so basicall Trumpf, Zeiss and ASML each have kind of a monopoly position and are each other's clients and should any of them fail we would have even more of a chip shortage.

Too critical to fail but monopolists hardly ever fail. Also they aren't looking to wring as many bucks out of their lead but focus on building the best product. It's a German thing (Dutchies are swamp Germans).

They are too important for that. Companies like these have almost unlimited political immunity and safety. They are critical for the whole world after all. Even the Chinese and Russians would give everything to safeguard them.

I spent part of my career designing lasers. This Trumpf laser is an incredible feat of engineering. It's astoundingly difficult to make a good UV laser.

Indeed. The source is where the real thing happens, thats where the EUV light is generated not at the Trumpf Co2 laser. Also it is a matter of time that factories like TSMC are build in the EU and US. Funding is already there.

That's not going to happen, USA is destroying Europe to defeat Russia in a economic warfare. Several german companies are closing down and opening up in other countries, namely China. This continent is going down and we'll see what happens in the winter... If Germany goes down, the whole EU goes down, that's 100% certain.

Actually the name of the company is Trumpf und not Trump, but americans might spell it in a similar way. It is the family name of the founder, who started the company 100 years ago. Why would they care about the orange man? The company is even older than the trump organization.

Great content - as always. Here's a suggestion - a video or a series on what it would take for some countries to stop competing for high-tech/military advancements/domination like this - so that all of us can live in a peaceful - collaborative world? Haven't we grown up enough as a species to ascend to such mindset? I bet - money and tradition/religion would be the key factors in overcoming a change such as this one!? What would it take for all of us to start with a clean slate - and expend efforts to better co-exist on this beautiful planet of ours?

Less weed and more practising of the idea that the world we live in is actually diverse, and not based on an observation of cultural and ethical developments made in certain parts of it. It also helps to realise that, aside from an ongoing petty war between Ukraine and Russia, most of the world is actually co-existing remarkably well these days.

Why is it, that in English speaking countries foreign brand names usually are not pronounced correctly? Trumpf wouldn't remind you of Trump, if pronounced correctly, because the u in German is completely different to the u in English. And why wouldn't this come up when researching for such a video?

The only person in the U.S. who doesn't care about shareholder value, loves owning capabilities, takes gigantic risks, and could set up companies similar to Trumpf or ASML: Elon Musk. Publicly traded U.S. companies like GE, Intel, IBM, Apple, etc, are crippled by management that focuses on maximizing shareholder value (stock buybacks, anyone?), quarterly earnings calls, and risk mitigation. Sad.

Musk may not care about shareholder value that much, but cares about his own wealth more than about western ideals in general, and human rights and free speech in particular. Don't expect Musk to save the world. His current twitter posts about the Ukraine war and Taiwan conflict show quite nicely, how he couldn't care less about the people in these countries or the war crimes committed there / going to happen there. He is simply bothered by the economic inconveniences these countries cause by not giving up their freedom silently and without resistance. He was quite excited about the idea of himself capable of facing Putin, a person much wealthier than himself, just by providing telecommunication infrastructure. Now he's all about appeasing the Chinese and Russian government, because he finally realized the inconveniences his companies face due to these conflicts.

What you describe is quite common for older companies, and you are right: Elon is (or at least was) extremely capable in setting up new risky endeavors.
