He was killed in a traffic accident. The man had a life ahead of him and a whole lot of music to make, yet in less than a minute he was gone. May he rip
DJ Shadow's album 'Endtroducing' released in 1996. Nightmares on Wax's album Carboot Soul released in 1999. Both predate Nujabes. Both albums highly infuential. I'd even throw in Massive Attack's Mezzanine in 1998 in that mix
Back in early 2000s, Samurai Champloo on Adult Swim every weekend introduced me to a whole new world of hip hop and anime that's actually mainstream now. It's crazy.
Yesterday, he died exactly 10 years from now, at Shinjuku. One of the few and maybe the only one i'll listen for the rest of my life. For me he had the greatest artist soul, RIP Nujabes "Seba Jun" my inspiration
i’m a lil bit of the opposite. i got into a nujabes from a friend and then checked out samurai champloo. both mean a lot to me in terms of like a mindset of valuing any moment be it good or bad and doing things day by day. RIP nujabes 👒
Me too! I remember when Samurai Champloo aired on Adult Swim, the intro and art style had me hooked! I still have the original soundtrack Cd too, kinda disappointed in myself for losing the case though🥺
Fun weird fact: dilla and Nujabes share the exact same birthday on the exact year. Who’s to say they weren’t the same soul split in two, creating a foundational genre on opposite sides of the world at the same time. Their synchronicity is just insane honestly.
Nujabes and J dilla have been my favorite producers since like 2007. I learned they shared the same birthday when I was young and still believe this is crazy 😂. Rest In Peace to them both

@michael lynch Fuck you headass boy. Read the comments and you'll see plenty of respect for Dilla. Don't ever disrespect Seba Jun like that again you filth.
When Asian and Black culture collide, they truly make beautiful music together! Just always make sure to respect the classics these modern artists and producers get inspiration from because I see countless people claiming “x person” is the only person who created a genre. They make these claims all while being ignorant to the history(which is often way older than they are), and all of the OGs who quietly laid the groundwork and made songs of that genre years before their favorite musicians did. Instead of trying to stick a flag on the originator, learn to love the genius behind each artists/producers rendition of music!
Of course the originators will always be respected by the artists. The only ones that pull bullshit claims are mere listeners/fans/audiences that don’t know any better. There’s always something beautiful when hip-hop that’s created beyond our own country. It’s the reason everyone loves the Beatles, who were influenced by American blues and rock. Us creators will always respect the roots of this game, as long as our different approaches are also respected and recognized.
My buddies and I discovered Nujabes and we had never heard of Samurai Champloo. We love the music but I thought it was interesting that in my case the music reached me before the anime.
UltraZAKII yep, same with Force of Nature. Departure and Impression are some of the greatest albums ever made, I can’t believe how underrated they are despite Samurai Champloo’s success.
There's nothing wrong in being "late" to something (I believe everyone finds things at their own perfect time) but if you haven't been listening to Nujabes, Dilla, or anyone else for that matter like THAT, don't front like you have. It doesn't make you any less of a fan nor does it take away what their music means to you. If anything, the main message in any real art is always to stay true to yourself. Peace.
When i got into lo-fi i heard some of hsi work but wasn't really into it, but after watching samurai Champloo I cant stop. It's so good man, like unreal.
Some people just hate when things become mainstream. They like being a minority group that listens to an artist or genre. I get that when things become mainstream they attract those “hipster type” that jump on every new fad, but front like they’ve always been there. But music can be truly owned by everyone. Whether 10 people hear a song or 10 million, it always belonged to all of us
michael lynch Stop spreading your pointless comments. We are just trying to show some respect for Nujabes’ person and legacy. No need to be negative here.
@michael lynch this is a Nujabes video, I don't think anyone is trying to disrespect Dilla. Ask Genius to make a Dilla video, people want to talk about Nujabes's legacy here
Bro Nujabes is THE reason for "lo-fi hip-hop." I saw it happening before it became huge and it was all anime fans who had watched Samurai Champloo. It's all people who wanted to do what Nujabes did. I don't know why the term "lo-fi" really took off since it's mainly just jazz stuff
*Also J Dilla. They're god fathers of this genre even though today most of it is bullshit. Lofi is the inspiration of both of these artists. It doesn't quite match though most lofi artists don't get it. They just want attention, theres no true passion
Half of Lofi for me is the music, the other half is the cool backgrounds some of these artists come up with. If anyone knows what this art style is called please tell me.
I first started listening to Nujabes tracks in high school after hearing them on Samurai Champloo. I've listened so many times taking the bus, on long trips and in the evening to help me sleep. It still creates exotic images in my head, a peaceful future I imagine for myself. RIP Nujabes and thank you.
Super disappointed I didn't find out about Nujabes until after he passed. But I became an instant fan when I found out he did the Samurai Champloo theme.
Finally, Nujabes is getting the recognition he deserves. I can’t wait to see Substantial and Shing02 in March. I love them so much. It’s been a little under 20 years since Samurai Champloo and even Model Soul, yet both of them keep Nujabes’ music alive to this day. Rest in beats, Nujabes. ❤️
“Modal Soul” is one of the greatest albums ever, I mean, ever. Such a beautiful body of work. “Samurai Champloo” is also my most favorite anime of all-time, bless this video.
I love Nujabes, but lo fi started long before him. Here's some lo fi from 10yrs before Nujabes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-69oNGLx0Sxg.html
*My all time Nujabes list* 1) Luv Sic 6 2) Feather 3) Space Between two worlds 4)Brothel love 5) Luv Sic 1 6) Beyond 7) Think different 8)Sky is falling 9) F.I.L.O 10)Shiki no Uta *You won't be disappointed with any track. Modal soul and Metaphorical music are sheer masterpieces.*
Nujabes is still my biggest inspiration to do something what i love the most, music... And this legend appeared in my life just by making the greatest opening of all time when i was a kid
I haven't even seen the video yet. But I remember even before lo-fi was labeled "lo-fi" I remember back in the days in the early RU-vid people called it NuJazz and jazz-hop. I hope this video does it justice. Because some of older people who were here before remember the days of RU-vid channels such as ie4tbe4tz808, bob42jh, S0ulCreative, Yoosin, a.reviewer, Spreadingdopemusic, Musicforyoursoul, Mrsuicidesheep (from 2011), Returntozero, Benevolent.vibe. etc. These channels dedicated they're whole channels to NuJazz/jazzhop and everything that circled Nujabes.. Sad, many of these channels stopped uploading. But I highly recommend anyone who loves Nujabes to check them out. Man the 2010s were the days. Peace ✌🏻 - @visualinspirations
Damn... all those memories !! Them channels where my place to-go-to back in the day !! Nujabes, Uyama Hiroto, Marcus D, Emancipator, Nomak, Haruka Nakamura, Kuroisoul... Greatness !!
Dilla's death was tragic because he knew it was coming and so used the last of his time to craft a masterpiece. Nujabes' death was tragic because it was so sudden that no one, least of all him, could have prepared for it.
fat jon still getting 0 credit smh, dude put in just as much work on the samurai champloo soundtrack and had super inventive albums spanning close to 2 decades now
As a fan of both I can agree that Nujabes overshadowed fat Jon. Both are dope along with uyama hiroto. Beyond love by fat Jon puts me in another dimension
I found nujabes when I wasn't looking, I lost him in time and had no idea. When I realised what I lost. my heart cried and still does. But I cannot describe the pride and love I have whenever I hear the soul.
it's pretty awkward unless/until you have a little understanding of how the japanese language sounds in this video, Shing02 says it the correct way, but Jacques' pronunciation is passable too
I just remember how much preparation it took-chores, showering, meal prep-getting everything outta the way so when "Battlecry" took us into an episode of Samurai Champloo back in 2004, I wouldn't be disturbed or distracted. And this was before I even cared about who was on the track or the actual plot of SC. The way the song made me feel was indescribable.
I stumbled unto lofi at one of my lowest points. I was struggling with depression and had shut myself in. However, lofi led me to Samurai Shamploo, Cowboy Bebop, the music of those shows and eventually, Nujabes and J Dilla. I’m really thankful I found it all. Watching those shows and seeing the Sunflower gang and the Bebop crew seek meaning to life helped me through. Seeing all these people in the comments pay their respects fills me with warmth. There’s nothing but love here and I consider y’all friends. Let us keep the names of these legends alive, and hope that their art finds more people and fills them with luv(sic).
@michael lynch Why are you negative? People acknowledge Dilla too. People are just trying to show love to Nujabes. It doesn't have to be one or the other. You don't have to put someone else down to uplift someone else. like both. I respect both. Also, respect the dead. Your childish ass scouting every comment just to say stupid shit. Take your negative energy elsewhere.
michael lynch actually he didn’t. J Dilla is on Nujabes level in terms of placement. Lo-fi style existed since the boom bap days and hip-hops conception. J gets a lot of credit but there were others who but the foundation for both him and Nujabes
I honestly hadn't even heard of Nujabes before watching this video. Its clear that so much of the lofi music around takes influence from what he was doing, SUPER inspiring!
This surprised me really, n I didnt know lo-fi hip hop was really from nujabes, I hear it as jazz/hip-hop like gang starr, guru (R.I.P.), j Dilla (R.I.P.), The roots, pete rock, common n etc. Including nujabes himself. I didnt know alot of ppl knew about him which I'm happy alot is n' I didnt know samurai champion is one of the greatest anime which I'm proud of. Because I see it as underrated both samurai champion n' Trigun (Vash The Stampede) because not that much ppl talk bout it n both their song or background music is great not hiphop but in music in general just like cowboy Bebop, both trigun n samurai champion. Thank u nujabes (R.I.P.) for all the beats, sounds n music when u was around n alive. Ik u making heaven feel more relax, soothing n comfortable with them beats. When I heard it I felt different, like I fell in love n just got my mind expand my horizon of sound like I was in another world. U one of my favorite producers between I said either maybe top 10 but mostly my top 5. R.I.P. NUJABES, I'm still listen to ur samurai champloo beats n more.
I listen to Nujabes and feel a deep and somber, addictive sadness, as well as an appreciation. I don’t know that there are many more artists that can do that to me from just a sonic level where I can’t even understand the words. Imaginary folklore for instance....talks about being in different moments and having the positive outlook to know you’ll feel better in awhile. I didn’t look up the English translation before going through a sea of emotion. To be played that way like an instrument...maybe for once I don’t have the real words for it.
I remembered the first time I heard Nujabes music. When I was first started out writing and wanted to find homework music to listen to. Aurarian Dance was the name. Then came Luv Sic and afterwards, learning of its creator's history. And as grand finale would put it, "I met a metaphorical girl in a metaphysical world..."
I still remember so vividly the first time I heard Nujabes, it was a winter's night in Sydney in 2007, me and my friend were sitting in his car waiting to pick up some buds, my friend always had a much more refined taste in hip hop and when he played me luv(sic.) pt3 for the first time, it honestly changed the course of my musical interests forever. I loved shing02 on the track, but it was the beat that had me hooked. Needless to say, Nujabes has been on constant rotation ever since that winter nigh. Thank you Jun Seba.
2 years ago I watched samurai champloo and that's how I discovered nujabes. He quickly became one of my favourite artists, his music will keep on living through his fans forever 💖
A very interesting and well researched video. And I like the calm way you presented the facts and that you got Nujabes' actual collaboration partners for interviews. Thank you a lot for this.
