You don’t really realize how funny Tom really is until he’s in front of an audience…when he’s doing his tour videos there’s hilarious gestures that your not paying attention to because you’re focusing on the information he’s giving… those gestures are more in the spotlight when he’s in front of an audience

Great interview, Tom. NYC is my hometown. It’s nothing like it was. It’s been destroyed and there doesn’t seem to be a way to ever bring it back.

I remember when a small independent bookstore on the upper west side had to close because a big box bookstore opened in the neighborhood. That bookstore was a lone reed... standing tall, waving boldly in the corrupt sands of commerce.

Just found this channel. I will be coming to the next Caveat! I also wish more people wanted to make the Bronx great again, speaking as someone who lives there currently. I was born in this city but I really struggle with feelings of not belonging here. It often feels like the nicest parts of the city are out of reach for people like me, financially speaking and also demographically. It just leaves me feeling resentful and jealous. But that's terrible, because this city is simply so beautiful and diverse. I often wish I was a transplant with money, who could enjoy the nicest parts of this city and just pass through. I often just feel sad and angry that conditions and resources are so uneven across the city. Anyway, thanks for these videos. And thanks for caring so much.

What are the rich going to do when they finally succeed in chasing all the poor out of Manhattan and the poor decide they will not be traveling an hour to go to work to not truly be a part of the city anymore? You know they won't do the work themselves.

It doesnt matter if the city got “better” wen u realize they didn’t do it for us, they did it for ppl they made it seem were better than you. If you can’t afford the city you grew up in and loved, it’s not better. Wen they take away everything that made the city awesome..nope it’s not “better” Sigh..I knew it’s almost cliche, but it’s true I remember every neighborhood had something really cool that set it apart from the others, and going to different parts of the city was actually something to look forward to. There were independent stores that were so amazing, you’d meet the owner right away and see how great their ideas were 😢 And 8th street in the 90s was awesome, I worked at Rickys, made so many friends from different parts of the city and if you got close you visit them in other boroughs and have a reason to go back n discover great things about that place. And all the clubs! I’m so glad we experienced that before Guiliani. Another cool place to meet ppl and discover things about yourself..But Bloomberg ughhh he was the worst. It all went downhill after him. The worst thing about him was the way he looked down on real New Yorkers, the ones who didn’t grow up on the Upper East Side or Central Park South smh

James Howard Kunstler has written extensively on the unsustainable urban environment, including disposable skyscrapers. Housing is the biggest expense for people yet rental rates and housing costs are now prohibitively expensive for a large segment of the population

Fascinating interview. Too bad Baker couldn't or wouldn't discuss what we can do personally to save New York.

What an interesting interview! I love hearing about New York and what can be improved. I lived in the city for 5-years and loved it. Kevin Baker said the Republican party is despicable but so is the Democratic party. It's like comparing apples and oranges of imperfection. I'm neutral and don't subscribe to either party but I don't see that one is any worse or superior over the other. They both have their good and bad points. As an artist, I enjoyed the discussion on the arts and I also have a novel coming out soon:-) 🧚‍♀

Your guest gives a great answer to your question, Tom. He says we have done wonderful things in the name of freedom, but also horrible things. I agree. Hence, I would add, that we need a new ideological paradigm. Not Marxism, surely, for we know well the virtues of business. But we have to change as a culture, through the realization that capitalism, and our cult around capitalism, isn't cutting it. We have to create a new ideological model in which freedom, in the sense of purely private economic interests, are a part of the calculus in our policy- and decision-making, not the whole kit n caboodle. Love your stuff BTW ❤💩

Great show Tom, Kevin seems like a genuinely nice guy that would be fascinating to listen to over a couple of beers (or coffees) I'm sure he has some amazing stories i.e the legless guy on the subway. Had to laugh at the firefighters topic which took me straight to that scene in Gangs of New York 👍🤘

The storefronts are empty because people buy things through Amazon. That's not unique to New York City.
