The Mountain Dew Game Jam was one of the most expensive failures to ever grace our humble website. What could've been a fascinating insight into the sheer creativity that goes into the creation of the video games you spend your days laying in your couch hole scratching your belly to, ended up being an absolute travesty, with a gaping hole in Polaris's pocket. Starring massive RU-vid personalities such as Jontron, Markiplier, CaptainSparklez and Angry Joe, as well as indie game developers such as Zoe Quinn, Adriel Wallick and Tom Jackson, this video essay tells a tale of greed, corporate meddling, bigotry, and enough Mountain Dew to drown a baby billy goat.

The massive difference between the jammers and actual reality game contestants is that for the most part reality show contestants are talentless no-ones whose only shot at fame is to make a mockery of themselves on television. They line up to be in the spotlight, to be manipulated and humiliated, and so long as their name is on the public lips, even if for all the wrong reasons, then everything is golden. The jammers were not those people. In fact they thought they were turning up to film a documentary, not a version of Big Brother with a side order of video games.
@Foxhood

Yeah. It genuinely seems like the producers where still believing the outdated notions that online personalities where just Wannabee-stars like in the very early RU-vid days and game developers where all just awkward socially-inept nerds. I could actually see a Game Jam reality show working. Stretch the time limit from four days to four weeks, make it a solo dev game, and throw in a few challenges. There's 96 hours in four days, so spread that out to 4 hours of dev time a day for 4 weeks. This allows for a longer shooting period, more episodes, and allows the competitions/diary rooms/whatever to not take any time away from the actual game dev.

I feel like one of the dumber things about trying to force everyone to drink specifically Mountain Dew, is that PepsiCo has water bottle brands they could have used as alternatives. It would have looked less fake and it still would have been product placement for the larger company to have Mountain Dew cans interspersed with Aquafina bottles. AND I feel like that would have potentially gotten them some sales from people that weren't going to be convinced to buy Mountain Dew regardless of their efforts.

The words "Zoe Quinn" and "professional" do not belong in the same sentence. She took $85,000 from a kickstarter she ran for a game she was "developing" and subsequently told everyone she was broke while vacationing in Tokyo.

Zoe trash talked Jon on Twitter and scammed her friends and others out of thousands to "run her own game jam" then ran away with the money blaming other people not involved with the project as the reason her game jam fell apart.

Markiplier: sexism? *Red eyes* I think not I love how he didn't say anything like no women are better but that the variation of opinions and viewpoints due to differences of experience leads to an advantage that could heighten the experience for players. And immediately followed it up with an equality statement as well. No side is better, but variations in representation is always gonna help something. He's so great

Making it so that your online content creators can't update their audience about the thing coming out so that they will actually want to see it has to be the biggest brain move of big brain moves I've ever heard of. Whoever stopped influencers influencing to ensure a wider audience appeal should get a raise.

You know, it's poetic that the team who set up this Game Jam got bought out by Disney. This was the perfect demonstration of the sh*tstorm they were getting themselves into buy selling out to a media monopoly.

I can't believe how easy it is to imagine such a better version of this. Like you said they had youtubers on each team that could have acted as their representatives and do the challenges while the rest of the teams dev'd in peace. Then the winners could get something actually cool like say bring in industry professionals to give advice or even join a team for the rest of the day and things like that. Or maybe there could be dedicated work hours where they could only work for 8 hours a day (maybe extend the competition to a week) but a basic prize could be X extra hours to keep working where their youtubers could earn them varying amounts of extra time. And that could be where all the dumb mtn dew shit is put in if you really need to.
@Lovuschka

That misrepresentation clause is great. You can essentially smear everyone and they agree to it. "Game dev was arrested for robbing a Mountain Dew store because he couldn't get enough of it. Also he had cancer, but that was healed by Mountain Dew." Sounds totally reasonable.
@DVankeuren

that last part would be illegal as it states Mt Dew can cure cancer.

There is a competition show called 'Making It' that seeks to show off the creativity and skills of the Maker community and it seems to be like the opposite of most reality competition shows. No drama, no forced stories, just pure focus on the makers and their craft. A game development focused show with the same execution as Making It would be awesome... alas, it may not be

To be fair, I kinda can understand the why they did it. Since we on RU-vid have our preferences and know many of those people, but people back at TV might not. Also having a computer lock at random times with some sort of challenge to unlock it would be a fun addition (although it would probably require adding a day to compensate for the lost time). And even branding could be done right. Now that I think about it some people in community should just gather up, and make an indie TV show - just as they do with games.
