Hey Sean, you're an inspiration. I'm American, 38, and a bjj dude, but I love muay thai. Love it. I'm looking at taking the leap to thailand one day and I was curious if you have any advice?
“If you fight children and midgets your a bad person and shouldn’t be watching this video” 😂🤣😂🤣 had to pause I was laughing so hard!! Thanks for the awesome videos man!

This video is more important than the "how to videos" . Great video. I've seen more people make mistakes than do it correctly and if you keep practicing incorrectly its becomes difficult to unlearn those mistakes later. Again, great video.
No it doesn't, you're wrong. Proper technique comes with developed coordination and strength. The more a student practices, the closer they'll get to efficient technique. Expecting textbook movements from beginners is insane and unproductive.
@@robertpaulsin6109 you seem to have miss read what i was trying to say. If someone is practicing anything in an incorrect manner not knowing what is it they are doing wrong will become their second nature and then it becomes difficult to unlearn those things. Not impossible but very difficult for sure.
Sean, the part regarding the head movement absolutely rocks! Every time I go to gym with my colleagues - and 100% of them are boxers - they go: "YOUR HEAD MOVEMENT SUCKS!!! IT SHOULD FLY AROUND THE GYM LIKE A FLIPPIN MISSILE ON COCAINE!" I'm so fed up with their bullshit so I feel like kicking the shit outta their tiny little thighs next time we spar. Big thanks for finally explaining the difference between head movement in boxing and muay thai! Cheers from Ukraine!
@@cakesnatcher4541 commies live a bit to the North from us, bro. They're known as "Russkies", and us, Ukrainians, are those who currently protect lazy Europeans from them Russkies, we ain't commies.
Have them watch a head kick knock out compilation video. You will see a lot of head kicks come in from extreme head movements left or right. That exaggerated bob and weave in boxing will get you kicked or kneed in the face in MT. I had some boxing experience before MT and had to break that habit . A nice 25% power head kick on a slip or bob leaves a lasting impression when sparing .
@@scottrichardson1014 yes, I agree! Boxing was my first martial art before MT and I experienced the same situation later in a MT sparring. Slamming your own head into someone's shin changes quite a lot, that's for sure!
I’ve been Kickboxing for about 4 years, and am a brown belt in K1 (yes, we grade!) and this still a super helpful video! We forget the importance of shadow boxing, and the importance of doing it correctly. Reality is, this is as close to sparring as you’re gonna get and is better than a heavy bag for working many techniques....so thanks for great reminders. I’d say number 4 is the most important. If you stand still you get hit. Simples. Anyone can move, so do it!
Started muay thay 3 weeks before confinement. Felt in love with it. The gym I use to go provides live training now, focussing on HIIT mainly. Your technical approach makes a great complement because no one tell me stop doing that. Thanks for being there.
I turned this video on and my heart was beating fast because I was worrying if I make any of these mistakes. I made some of these in the past but have grown out of them. Thanks for the video, Sean! 🙏
Just starting out my MMA journey, getting in shape and preparing for my first day in the gym. Your videos are really helping me get familiar with Muay Thai and I’m excited to start training!
7 and 8 really hit home for me. Only about 2 months in and all the more seasoned students are always telling me to relax and breathe. I totally understand it logically but emotionally I'm like "You're trying to punch me in the face, it's hard to relax!" That and so much doesn't feel natural yet, so I feel like I have to focus so hard mentally that it's easy to tense up and not breathe right.
Thank you so much for this. Just starting to learn Muay Thai and this is already making me more aware of not starting out with some of those mistakes that I'm sure I would have been doing.
You gotta new subscriber with this one! Very grateful for the insight. Im learning here and fight tips for the underdog channel then go outside and kick the bag for 30 minutes then shadowbox for 25-30 minutes.....kill with some wind sprints. This is my 3rd week of doing that 3-4 days each week and I can actually see progress and excited about where my kicks will be in a few months!
Hey Sean Thank you so much for this video. I am always felling silly shadow boxing and I have been training about 4 years now. This is really helping me fine-tune this aspect and mind frame when training. This video is gold!!!!
"Like they tryna fight childrens"😂😂😂😂 dunno why that part got me dying😂 anyway I always whatch your videos and I was wondering where this gym at? Like the place is beautiful, I would love to train in a similar environment, with all that nature and and stuff close to me, feel very relaxing. Keep it up with training💯👊🏾
This is at my home in Thailand >> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B3X7NDKASDA.html I hope to open up a gym on this Island sometime soon 👊
@@seanfagan wow is beauty there, if you open up a gym there I would come for a trial, I trained all over the places so far, Thailand is on my check list tho, I know there you get the best muay thai training, I practice MMA but I like to take a brake from time to time to go train either in other gyms or in other martial arts
“If you fight children and midgets you should stop watching” 😂🤣😂🤣 I had to pause the video for a bit I was laughing so much. Thanks for the great video man!
I picked up Muay Thai about 2 weeks ago, and I am liking it so far. I always concerned over correct posture when I am practicing at home, so thank you this is helpful
Thanks for this video Sean, I never know whether to make a sound while training or not so it's good to know that it's a thing you should do. I always feel silly because I make a "iss" sound, but this has helped me
Liked all your points till the end fully extending punches and kicks against thin air will build up joint problems in knees hips and elbows better to just be 1" or 2 from extension to stop injury to joints
Great content man. In taekwondo you need to spill your hips too when you're kicking. If you don't do that you'll hit a elbow, in wtf, it means not scoring. A think the mainly difference in Taekwondo kicks it is that you retract the leg using your knee in the end of the movement.
Me and my son are just starting out (literally first class was the other day.) And i was doing all these mistakes this video is very helpful. Excited to learn more...
Thank you very much! You mentioned all the valid and true points! But one more thing that I personally think to avoid is 100% dependency on reflex..One must plan the technique before executing it.. It makes the mind work better with the body! Thanks! 🙏❤️😊
Let me tell you. I can't thank you enough for providing this content. I have 9 children (5 boys 4 girls) and there is no way I can afford to put them all in MA. I am a quick learner and have done some MT in the past. You're no BS approach is exactly what I need to learn and teach some of the basics.
Wow that means so much to hear! Thanks for letting me know you’ve been getting good use out of the videos. Be sure to keep in touch and let me know how your family progresses along their martial arts journey!
thanks for the tips! i used to have the habit of throwing lazy kicks during shadowboxing, recently trying to fix that. this video came at the right moment
The style that you practice doesn’t determine the power of the kicks. The person who practice the style is the one who determines the power of the kick. Awesome video, good job!
It's more of a technical application. Muay Thai kicks are usually more blunt impact and powerful from a functional standpoint. Other chambered kicks are more hidden or quicker but not as powerful.
It definitely matters though. TKD or karate kicks don't put as much body into the kicks, which means two things, 1; faster kicks, and 2: more powerful kicks. There are situations where you prefer one nd others where you prefer the other, and the person who practices them definitely has huge effect on the power and speed of the kick, but the technique of the kick also determines power and speed.
Wow.. So I was pretty much doing everything wrong lol. I mean yeah I visualize and ad defensive footwork but can't get over the fact that I was shadow boxing with T-Rex arms. Everyone was saying I got nice technique for a beginner but for some reason I didn't understand why I would always fall short at punching in sparring. Great tips and videos, you just got a new subscriber!
A trick I learned is to imagine fighting yourself when you shadowbox. Start by picturing someone that looks and fights just like you then start thinking of ways of beating yourself. Then, when you get good at that, start changing up your shadowpartner to keep the experience feeling new. Make it taller, shorter, wider, thinner, try making it different each time you shadodwbox, you can even try changing it while your fighting. Soon you'll come up with so many different new tricks that you'll have something to use for any occasion! Good luck and Muay Thai!
Depends on what your kicking and the type of kick.sometimes you want a fast kick Like a jab.sometime you want power kick like a hook.so it's good to know both and be more versatile.
Hello Thank you for sharing. I discovered your chain during my confinement at home and it is a pleasure to work with your advice. I became addicted to your channel. 😂 Thank you from France 🇫🇷 Huss huss
especially point 9 is really important. even if you feel like your shadowboxing becomes more basic when you vizualize, its still way more effective than to just flail your arms around in a 17 punch combo into shoeshine. of course those shadowboxing rounds where you throw volume into shoeshines are useful aswell, but its only good for building speed.
Your a really good teacher, thank you. I have messed up legs though so I have to be careful of kicking, but I have watched a few videos and I think your great. You explain in a way that makes sense.
Thanks Sean some great pointers I was making some of the mistakes when shadow training now i can improve retune my technique correctly , especially most commonly using same sequence not mixing it up. Thank you🙏
In terms of staying stationary while shadowboxing, I tend to keep moving. I've noticed a lot of times that most of our class is staying stationary while my Coach and I are using footwork and slapping defense into our shadowboxing and balancing that with offense.
