaining a more youthful appearance. I don't get your pointed shoes comment either as most older women do not wear them, sadly most have opted for comfort before style by choosing the most hideous of footwear!
Well that says it all being told you look 28 yrs younger, you must be doing something right, good on you too. I'm 73 and hope like you when im 78 hope ill be told I only look 50!
I think that fashion "quirks" like fun glasses are a fun expression of your personality and, if combines with flattering, current clothing, bring a smile to my face.
One of the glasses suggestions she showed in the video was a soft cat eye style. I don't think anyone is suggesting you don't wear cat eye, just be aware of the softening of your features and wear something that compliments that.
I will never understand the women who watch these videos just to comment that they wear whatever they want and don’t want advice. Why watch then? You do you.
I agree with all your advice. I'm 85 and my wardrobe is,maybe too young, but I love fashion and people are always complimenting me on how I dress. Thanks, I so enjoyed your video.
I have a large bust and absolutely agree with you about a good, well fitting bra. Some years ago I went to a well known bra outlet and had my bra fitted professionally, I found out the bras I were wearing were actually far too big! What a difference that made to my posture and my clothes.
Pastels look *very good* on my born with it brown skin. I am 60 and don't care what others think about my attire. I wear what looks good on my skin tone and shape.
I used to flick through these leaflets and catalogues with clothes for older people. In the name of goodness, does anyone actually wear this stuff?? I used to tell my friends I was going to grow old disgracefully, and I more or less do. The clothes shown for men are no better. All elastic waists, Argyll pattern sweaters and beige moccasins or Brown lace up shoes. There needs to be some new designers. 😀
OMG who hasn’t had any work on their face done! I don’t think it’s over done.( you should be empowering women of a certain age instead of giving shady quite mean comment.) and who cares! I don’t think she would deny it if someone were to ask her.
Yeah, but it is a generalisation to say they shouldn’t be worn. My friend is 6 ft tall and strapping. She carries off large, colourful prints perfectly. Small patterns make her look about 99. She always looks enviably stylish.
@@Maisiewuppp I quite agree. I’m tall (though not 6ft) and nearly 80, but I adore my summer dress with big sunflowers in subtle colours, and a long skirt with a large blue paisley-like print. The right colour combinations for the print is key to it looking good rather than garish. And the print itself is important. Some paisleys are ghastly!! I’ve always hated leopard prints and mimsy little flower prints. Also good posture is essential to avoid looking old!
I wear my pearls very carefully, to stay on the elegant ground. It depends on the whole styling. I wear them mostly with white or beige outfits not to pop out too much.
I agree on most. Pearls look nice with something edgy looking, leather trousers and a blouse with the collar up and a waist coat or Bardot over top or bustier. I have one pair of mid length linen shorts for holidays- but they are more practical than stylish though not too bad.
Thanks Zena - yes I think I might try the pearls with an edgier look - I don't currently have a leather jacket but I'm coveting one, so that might work!
Sorry but I disagree with a lot of your points. You are wrong to make sweeping statements about pastels. You dont look good in pastels because your skin tone doesnt suit it!! Youve got yellow based undertones whereas Ive got a blue based undertone. People need to understand what group they are in: Summer, Spring, Winter or Autumn. Im a Summer colour group and suit Summer pastels, certainly not yellow based colours that make me look jaundiced! I suit silver jewellery, lovely pastels close to the face and usually a nuetral bottom like navy. It all depends on how you pair pastels too with a nuetral in the same seasonal colour group.. and of course an overload of pastels looks ageing, so you dont do it! Its the same as looking good in a yellow based colour like orange, and wearing orange in the top and tangerine in the bottom. You just dont do it. Also, a few long strands of modern costume jewellery Chanel pearls, maybe with the double c logo and Camellia flower enamel charms attached look amazingly sophisticated for both older and younger women. Some of these necklaces have cream and black pearls on the necklaces too. They look like the photos you showed of the young models with long modern necklaces, except theyve got pearls instead of beads, or mixed pearls and beads. You should research Karl Largerfeld Chanel modern suits and modern jewellery to get an idea. He designed chic, modern fresh sophisticated and fun Chanel that bears no resemblance to the 1940s and 50s dated pearl necklace outfit combinations. And patterns do suit people. It all depends on both your body shape (apple, pear, straight etc) as well as weight (light, medium or large boned). A bigger lady is going to look awful in small prints that you suggest. Also that a line skirt looks awesome on taller women, think a modern winter country Ralph Lauren look... long boots.. preppy top.. the very best shape to skim over lower problem areas, so comfy and utterly sophisticated and gorgeous. Think Ralph Lauren advertising campaigns around 2014..
As a very fair red head of a certain age, your words very much resonate with me. A soft pastel close to my face seems most flattering as an older woman, where neutrals or brights do nothing for me. I As you said, it doesn't mean I would wear head to toe in a pastel, but definitely I would choose it for fabric close to my face...Great comment. I also have a blue based undertone and silver seems far more suited for me in jewelry than gold tones. Nonetheless, I found this vdeo interesting and making good points too.
I am a very fair light summer and pastels suit me. It won't suit her though like you said. The colorless greige is horrible on me. I think she made a mistake about the oversize clothing. It did not come after the pandemic but before. lol. The tight clothing was in fashion like about 17 years ago. And I love skirts/dresses since I was a teen, so I don't understand what she has against skirts. If anything she should be saying that leggings or tight pants look horrible.
It’s what you are wearing when you rock the pearls. If you’re wearing a stiff brocade dress and your short hair curled and sprayed- well, that’s the old lady look.
Totally agree with your eye for fashion..I am seventy two and fighting the good fight against looking old. Know your body shape and find appropris clothes that flatter.we are all individuals after all. Hey I agree the clothes you disliked were horrible. You look wonderful and are an inspiration... but health always shines through. God Bless and carry on best wishes janet
You made me smile all the way through! I've turned 60 and you are spot on the things you say. Waterfall cardigans - chucked one away yesterday. Brilliant; I will make sure I follow you!
I've had "Color me beautiful" analysis and I'm a summer - pastels are some of my best colors. I will never stop wearing them no matter how long I live.
When I look at older peoples' appearances, what strikes me the most is how weak and unfit most people are, what tired, weak posture, what tightness in the hips, the short tight steps and defeated rounded shoulders and protruding necks. This is not necessary with age although it is everywhere. Moving, using weights regularly, swimming, walking, stretching every day reverses the flabby arms, the poor posture, the flaccid gait. And it doesn't cost a thing. No matter how costly or attractive the attire, it doesn't hide an unfit, stiff and weak frame.
I agree with your comments. This video is lovely. Could you ever do a video on women who are busty, short wasted and what to wear. Also, who makes the bra and tank top shown? Thank you so much. Keep up the brilliant work. ❤
There is no "fits all" ruling when it comes to age, size or personal taste. Practical styling is usually the safest, like dressing for what you are doing on the day or taking into account the weather. I think thinking of what to where as I have got older is more complicated. None of us want to look dowdy but we don't want to be OTT either. I tend to go for smart casual but am not a trend setter.
What is actually wrong with looking old 😮 Us octogenarians should be proud we made it this far. Plus why be concerned what others think, our way got us to here.😊
I think you haven't taken into account people's complexions or hair colour some more senior women look better in pastels but I agree on the frumpy clothes. As a 60 year old with friends of all ages up to the 90's I genuinely don't see any in that type of clothing . Years ago women of a certain age had the short hairstyle , blue rinse , twinsets and skirts but not now ! We are a generation that are retiring later , travelling more , attending festivals , pop concerts etc . Indeed are more active (health permitting) so I say ignore the so called experts on what to wear . They get money out of your views /cash from promoting items etc. Just spend time with family and friends and enjoy life. Noone cares what you wear just wear a smile and socialise
I love twin sets. It just depends on how you combine them with other items. They are CLASSIC, particularly cashmere. I’m not giving up beautiful pearls either. They are beautiful against the face, particularly when wearing darker colors. My mother was absolutely beautiful at every age and always chose sophisticated, well tailored clothing. Nothing trendy for her and people were usually bowled over every time they saw her.
I wholeheartedly agree. I looked carefully at my young cashier at a clothing shop today. She actually had a big stomach, but wore tight clothes and wasn't ashamed to show it. We older women try to hide our tummies with shapeless clothes which makes us look so much older.
Pastels work well on me always. The mauve colors were my last wedding attired and looked fabulous. Depends on your eye color and skin tones. Highlighted blonde…❤
I'm so glad I am still my own individual self. And will dress just the way it suits my happy little self! I am old enough to have found that regardless of what I wear, there is always those who think it looks too 'old' or 'frumpy', or whatever else they think wrong with it. It's all in another 's opinion. And I don't have to bow down to pleasing another person's opinion.
@@Cekatu that's true. I think when I see these type of videos it's easy to automatically feel like anybody who wears the garments that are given as no no's are being viewed as looking old or frumpy... I mean that's what the title says. Don't look old. So it's insinuating that I will look old if I wear such and such. It's so easy in our society today for people to try to bend to everyone's opinion. I mean everyone wants to 'look good'. Really, I wouldn't have to watch them, but at times I want to see if there's something useful that I could apply to myself. I haven't really found that to be so up to this point. Curiosity got the best of me when I came across this video, unfortunately.
I can see your point about the traditional strand of pearls, but I really do think fresh water pearls are a great alternative, can look modern, and can be worn during the daytime.
I'm 68 and have found over the years that the choice of clothing I like to wear has been gradually disappearing. I'm in Australia and alot of clothing stores cater for the younger and slimmer generations, virtually nothing for my age that I would like to wear 😔 great advice 👍 😃
Hi Dez! Great video, I subbed. (I'm 69.) I own several meaningful strands of pearls. My grandmother's, my mother's, my mother-in-law's, and my own, given to me as a Christmas gift. I wear them all with pride, because each has both family and astrological meaning for me. I wear then in many different ways, with different types of outfits. They vary from white to cream to pink. As well, one of my all-time favorite musicians, Bonnie Raitt, covered a song, "Nobody's Girl", which describes a woman who is "as fragile as a string of pearls", and this has multilayered meaning for me going back 35 years now. Clearly, I'm a pearl girl!!
Awww thanks so much! I’ve not heard the Bonnie song- I’m going to look it up. My mum’s pearls do mean a great deal to me - I think they were my great-grandmother’s originally ❤️
Can you do a video about how your hair looks so shiny and youthful. What’s your technique? How do you deal with grey roots coming through? I would love to do mine the same colour with highlights but the frequency of fixing regrowth is a put off. I’m in my 70s.
Yep dying re growth of roots every flipping 4 weeks but I just cat stand that white gremlin look and im 73 now, doubt ill ever be able to break the habit.
I have always dressed in fashion that helps slim my hips and legs, never wear anything overly loose or baggy, and I usually wear black dress pants and a fashionable top with black and teal. I've never particularly liked pearls, although I do have a pair of pearl earrings which I'll wear on occasion. I don't like necklaces as they bother the skin on my neck. I just find it annoying. However, I do love to wear jewelery that complements my clothes, sort of either matching the color or contrasting completely. I've never liked large prints and patterns, and they were very dominant when I was younger. I refuse to wear them. People always tell me I look young for my age. I guess knowing how to dress to showcase my good points is worth it then. I love your video, and I'm happy to see that I've been doing all the right things. And yes, I've always dressed to make myself feel good and so that I'm happy in what I've got on. ❤❤❤ By the way, I'm 74.
Im 73 and I bought this summer an animal print long skirt of a mix of several shades and wear with a plain red or black top with chain straps and ive been complimented on how glamorous I look, of course wearing makeup really helps, seen the 10 yrs younger programme before and after. When i'm given compliments I simply say anyone can do it. Its our choice and I agree with all that was said in the video. Oh and my soon to be 93 yr old mum still wears a little foundation , blusher and lipstick, wears nice clothes but not to young looking and well chosen earrings and necklaces.
I think that everyone has unique skin tones and body shapes and look good in different colors and styles. I was blessed with a mother who had wonderful taste and a unique style. She taught myself and my sister from a very young age to understand this. We all three had different skin tones and bodies. Bless her ! I am 70 and know what looks good on ME 😊❤
Totally agree with you. I m 56 and I love summer dresses but cannot stand patterns and florals.I think footware is important, the wrong shoes can be very aging.. I love to see stylish older women they are inspirational.
I undestand why you don't wear pastells. You are not the type for them. Not your Haar, and not your skincolor. I am 61 now, and all over the years I got a lot of compliments while wearing pastells. Even now. Thats cause I am a woman that can wear pastells, corse it makes my looking realy good. I have faire hair, and an other teint than you have. And so many beautyfull older women can wear pastells and look very good and younger.
@@beautybydezI agree with the shorts. I live in Australia where it gets very hot. I wear the short linen shorts from Uniqlo I am 67. I also prefer the short linen dresses not long or tent shapeless. I do disagree with colour as I am blonde and look good in pastel colours. Baby blue baby pink and my favourite to wear is white. I find it brightens me up and is especially needed in the heat .
I wear a single graduated small caliber pearl necklace. That is very good quality mostly for sentimental reasons and because it’s classical style, which I like.
Very enjoyable and thought-provoking video. I am definitely finding that pastels make me look washed out as I get older. On which subject, you look wonderful in that red jumper! I believe red is “trending” this year so I think I’ll treat myself!
My pearls are the only things I have from my grandmother. If~when I wear them it for the reassurance they offer me I don’t care about anyone else. The rest of your styling has been REALLY helpful. Makes me realize I’ve been headed down “Drab Lane!”
@anna-rosephipps3132 yeah that's true. I had a pair of Calvin klein trousers and because I'm 5"9 it was actually my boyfriend that suggested a long waistcoat they. So I ended up with a long black one, and the trousers were a nice beige colour.
As far as pastels for mother of the bride… often it’s the Bride that dictates the colors of both moms so the photos look good. Many wedding color themes are pastels.
When buying a longer skirt….look for seams. Many seams not just those two side ones. Lengthens and slims the silhouette. Learned that from my grandmother’s sewing magazine dated 1934. I wear my longer skirts with my Frye Harness boots.
I disagree about shorts. I live in Northern California and it gets extremely hot in the summer. I wear bermuda or capri styles that are slim, not baggy. BTW, I’m 66.
I loved your video! This very morning, I told a friend that I don't mind being 70--I've learned a lot and wouldn't want to go back. But I don't want to *look* seventy! 😂 So I concur with many of your design points...how to look younger by not looking older! I'm also an artist (designing and building custom stained glass windows)--so if I do wear a print, it will be an eye-catcher: glorious! Unless it's glen plaid trousers.😉 I've always been small in stature, making up for my size by my personality. Before custom windows, I did custom sewing. Now I'm ready to turn my fabric stash into a nice wardrobe. I'm sure I will learn something from you that will help. And thanks!
Hi Dez. Yes these things sadly do happen . I have gone much lighter in my hair colour. I spent most of my late twenties till I was 40, with lovely blonde highlights. I have hazel/green eyes so although my natural hair colour is mid brown I could easily go lighter. Over the past 18 months I have gone lighter, starting with balayage. Buy was fed up as my roots always needed touching up and this then lessened the lighter balayage tones . I now have a full head of a mix of caramel and light blonde highlights and I can't ever imagine going back to my mid brown hair. I can say its one of the best things I have ever done. My hair is quite long but I look after it well. I do feel older women can get away with it if they look after it. Great tips mentioned in this video ❤
Thanks so much -sounds like we have similar colouring. I am glad to have finally ditched the dark hair - I do my own roots at the moment, but noticed in a changing room the other day that I'd left a long strand of grey at the back - but actually it didn't really matter as my hair is so much lighter now!
@@beautybydezI have to get mine redone every eight weeks. Its an investment time wise and I have gone lighter throughout appointments. I have a very sensible hairdresser though and in honesty I'm probably as light as I should go now. It's more a Jennifer Aniston head of highlights, but I can see how it could go quickly wrong with someone ending up with far too much bleach . It seems the trick is to go for a base of more of an almost caramac ( the chocolate bar) colour, with lots of lovely light blonde highlights on top. I hadn't realised how aging darker hair could be. It's shocking isn't it xxx
Dark brown dyed hair looking brassy after a few shampoos. ALL white underneath. Roots start coming in after two weeks. When I try to go lighter, it gets brassy looking, and pulls red. UGH! Do I let the white underneath grow out naturally, as in cold turkey?? 😩
I love wearing pearls! Some of my favorites are the freshwater ones in a multi strand twisted. They brighten my face up especially if I am wearing black. Kenneth J Lane makes gorgeous ones!
I don't know why women who wear what they want, like,is comfortable etc etc watch these videos then get all salty . this is a video for women looking for suggestions, open to trying new things. No one is saying you look old and terrible, there are exceptions to most rules and if you don't care about that, again don't watch!
I have to disagree with many of your points simply because I’m 59 and wear many of the items you say not to. I get compliments on my appearance on the daily. The advice I’d give is 1. Make sure items fit well and give you some shape. Good undergarments are worth it. 2. Be choosy about color. Some look good in pastels and others not so much. 3. Less is more. Take your time shopping. It’s better to have a few pieces that you wear frequently because you look and feel fabulous in them than a bunch of so-so pieces.
I’m a natural blonde who has gone silver. I think that the pastel palette still looks best with my fair skin tone. Deep colors or “neutrals” tend to make me look sick. I think that color choices may be more variable than you imply. Other tips were useful, thank you.
My number one rule is not shopping in stores that cater to mature women. I'm small and can fit most of the same looks that young women wear, so I buy them! And I agree that large prints look matronly. My closet is almost completely solids, except for a few stripes.
Lovely to get reminder tips and opinions as we get older. Our routines are mostly lovely now, and become second nature as we enjoy the most relaxing time in our lives. Hearing your refreshing reminders on our clothes choices wake us up to take a critical look at how we project ourselves. Just because we are comfortable and happyish enough at our ages, shouldn't mean we've lost our enquiry and wonderment trying new things. I really enjoyed your video and the great comparison pictures. Your hair and make-up are so very pretty. Thank you❤
You nailed it at every point. Excellent video! I think we owe it to younger women to look our best, which means not dressing in old-fashioned-however-comfortable clothing. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I looked up to older fashionable women; they made me feel less afraid of aging. I sitll remember cutting out pictures of Jackie O. and Maurice Templeton and thinking...I am going to dress fashionable like that when I am in my 50+s. And now, I make the effort to do just that. Videos like this help and inspire!
I'm in the country and always had hard jobs. Farming, truck driver etc. I'm 63 now. And have no idea how to dress fashionable. I wear what I have. T shirts and jeans. Thanks for the video. It's a start.
Thank you for this post. It comes at the perfect time. I just turned 66 and I dress for the office, and I look at myself in the mirror every morning and I realize that my wardrobe is ghastly! I'm looking for ideas. I'm short and busty and when I was more in shape, I pulled it off just fine. But I'm not in shape anymore (though I have started again). So now I guess I need a makeover. I'm going to subscribe and see if I can pick up some ideas. So far, everything you said is right on.😮
Thanks so much Mary! You've inspired me! I do have a video coming out on Wednesday about capsule wardrobes, and following that I'll be showcasing some new finds from M&S, Cos and others, so hopefully they will help you to find some new pieces.
I love pastel. It softens my resting wiitch face.😁 My closet is stuffed with clothes, I only wear pjs most of the time or joggers. I had a reduction , bras hurt. I have terrible scar tissue because of that being done. First time here.
Hi Dez! So enjoyed this! Maybe it’s just my perspective, but I feel like “older” women nowadays look so much more youthful than our grandmothers of the same age. I have to say that some of those clothes you found made me laugh out loud! I’m happy to say I don’t know anyone who is wearing those frocks! lol! Hope you have a great rest of your weekend. Oh and I love that red on you!!❤️
Thanks so much Tina! TBH I dont know anyone who wears those clothes either - was discussing this with a friend yesterday - but I guess they must have a market somewhere. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend too - we're lucky to have another day off tomorrow for what we call August Bank Holiday ❤️
There are stunning big prints if you have the eye for it. Wore a black and white Nina Ricci suit at my wedding in 1968 but wore a pale mauve shirt dress with Chanel jacket with beautiful seaming from Escada at my son’s wedding. I love a twin set and have had many over the years. Still have a very nice red cashmere one I still love to wear and don’t consider “old”. Love pearls! So many chic styles. Agree with you on the others.
Agree with you regarding Pastels, I’m 60 with two children married within the past 5 years and wouldn’t of dreamed of wearing pastels/ taffeta as mother of the bride/groom, what is it with pastels aimed at over 50’s and weddings 👎
Pearls: They are a pricey piece of jewelry to “ditch”. I have real pearls and I think they look great if you are wearing them with a denim outfit. Or, you can wear them with a sporty country club look like a cotton pique polo shirt and wide leg trousers which is more popular right now. A modern preppy look is so in fashion with a soft silk blouse and classic blazer and French style silk scarves. Also, pearls look great layered with gold and silver multi length necklaces. Love that look, too. And, pearls look great with that black dress worn with swept up hair to the theatre and an elegant cape. The goal is to not look boring and frumpy. BTW: I loved this video. Spot on!!!
I'm 70 and I love dressing up in colour with things like coloured wooden flower necklaces. Agreed with all of your thoughts on fashion for us older women. X
I'm 84, and for many years I've worn a 50" long rope of .8cm Chinese River Pearls; it's my "uniform" I love the fact that they're inexpensive, but nevertheless genuine pearls, even if they are somewhat irregular, Worn as a single strand, (sometimes knotted), or as a double, or even a triple, depending that day's neckline, The rest of you colour suggestions are already in my wardrobe, but at home, I confess to wearing the most outlandish kaftans---just for fun!
Pearls with a white shirt and jeans and a pair of flats look great. No baggy clothes for me and I'm 76 and always wear nakeup and keep smiling. We are influencers.
