Alas...it's happened to us all! Some of my prettiest pieces had the bottoms blown off...they now are in the yard with flowers bursting from the center hole!

Thank you!! Not only was this a great tutorial on how to make a flower pot, but also how to use that trimming tool. I just got one and was struggling with it yesterday (I wasn't holding it correctly). I'm sorry your pot exploded, but it was an invaluable reminder for the rest of us.

Shit happens! It’s great that you shared this, It makes potters that are not as good as you realise that it can happen to anyone, and to learn from mishaps! I loved the way you took out your frustration by smashing the pot, ha ha. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

When in doubt, I fire my thicker bottomed wares upside down, especially with student projects. I beleieve this allowss the air to circulate around the bottom, and help to dry out the clay, before it gets to the boiling point. Do you run a candling schedule, for your bisque?

Don't worry!! Just soak the planter in the water until moist, then mush it into clay and try it again! Be sure to let it fully dry before firing it!! And that's my advice for you!! Hope it helps!! Love you!!

Thank you for posting this video. I'm in my first Ceramics class and watch your videos when I have time. Seeing you have to deal with things happening reminds me that I'm still learning. If someone as experienced as you can still have accidents, then I shouldn't expect perfection from myself. P.S. Can you please do more with purple? Either wearing a purple shirt or using purple glazes? My 3-year-old daughter, Eva, is also a fan of yours and has me searching your videos for purple. 😊

1) ouch 2) love the way you make the plate and the planter as the same unit, gonna steal that. 3) when you loaded the kiln and as the title was a bit of a spoiler, i worried about the beautiful mugs. seems like they were spared. i've had an exploding sculpt blow up the whole shelf so... at least this was lucky. 4) love your work :)

I feel ya! I rushed some bowls last month and thought I’d experiment with cutting out the preheat in the firing. The result? 3 exploded bowls that took out an additional 9 pieces. Ouch. The “P” in pottery should be for “patience”, I guess!

Recently I sort of incidentally made my first planter (no saucer). I was super excited about it and my teacher was proud of me. I went a little to thin on the bottom but it was shaped nicely. I was actually afraid that I would accidentally cut through it when trimming so I decided to not do very much at all on the bottom. But the sides needed to be cut down. I find trimming difficult and I think for a while I had trouble with holding the tool correctly to cut the best way. By the time my teacher helped me and all I didn't realize how much time had passed and wasn't being as attentive as I should be, and I cut through the side of the pot. It was pretty disappointing but I learned my lesson there. I appreciate this video b/c it shows that everyone can make mistakes even if they are experienced.

i am wondering - what can you do with those broken pieses? do you throw it in the garbage and send it to the landfill or do you somehow recycle / upcycle them? obviously it is a piece of fired clay, so it is ecofriendly even as a trash, but i am curious anyway :)
@jaida4547
@jaida4547 4 года назад
It can be ground into grog. You can put grog into a clay to give it more strength, to use in a sculpture or baking dish for example. Some potters use grog underneath large peices to allow easy movement as it shrinks in a kilnfire.
