Highlights how corporate-profit-driven, competitive western society has demolished the sense of community, demolished our small towns, glorified the individual and material success so we can all suffer in isolation. Community and collaborative economies are the way out.
"The development of Individualism during the last three centuries is explained by the efforts of the individual to protect himself from the tyranny of Capital and of the State. For a time he imagined, and those who expressed his thought for him declared, that he could free himself entirely from the State and from society. “By means of money,” he said, “I can buy all that I need.” But the individual was on a wrong tack, and modern history has taught him to recognize that, without the help of all, he can do nothing, although his strong-boxes are full of gold." -Pëtr Kropotkin, Conquest of Bread almost 120 years ago.. we have been on this track for a while and something needs to be done to awake people.
This is fascinating, just watching these people who have nothing and don’t even know what depression feels like, and watching people in la who have everything and contemplating suicide everyday 🤯
In Indonesia the youth is depressed but most people are depressed in greenland because there is nothing to do in greenland and you get tired of talking to the same people
Sometimes when I watch these documentaries and I see how they describe poverty I'm like..🤔. I mean over here the little we have is enough. You hardly even see someone sad just because he doesn't have some particular amount of money
I'm trying to thing of a word "depression" in the few African languages (within Bantu) I speak, I'm struggling to come up with a word, other than creating new words. Thank you for the awesome and beneficial documentary.
every human being is prone to depression, we just call it by other names. African cultures have more social /spiritual support thus they are able to withstand it
Very, very intersting take on this subject. Enjoyed this. In light of social distancing and social bubbles and mask wearing etc due to Corona you can see why depression and anxiety is through the roof now. 100% increase amongst young people in my city, I heard today. You don't have to be a PhD in Anthropology or Psychology to know we need to part of groups. That is our innate design. It is not good for man to be alone. (Genesis 2:18).
"Depression is...a state where you are stuck between living, and then, dying. You are stuck between death, and life." Fascinating... Rings true, for me. Beautiful souls; men and women. Ubuntu!
Wow, this is interesting: She says (30:44) in Ewe the same word for breath is used for spirit. In Zulu (South Africa), breath (umphefumulo or umoya) can mean spirit in English (our languages have the same source) 👌 Another example: When referring to someone who is brave (in Yoruba), u say they are or have a liver (some Bantu languages have similar expression).
In ghana there is no time for depression, it does not exist there, your surrounded by too many people, in Europe its constantly work, pay bills, home and literally no life. We look after the old, there is a lot going on so you cannot be depressed
Hmm, how was this romanticizing poverty? There were very few references to their wealth .. and even showed problems with having too little money. What they showed us was different mentality towards social relations and communities and how they perceive themselves more as a part of a whole and how it affects their thinking. Do you think that can only happen when people are poor? Does wealth cause people to cut social ties and become independent and lonely... if that is true then wealth indeed doesn't bring happiness.
