I don't know if anyone would be interested but on Khan academy there is whole "chapter" about restoration in subject art history. It's one youtube video per lesson but from there you can find more art channels with more restoration. Aaaaaand it's for free and you don't even need an account
Baumgartner is like a modern day sophistication of the art restoration industry. Stripping all the fancy studio equipment, cinematic framing of the footages and the drama of Julian's voice over, its just Sara Drew's same work. both are absolutely intensive and impressive indeed.
I've never read the comments in videos like these. It's so heartwarming to see Julian being mentioned so often and being appreciated. I hope he is well liked by his peers too. I've never met him but I'm feeling a little proud.
Ha ha apart from the guy doing the patches with one big square. I was like ‘ick, Julian would have traced that hole and cut out a tiny patch to fit just the hole’.
Her voice is absolutely terrible and only made more annoying by the low quality audio. Insider needs to get it together, either learn how to do a "tape sync" like every other publication or just don't bother.
Restorer in 2120 - "This painting was restored by some other restorers, and they for some reason decided to use water based putty, which is odd considering that now we use nano-particles to let the painting heal itself"
I wish there was a way for the artists to know how hundreds of years after their death, their works of art are still being cared for and restored to their original vision.
@@shimmyalot he's an impressive art restorer, his videos are soooooo good and he does it all by himself. he explains the whole process in great detail and especially the reason why he chose a certain method. i highly recommend ru-vid.com
@@kinstar agreed, I started watching his channel shortly after I made that comment and it became my nightly routine to watch his videos as a wind down before bed because his voice is so soothing, lol
As a future conservator i feel terror and satisfaction while watching these kind of videos... I'm in my first semester in university and I'm still learning the basics. Edit: I am in second semester and i love the university. Although we have web classes i still managed to love them. It is really interesting as a subject and it saddened me that i did know it earlier. Edit 2: It's the finals of the second semester and the university is one of the best things in my life so far. And all the subjects are really interesting as time passes by. Edit 3: Now finals of the 4th semester, one hour before art exams. This semester was the most exciting one because the subjects were amazing and all my personal life turned 180, now i feel great. I love what i do more and i get more creative every day. I love this university. Still 2 more years to go!☺️ P.s: I have to say that i still feel terror while i have to deal with works of art but I've learned that this is okay.
I'm always so amazed at how much the original varnishes can darken and yellow with time. You don't realize how much of the detail has been lost until it's gone through a restoration process like this.
She is a PROFESSIONAL. Seeing comments compering her work to anyone makes me feel ..... Pretty sure she knows her work and stuff. Lots of love for the conservator❣️❣️❣️
right lmfao it feels a little weird to see those kinds of comments. like ppl have different techniques. just bc hers might be different than what you’ve seen doesn’t mean it’s wrong 😭
I restored an original Rembrandt drawing with about two inches of damaged surface, seen the end result and the client's approval is truly rewarding to say the least, thanks for the video brought back memories of adrenaline running moments, you have a beautiful studio and a great team! Congratulations!
None of us will ever see or care. there was another comment about someone who restores and what they cared about is what the customer wanted. focus on that rather than youtubers
@@ILik3PH0T0 I've been plundering the intent of your reply but failed to see or understand the meaning of such comment, sorry! Am not the dullest tool in the shed.
Indeed. Both have their own methods and styles. Both get different types of paintings..both have different ways of doing videos and both have different education levels, experiences and knowledge. You can’t really compare them.
The patience, detailing and the skill.. And considering the pressure of being an invaluable art piece, the calm. She is incredible. Hope my child grow up well like her.
Impressive, what an outstanding amount of skill required. I wonder what means will be taken to preserve this generations defining artists a hundred years from now?
Jeez, I hate that there are people out there who keep calling themselves Baumgartner fans and keep comparing people to him in every single restoration/conservation video. It's exhausting and frankly quite tacky. The majority of us are not professionals in the field, and the little we know has been filtered through the lens of that one man. The methods he uses are neither unique to him, nor are they infallible. I don't understand how people can consider him so precious to the point of basically badgering everyone else with his name! The same way, I can't understand those who come to disparage him and his reputation. Criticism aside, some people just keep throwing shade and not stating facts as to why he's not well-regarded. Don't just dish it out, bring out the receipts. At the end of the day, his work is fully reversible.
Sara the conservator: I use a small tacking iron to iron down the edges. Baumgartner fan: So you don't have a heated vacuum table.... hmmm. But really they did an excellent job.
I want to thank you all, the Baumgartner's fan that commented on this video, for introducing me to such a genious content creator. His calmness really get to me quick. Thank you so much
Having watched Julian (Baumgartner), i was able to interpret what she was doing in much more depth and also notice differences in approach. they did an incredible job of restoration, on both that beautiful frame and the impressive portrait, which is truly captivating. i would have liked to see much more of the retouching, which is invisible to the eye - so well painted. thank you much. 🌷🌱
It's amazing how this was done...I've always wondered how you restore old paintings like that...the work looks meticulous...but you can tell it's well worth the effort by the finished product...
I'm glad that this profession has got more exposure! It is amazing how to restore one painting, there are SO MANY things to be done. And it is amazing they have a whole TEAM to do this ❤️ it shows that every single aspect is handled by a professional ❤️ Old paintings are really amazing
Just a Baumgartner fan here and I have no qualifications to say this but she did a great job :) but ngl, I’ve never appreciated Julian’s microphone this much before
What most people don’t think about is these conservators are extremely talented artists in their own right but chose to restore others work instead of creating their own! These people are artists, scientists, chemist and historians all rolled into one!
Started out sounding like she came from the same as Baungartner and the narration was almost exactly what he says. I thought she did well, but was less than please by the owner’s work. The frame looked fab and the retouching was great. 💕🐝
As a collector of porcelain and terra cotta figurines who sometimes needs restoration services, I find this fascinating. Obviously not the same techniques or technology, but still attention to detail and expertise. Thanks for sharing.
The Baumgartner fandom can be pretty toxic sometimes! As an art conservator myself, I find some of this comments so funny just for the fact that most of them come from people that watched a couple of videos and now they act like pros.
I think much of it comes from not realizing how many ways there are to skin a cat so to speak. In addition, many professionals have certain preferences on how they do things and this causes then to create a false dichotomy between right and wrong. People need to realize that the process of conserving anything is unique to each item and the demands/expectations of the client.
Honestly true. Question, genuinely what do you think of Baumgartner's conservation methods? Is he doing a fine job? The end results looks fine for me but I'm not a conservator so idk how to asses his methods.
This combination of craft, skill, and talent is perfect for my meticulous, perfectionist soul. I am in school for accounting precisely because of these characteristics.
wow! amazing work! But I can see a few wrinkles in the canvas. I thought they would treat that and make it nice and flat. But the transformation is amazing💫
If I wasn't a pharmacist, I would definitely do something with my hands; wood, jewelry, restorations... Maybe I will have my own little workshop of some kind, for fun. :)
HOW IS NO ONE COMENTING ON THE FACT THT SHE IS TEDIOUSLY DOTTING PAINT ON EVERY LITTLE WHITE SPECK ON THAT THING, WATCHING HER FACE SUCH A PAINFUL TASK HURTS, LADY HOW DO DO THAT FOR A LIVING, HOW ARE YOU STILL SANE!!!
Just purchased a painting by Curt Meyer-Eberhardt and a painting by Harry Craig Smith, through an auction. Both paintings are exciting by these notable artists. They both need cleaning and some restoration on the Smith painting. Very excited about learning more about art restoration. Thanks for the video.
This is so cool! I've always wondered how oil paintings are restored. I like all aspects of art, I've been sketching, drawing, and painting since I was just a few years old.
Just a thought, how restoration is handled different in the different arts: I'm studying architecture in Germany, and when restoring an old building a lot of the times it is actually forbidden to restore it the way, it was before. Instead it is mandatory to repair the building with elements that can clearly be distinguished from what is left from the original ones. It is done so everyone can see what is new and what is actually original. For example if a brick building was partly destroyed by an explosion, you wouldn't repair the destroyed parts with brick, but instead use wood for example. With that in mind I kinda want to see an old oil painting be restored in a way, how it would be done in Architecture. Just replace the damaged parts with a completely different artstyle.
Everyone: taking about Baumgartner Me: .....who is bamgurt... bamgurt? Notice: I am not criticizing anyone. I just don't know. If u know please tell me
Baumgartner restoration is a channel run by this guy named Julien. He is an art restorator based in the US. His videos are AMAZING. You should look him up :D
Lol imagine the previous restorer watching this. Hearing her say how bad of a job he/she did every 10 minutes. Im sure he/she gave her a thumbs down for that 😂 😂 😂
Another, other Fan of Baumgartner Restoration here, I've seen them restore so many paintings, it really is amazing! I wish there were MORE restoration videos so I could WATCH them!
I really hate when people record Zoom/Skype calls for videos. It sounds incredibly awful. Get them to record the footage on their computer and send it over.
