How Parkland Changed School Safety

As the young survivors of the Florida school shooting keep up their marches and walkouts for gun control, the NRA is pushing back with its own go-to narrative: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
In the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, lots of schools seemed to agree with that approach and moved to put more "good guys" in the classroom. This week, Gianna Toboni sees firsthand how some teachers are taking up arms and explores the deep divisions in America that make stopping these mass shootings seem nearly impossible.

As someone from the Netherlands, the idea of allowing people to have and use firearms is fucking insane. Why do people just not see that the REAL way to stop bad guys with guns is to take away those guns? Adding more weapons to the equation doesn't fix ANYTHING in the long term, it just makes things worse! Of course you don't want your children to be slaughtered by a school shooter, so make sure the shooting doesn't even happen in the first place! Start restricting guns, making them illegal in the future, and offer better mental health services to students so they won't even pick up a gun in the first place! I'm not american so I shouldn't even have an opinion on this. So instead of giving you my opinion I'm just going to talk about how banning guns affected my home country. Here are our lessons learned: - Banning guns DOES NOT stop gun violence. Criminals will get their guns either legally or illegally. Lawful citizens simply won't get any. - Banning guns will not make guns disappear. It will only create a black market for them (where, again, criminals will be able to get them) - Possessing a gun and knowing that you can use it to legally defend yourself and your family gives you peace of mind. On the other hand not having the means to defend yourself makes you feel vulnerable, exposed, like a victim, basically. - If bad guys know that regular people don't carry guns, it will work as an incentive as they will know that the chances of getting away with their crime will be higher ('cause people won't be defending themselves) - There's a bigger picture: Guns are a preventive measure against tyrannic governments. This is no joke. Just to give you some context I am from a country with one of the highest homicide rates (for gun violence) in the american continent (yes, despite the gun ban). Currently there's a dictatorship there and although about 90% of the people absolutely hate it we're simply unable to defend ourselves. We have a motto for it actually: "Rocks can't beat bullets" because rocks are all our protesters can use against the regime's forces. Rocks and courage, but that simply won't cut it...

You seem to be an idealist. You want a utopia where no one is evil and no one wants to murder. But you see, even though we all want this, this kind of world would never exist in real life. There will always be bad people as long as there are people. It is human nature. Now we can do things to minimize the chances of mass murder happening, such as addressing the root causes that drive some people to want to commit mass murder in the first place. After all, the rise in mass murders is but one symptom of the increase in mental illness, and our society would be vastly improved with better mental healthcare. But even if we somehow got rid of all insanity, there will still be some evil people who just want to kill. And gun control won’t be much help if that’s what you’re suggesting, as plenty of mass murders have been done without guns and with much higher casualties (OKC bombing, Kyoto arson attack, Daegu subway fire, Kunming knife attack, etc.). All in all, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for the worst. You can hope for the best, but still be ready for the worst case scenario. Even if there is a one in a billion chance of something bad happening, I would still not take any chances when it comes to safety.

US has ignored lots of problems that are helping mass shootings happening... Except this doesn't help your argument as all as this just proves that handguns, the most basic firearm you can own, are incredibly lethal by themselves. Also, assault rifle kills may be relatively low, but they have high involvement in spree killings with high bodycounts (e.g. the Las Vegas shootings). As an aside, the argument that armed teachers will protect students falls flat when you consider a) de-facto private security goes way beyond the purview of education and teaching contracts, b) there is no practical way to ensure regular training (or compel a teacher to be armed!), c) they're forced between constant carry risking accidents/theft due to negligence or constant storage which defeats the point, d) it compels shooters to actively target teachers, forcing aggression rather than evasion, and thus e) there is no guarantee friendly fire from teachers/law enforcement won't occur due to escalated conflict. And these are just the issues I can think of...

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun." The biggest problem with this, is that good and bad is subjective. One group of people think one idea is good, and another group will think it is bad. As the idea gains more followers on each side, eventually we will all have guns, and great belief in our set of ideas. This is a very dangerous combination, when just about everyone can get a gun, because once the shots start popping off from the crazies who have certain ideas, and the other side fires to defend themselves, there can be a cascading series of events. Think about if this happened in a protest. This is the real danger of the laws of public bearing of arms in protests, the vitriol of modern society, and the growing unwavering belief of the different subsets in combination.

From Virginia Tech to sandy hook to Columbine there was one common tread, a human pulled the trigger. Start with the real issue.

These kids are so young and unfortunately they had to go through some really terrible shit, but they need to realize that in America, there's literally more guns then people; banning guns would literally just screw over the law abiding citizen because the bad guys will still find way's to get guns. I live in NJ a state with some of the strictest gun laws and recently we had a shooting as well and no one could defend themselves against the shooters besides law enforcement. In my state you can literally buy an illegal gun for 100-200 and you can damn well bet that most the bad people have em. Banning gun's wont just magically make em all disappear. Now keep in mind i'm not saying we do nothing, i'm trying to say that this issue is really complicated and it's not as simple as just saying ban all the guns.

Christopher Bravo you think adults are any less vulnerable to factors that cause mental/emotional disturbance which leads to the majority of these shootings. Both of my parents are teachers and I see how stressful and mentally taxing their jobs are. Especially when you are stuck in a room for 7 hours with a bunch of children who openly express negative things to you. You don’t think that for *some* individuals, the presence of a firearm when under extreme mental stress may lead them to see it as a way to threaten or lash out?

first last how frequently though? This makes things increasingly complicated because of all the time and money and paperwork it would take. Self Defence: FMJ ammo is not often used in self-defense situations due to the risk of the bullet striking an unintended target. It is a small-arms projectile, it can be used in concealed carry guns. Hollow point bullets are better for shoot to kill and self-defense situations. So always go with Hollow Point ammo for self-defense. Shooting & Rang Practice: Full Metal Jacket ammo is good for shooting & rang practice. As full metal jacket ammo is cleaner and stronger than hollow point. So there is no risk of unintended impact further down the range. Hunting: As for hunting Hollow point bullets are the best option as compare to FMJ Ammo. The hollow point is primarily used for hunting big game at long range as it expands on impact and sends that expanded bullet deep into the target, hopefully killing or incapacitating it instantly. FMJ ammo performs very well ballistically, and don't lose accuracy or speed in your weapon. Quick feeding: FMJ Ammo feeds quickly and efficiently. Hollow point ammo is slightly less efficient in this category.

In Canada, there are as much guns per people then in the United States. Yet, the last mass school shooting I’ve heard of happened before I was born. So what's the difference? I'll tell you what's the difference: the type of guns and the mentality around it. The great majority of guns in circulation are hunting rifles, heavy, slow and made for mid-long range. Nearly all assault rifles accumulate dust in collections and museums. Here, a gun isn't considered a extension of a person's freedom, but a tool of *dissuasion* in case of threats or attacks. Also, we rarely see guns in public, so it raises questions when we see one. Gun control has an indisputable impact on the number of shootings. It's not about banning all guns, it's about restricting the relight type of guns.

@@ironforge8896 First off you cannot carry guns on your person in the UK. Handguns are banned and self defense shootings are rare because of the fact that those actions are not condoned by law. Guns are expensive to get in the illegal markets in the uk because of the legal laws in place. Knives are more common because you can pick one up from the kitchen and have one on you at all times. If you are stopped and caught with one you won't be thrown in prison. Guns are used by the gangs over there usually during drive by shootings on rival gang members. Still you are more commonly to be stabbed because many young gang members cannot afford the prices of a gun off of the street. This is why the knife is the weapon of choice because it can be on your person at all times for little to no money and if you are caught more than likely you won't be thrown in prison.
