@@zeroid105 He said it right. Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea, whereas "PyeongCHang" (notice it is written slightly different) was the city in South Korea where the winter Olympics were held in 2018. A difference hard to spot due to us not being used to their phonemes.

For me, hosting the Olympic games was the best thing that happened to Rio de Janeiro. The entire port region has been renovated and is incredible. Transport was vastly improved with the expansion of the metro and the creation of a Tram that helped to revitalize the city's historic center. The Olympic village was built with private money. The Olympic park is now a public park with schools and sports classes. The stadiums are being used by local football teams. Unfortunately, only a negative image of the city is presented, which is far from the truth.

So isn't true that 5 massive stadiums were built and are hardly being used? A lot more than 5 were built so saying "stadiums are being used by local football teams" isn't justifying building 12 to use 7. That's a huge waste of money. Transport was improved for the Rio area, but how about the majority of Brazilians? How about the other cities inland that need it more.
@jonpirovsky
@jonpirovsky Месяц назад
@@markkostka6897that is incorrect information. Many of the arenas that were built were temporary - dismantled and rebuilt as public schools after the event - and the ones that remained are now part of the Brazilian Olympic training center, one of the resulting legacies of the Olympics. The two major large stadiums used for the event, the Maracana and the Olympic Stadium, are used regularly as well. Despite some hiccups - mainly due to corruption and embezzlement - the Olympic Games were largely positive for the city. Transportation in the city has been transformed with the new BRT, light rail and extended subway systems, and the new sports infrastructure really boosted the ability of the city to host events. I remember watching international news then, before the event, and seeing some ludricrous comments about "the capacity of Rio to host the event". What I found quite funny is that most of the concern focused on the number of tourists and whether Rio would be ready to host 'such a large event', instead of focusing on the Olympic infrastructure itself (the legit concern). Foreigners apparently have no clue that Rio hosts two annual events that actually attract more tourists than the Olympics itself: Rio's Carnival and New Year's Eve celebration. So dealing with the Olympics was nothing absurd to deal with.

This video is spot on: the genius of the French is their ability to deliver exceptional value for money. They’ve pulled off the least expensive Olympics in over 30 years with amazing results. The key? They didn’t build hundreds of structures specifically for the Games at outrageous costs. Instead, they focused on: 1. Leveraging existing infrastructure and transportation that already prove their daily practical use-upgrading and renovating sports venues, conference centers, trains, traffic systems, etc. 2. Integrating the Olympics into the heart of the city by temporarily transforming iconic Parisian landmarks into competition zones (like Beach Volleyball, the Grand Palais, etc) at a very low cost. 3. Assessing the sports market and building temporary structures for anything that wouldn’t find use or funding after the Games. 4. Undertaking projects like the Seine purification to create summer swimming zones for tourists. In short, the French made the Olympics cost-effective yet highly efficient. This might just be the future: hosting events in emblematic city landmarks, using temporary structures where there’s no post-Olympics demand, and renovating or repurposing existing facilities. With this approach, even countries with modest budgets could consider hosting the Olympics.

Yeah. There’s going to be practically endless demand for public transit during the games from all the tourists - this is basically the only acceptable time to do a fare hike. Natives won’t be significantly affected because it’s temporary, so they’ll only spend like twenty euro more over the whole games probably. More if they use more public transit obviously. But for the city this will double the earnings from the tourists on transit, which is money that can be funneled back into the massive Grand Paris Express plans to help speed up construction.
@addisonbaker8211
@addisonbaker8211 Месяц назад
Paris expects 500,000 people daily to be attending the events. Assuming 2/3 take public transit (which I think is likely, because there’s no way Paris has 500,000 extra cars for rent sitting around), that’s 660,000 euro a day extra generated, for a total of 11.2 million, JUST from the games themselves. Tourists wishing to take the opportunity outside competition times to visit the rest of the city will generate even more trips. I think 15-20 million extra generated by doubling fares is a reasonable number, which isn’t much on the scale of Paris’ expansion plans’ cost, but is regardless still a quite large amount of money, especially compared to running public transit for FREE during the Olympics.

@@vinny7114 So, basically, there are very few abandoned structures in Rio, especially because it was an edition that involved many temporary structures. What gave the impression of abandonment was mainly the delay in dismantling and reconverting some structures. Everything in games today in poor condition includes: - BMX Center, Olympic Tennis Center, Rio Municipal Velodrome (Which is undergoing renovations). All other structures that remain are in use and very well maintained. The big problem with the Rio games is much more that they were a tool for a very violent process of real estate speculation. But this is also happening in Paris, as it happened in London, or in Barcelona back then.

I’ve been critical of previous summer Olympic cities because it was obvious they were using the event as an excuse to improve the cities infrastructure, which is the reason corruption happens and costs skyrocket. There should be a rotation of cities that can host the Olympics thus minimizing cost…Paris would be one of those cities for me. An Olympic event in Paris once every 20yrs as oppose to once every 100yrs. All that said, I’m definitely watching the games.

Paris reinvented The Games by having an opening ceremony with a budget of two bucks. The most embarrasing thing on tv I've ever seen. And by having crazy ambitions like expecting contestants swimming in a very polluted river. Paris also reinvented the games by having a complete failure to deliver the infrastructure promised like new train lines. The first time in over 48 years this has happened.

man do be mad, it was however an objectively interresting opening ceremony, your opinion to think it was embarrasing, I'm however quite glad the event represented france past and present history, an history of revolution inclusion and had the balls to make a parody of the cène, even if as we all know christians can't take a parody without being mad, christians or any other religion I'd say even

The parody mocked Christianity, and the religion means a lot in the lives of billions of people around the world. It is not inclusion if you mock a major religion of the world. They showed a naked man with his balls exposed on live TV, which was very inappropriate because there were millions of children worldwide who watched the opening ceremony. My theory is that every country that participates should put an agreed amount/percentage into a kitty every Olympics, and there needs to be a ceiling on costs, with the priority being the sports, not the opening ceremony. Another option is to have a fixed Olympic set up somewhere, with all countries chipping in to maintain it and one country each time nominated to set up the 'flavour' of it.

Transporting the athletes there shouldn't even need a full extra flight... So the environmental impact shouldn't be any larger, or barely, than if they didn't held the competition there. Flights to Tahiti and local hosting accommodations are extremely pricey, which de facto severely limits the number of Olympic visitors in Tahiti to barely more than usual. It's not like they'd transport millions to the other side of the Earth. I'm not even sure if there's 100 or 150 people including athletes and staff. They'll probably group everyone on the same flight combo. Anyway, Tahiti would not allow an invasion of tourists for Olympic surfing events, they are really restrictive in the number of flights and tourists they receive, keeping the destination as exclusive as possible, even during the Olympics.

There is no AC because it increases the cost. Just look at the directors, etc they have AC and let them turn on in their cars You all trying to put under the rug the issues of this OG should be ashamed because you are just pushing and applauding work without salary, no true environment help (as athletes are coming with their AC too) Hilarious

Making it clear upfront: I absolute adore Paris, and France. Gorgeous country, vibrant city. However, Its already clear that these games will be chaotic, starting with the rail havoc caused to visitors, the endless list of diversions in the city to accommodate everything around the attractions, where the right thing would be to have proper facilities to host each game's categories. Getting some of the aquatic sports and athletes into swimming in a river with fecal coliforms? You gotta be joking us. Comparing these games, to past games like Rio and London, honestly, is beyond me. The real name for this video is RECALQUE. Only Brazilians will understand. Go learn! 😂 Last, but not least, let's see how much the public transport tickets will return to pre-olympics price, so residents don't end with the burden. Not to mention the eviction of refugees to fill up the hotel rooms at extorting prices. Ppl are calling this to the be "inclusion" games.. it couldn't be far from that. 1000€ tickets to watch any attraction? Spare me.

"reinventing" lol so far two athletes got sick after having to compete in the dirty waters of the seine (not to mention that training has been postponed more then once because of the conditions of the water), people have complained about not having enough/proper food in the olympic village, others were left behind for hours after training in the skateboarding facilities and some had to go back to their dorms by skate because the bus broke down, some of the tennis athletes had to use ice to cool down because of how hot the bus was and they weren't allowed to open the windows, just this week another athlete decided to sleep in some kind of square in the village because the room was too hot. a lot of athletes from a certain delegation decided to go to hotels because they had to share a single bathroom between 10 people. I love the olympics but its just shameful how we have to accept everything as perfect, smart and beautiful because it comes from an european country. you can cut down on costs, I agree with that, but not giving proper structure to people that have been training for this moment for years is just shameful. and I didn't even say a word about the messy opening ceremony, how people paid thousands to be able to see just a few minutes of boats going down the river, in the rain (not just the ones that wanted to watch it, but all the athletes, the press, everyone).
