You are in the middle of your cross-country paragliding flight. You've made an unfortunate decision, and with every passing minute, with every action you take, things seem to get worse and worse. Sounds familiar? Stay calm, keep trying, but most importantly - do not lose your patience!

I like the "what would you do?" questions at decisive ppints in the flight. 😊

Great video! I'd also love to have a video explaining how to plan a flight and what tools you use to understand how the conditions will be. Its always so hard when multiple websites give very widely different forecasts

Well, there are many videos available where pilots explain their flight planning and weather check. I don't have any special approach, and I use the same tools everybody uses. Do you think yet another video about the same stuff could be helpful?

It seems you have good talent explaing things, aren't you a teacher? Loud thinking in crux point "what should I do here, what are possibilities" and why you have choosen the path, is a gold.(it does not matter wheter you were really thinking it in the moment or you did it in post analysis)

Thanks for your feedback! No, I'm not a teacher, but I love to analyze things thoroughly. Those comments in the video do actually resemble my thought process in the flight - I wanted to show a "real experience". It's always easier to decide watching a recording. Usually, there's more stress and less time when it happens live 😅

Thank you for watching! When I cut these videos, I sometimes discover much better options I could have tried. So this is helpful for myself as well!

Thanks for your detailed thinking process. Very helpful for pilots progressing in XC flying like me. I'm really looking forward to watch more content like this. Thank you

I love these kind of thought process videos so when your pilot you can stay in front of the paraglider you've got to be in front of the aircraft not behind reacting you have to be in front taking actions and making decisions or you're going to get a lot of trouble.

Most useful video I've seen for a while. Great editing with the 360 camera, avoiding too much of the wide open field of view. Thanks.

Nice climb out! I refer to the mountain you first arrived at as "the island" because it's big and sticks out from the flats in front of it and the bigger terrain behind it. It's one of my favorite places to fly past in Colombia. Have also toplanded and relaunched from different spots on it a handful of times :)

Quite educational, and really well edited! I take that as motivation to not chicken out too early. It is worth noting to beginners though that you should not lose your safe landing options out of sight while trying hard (and patiently!) to continue your flight. I've never been to Colombia though, might be a non issue there terrain-wise.

Excellent video! Reminds me I need to be more patient! One question: it looks like they valley you ended up in only had a dirt road, weren’t you concerned about retrieval? That would have been quite a big hike out. Many times this thought limits my moves
@dymanoid
@dymanoid 4 месяца назад
In Valle del Cauca you have to take that risk if you want to fly big triangles. This area here wasn't the worst, there are so many really remote areas where you might need all day to get out. If I had landed near that dirt road in the valley, I would have walked 1 hour to get to a roadway, which isn't so bad. But I know the feeling you are talking about very well - sometimes I also choose a more retrieval-friendly option, which ends up in smaller routes than would have been possible.

Where do you think that last thermal was triggering from?
@dymanoid
@dymanoid 3 месяца назад
It's hard to tell. It was probably some kind of convergence caused by air coming down from the hill, from the back of the big ridge, and from the flatlands. The terrain feature just below me could also be directing the air movement to the highest point where the hot air bubbles began to rise. Anyway, I wasn't expecting to find a thermal there.
@thisisyol
@thisisyol 4 месяца назад
could you elaborate a bit what you mean by saying sidewinds destroys hillside thermals?
@dymanoid
@dymanoid 4 месяца назад
From my observations, if there is a noticeable wind blowing (almost) parallel to the slope, chances are really high that you won't find any usable lift on that slope. Especially if the ridge has no spines, so it is more or less smooth. The hot air has to accumulate to form a big enough bubble, but the parallel wind just blows the air away. Even if a bubble does form and begins to rise, the wind simply pushes it away, preventing the surrounding air from rising with that initial bubble - so no real thermal develops. This isn't always the case, but most of the time this is what I observe.
