game.changer. I learned this trick quite a few years ago and it totally makes ALL the difference. It's amazing how much more polished it looks when you do it this way and you can never see the sliver of nail that's not painted

After I paint my nails, I take a shower and by the time I get out of the shower, all the polish that was on my skin or cuticles has peeled off. Then I apply my top coat and it looks flawless.

phyllissa taylor I don't know how Jen does it, but for me, I just practiced A LOT. Now I'm able to use my non dominant hand like it is my dominant hand! It just takes just used to the feel of it.

You can put both hands resting in the table where you are painting your nails and that gives you more control. But yes mostly practice makes it easier.Cute polish has a video where she explain that situation she even recommends to actually move the dominant hand and maintain the non dominant still.

phyllissa taylor the best tip I can give you is just PRACTICE. You know, practice makes perfect, a common statement but in this case the perfect one. My hands are always just a kind of shaking, I can't keep them still. Especially my non dominant hand, it was horrible. But just take a whole day painting your nails and you will see it gets better. I didn't know the solution could be so simple.. I always obsessed over not leaving anything unpainted, but looking at yours, you really can't tell the difference anyway! Super excited to try this. Me too lol when the polish is completely dry I just wash my hands and even the paint on the cuticles comes off. It ends up looking the same.

I agrea. it covers my whole nail! when my nails are dry. I will take a warm wash cloth with a tad bit of dish soap on it and rub off the access nail polish. it comes off like nothing!

People who are professionals may think it daft that you don't paint the entire nail, but for most people, including myself, we are not professionals, and this looks a good way to practice as my nail-painting leaves a lot to be desired! I will definitely be trying this, thank you!

Its a nice tip but it drives nuts when my nails arn't fully painted on the sides of the nail. Having the nail not entirely painted looks unfinished and looks like I did a half ass job. But hey thanks for sharing anyways! (^-^)

+bfly ness I tend to leave the sides unpainted and then allow myself to get a little messy with the topcoat (since it's clear) so that it might not chip. But chips happen sometimes, even if you dip your entire finger in polish. :(

Jen, you're the only person I know that says to leave the edges bare. I can't do that, because my nails are too weak and will chip (the actual nail will chip I'm not talkin' the polish) - I use the nailpolish to help keep my nails from breaking. I always paint the entire nail - you can do it without it getting all over. And you can use a brush dipped in acetone to clean up the edges. Not that big a deal.

MissJenFABULOUS You've completely missed (or ignored) Bettie's point. She is flummoxed that you would show a "tutorial' like this without even mentioning that some people have weaker nails than you and NEED the polish to go right to the edge. A little polish clean up is the trade off ... ie: not that big of a deal. She's not talking about how it looks. Your response speaks volumes about you.

I used to paint my nails that way. Then I came across when of your early tutorials, I think it was how to give yourself a manicure at home or something, and you mentioned that you keep from being so messy with your polish by not painting all of the nail. It took about a month of practice, but I finally got it down and now I can paint my nails quickly and very cleanly. Its actually quite relaxing and something I love to do for myself.

I have this issue, you need a few things to manage to keep having painted nails. A peel of base coat, I use NYC strip off, cheap and works perfectly. When entirely clear, add a rubberised base coat (I use orly) leaves your nails flexible but the nail polish and your nails saved from breakages. If your a messy nail painter or doing the off hand, look at something called a latex barrier, you paint it on your skin, wait for it to dry, paint your nails, peel of the latex and bingo clean pretty nails with no painted skin. Add top coat, I use the orly top coat to go with the base coat, multi top/base coats will mean more Chipping. I'm hard on my nails and this means no Chipping, if it gets warn down the peel of base coat means they pop off with a bit of peeling and they come off whole xD you don't need acetone and then repeat. Despite my paranoia with Chipping I've become quite enamoured with nail designs (Groupon is awesome for decent nail polish decent price) Any questions, yell :)

This is my biggest pet peeve I tell the lady to always go to the edges, am I the only one that this technique drives crazy?! For real! It takes a couple hand washes and your good to go the messes are gone :)

I like to paint my nails "messy" because it's so easy for me to just wipe up the edges. Plus it annoys me when my whole nail is not covered. Other people might not notice but i do so i like to cover my whole nail.

This video really helped me. I used to think, to get the perfect manicure, you needed to cover your entire nail bed. Then, I got nail polish all over my cuticles, on the sides of my nails, and in between the ridges and it looked horrible. I would then attempt to clean up the mess on my nails with some Q-tips and some nail polish remover and when I was done, it looked even worse than it did before because I had accidentally removed some of the nail polish off of my nail bed. Then, I would get frustrated, remove the nail polish, start all over again and get the same result. This video really taught me how to get a perfect, non messy manicure. Thanks Jenny!

Dont put too much or too little nail polish also use the proper size according to your nail sometimes people have very small nails and obviously a big dot will look messy. Ti me it helps to quickly clean the nail polish out of the dotting tool before i dip it in the polish again so it turns out more neat

Instead of dipping the dotting tool directly into the bottle, (I used to do that, it gets messy) use a palette, or even the bottom of a plastic cup or a paper plate. I have even used a spoon. Take your nail polish brush and put some polish onto your palette/makeshift palette. Better to do less and add more often, it sets up quickly and you will end up getting string-like nail polish lines on your nails. Also, only use the tip of the dotting tool! Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT cover the entire ball at the end of the tool. This will create a HUGE mess. Finally, don't have so much polish on the tool that it is dripping off, but also make sure you have enough so that you get a clean dot/shape. Hope this helps!

+Grace Muncey I would like to second the "use a palette, plastic cup or paper plate" method. I'd also like to say I gave up on my dotting tools and now use bamboo skewers (which are basically just giant toothpicks). I use the plastic lid to a deodorant spray (I keep them all and have a supply I wish I could share with you, Rossana!). I add polish to the inner edge of the 'cup' by letting it drop from the brush, then I scoop it up with the skewer/toothpick. Then I let the small blob that scooping creates do the work for me. Try hard not to actually touch the nail with the stick/tool - just let the polish kinda "land". It's a bit like icing a cake - there's a learning curve but once you get it, it's awesome fun. Thank you for this video. Great tips! I can't believe I've never thought of this. And I've been paining my nails since I was about 15 (I'll be 33 in a week). I did this technique for the first time on my last mani, and I got it PERFECT the FIRST time! I couldn't believe it! Thanks, Jen. You SO rock. My nails are gorgeous every time now, with NO cleanup! I'm thoroughly impressed. :) P. S. Your nails are GORGEOUS. I'm so jelly. I've always hated my nail shape, and I can't ever seem to grow them more than a 1/4 or an 1/8 of an inch. :-/

very good technique! just a friendly tip and you may already know. the 2-3 strokes works really well depending on how wide or small your polish brush is but the 2-strokes is similar to yours and the 3-strokes starts in the middle with a slight pressure and then the sides. thanks for always sharing!

Ha! I feel like you busted me on your "before" technique -- that's how mine used to look all the time. Thanks for this video; it was helpful. I've become better at it after watching many of your nail art videos. Also a wider nail polish brush has helped me a lot as I have wide fingernails. My fingers are kind of puffy and the sides come up over the nail-- any suggestions on how to avoid painting the side cuticles? When I had a manicure done, the manicurist lightly pinched my finger from the bottom, but that's hard to do on myself while painting my nails. Thanks again!

Thank you, I’ve been painting my nails for years but never looked into the correct way to do it, so I always made a mess that I had to clear up. Last night I painted them leaving a gap and the outcome was so much neater. I need to practice more on my right hand, but it makes so much sense doing that :)
