I've been binge-watching these recovery fail videos for the past 2 hours now and I'm laughing at the fact thats it's always a $3000 junker being pulled out by a 700hp diesel truck that completely rips it to shreds like this one.
Amir K With the amount of tension that rope has, if it snaps (especially metal cables), it will fling back with tremendous force. Enough to cave your skull in and seriously injure or kill you, especially since it probably has metal hooks that connect it to the hitch or whatever you're pulling from. There's a video on RU-vid that shows something very similar to this, and the rope snaps and goes right through the windshield... Completely rips the guy's lower jaw off. And he got lucky it didn't hit him in the forehead. Usually with metal tow cables, you put a blanket or a tool bag or something over it. Even rope can be dangerous.

Bobby0345 *Their biggest mistake was using a snatch strap*. I won't even let one of those things anywhere near my truck. Most don't know how to use them properly, far too often causing unnecessary damage and/or injury. Hell, I'm not even sure there is a way to use a snatch strap properly (without excessive risk).
No one made an effort to clear the mud out of the way because they didn't want to get their hands dirty. Actually some of them knew that was the obvious thing to do but they didn't want the ridicule they would have got from other bullies in the group

I realize I have the benefit of hindsight now, but I think a hi-lift jack on a base might have lifted him up enough to free the rig so it can be pulled without damage. Or dig a while. It isn't always a good idea just to pull harder.
To get the jeep up the hill after it was fucked up, you should have pulled it in the direction the front wheels where rolling. Sideways from the jeeps perspective. lol Once the front axle made it over the hill the rear would follow and you could at least drag it far enough to say it's out. What they're doing is like pushing a full wheel barrow up a hill sideways. Wheels don't roll like that.
oh its fucked up, dont you worry! wait til he pulls out on the road, his first statement will be "dam, my truck is pulling to the left!" then he will try and get it aligned and it will never go in to spec because the frame is tweaked. never tow/pull like that.. i bet he has no problem selling it tho.. takes a second to realize whats going on, youll think its everything else before you start thinking frame
it actually looks like the strap was stuck to the chassis. the axle went back UNDER the vehicle. that's not gonna happen if they were pulling from the axle itself.
***** by the looks of things his wheel was stuck in the hole, with the angle he was pulling it on the wheel stayed put and the body moved,if they were pulling from the axle im pretty sure with a snatch like that it would have ripped that axle right off.
I do self-recovery with a 4' farm jack on a flotation pad. Lift the vehicle about a foot or two then fill in the rut "under the tire with wood or rocks. Re-position the jack until all four tires are at grade on the firm material you placed under the tires. Then if it is very sloppy a tow line would help or lay planks or many branches down over the mud and slop on the path to firm ground. Two 4' Jacks are better than one. Won't work on vehicles that do not have bumpers without jacking points...
I wouldn't believe that this actually happened... but it's right here, plain as day. Just when I think I've seen it all... something wholly unbelievable presents itself. Did it occur to anyone that the owner of the XJ might have wanted his Jeep back in ONE piece... not in pieces.
Man, this was embarrassing to watch. Where did this happen? Some 3rd World country? I see more and more of this, guys wont spend 20-30 minutes with some shovels. Everybody is in a hurry and has to Yank the shit out. Laziness will cost this guy some serious bucks. Right on dude . . . I knew the front end was coming off after watching the first 5 seconds of this video. They should have tried to hitch on the tail end with the front that deep in the mud OR as you suggested, shovel out the front end a bit. Too bad too, that was a pretty nice Jeep.

Where the jeep was, no, digging and boards would have done nothing, that jeep so so deep in the mud that the tire was burrowed in the mud and would go no where where, should have just strap it up the right way and do carefully, no all rough and fast
waay too much time skipping school. Simple machines grade 5 science. Personally when i get into situation i scan the area i am around for items that can make the job easier. These are all very simple minded men who reply on machines . Like someone else said about 20 guys standing around that could shoveled it out yeah and im sure they also could have found some large logs that were laying around the area that would have easily helped with that task.
