In my physics textbook, it shows the charges as the opposites; the dark area retains the positive charge and then the toner is given a negative charge.

FreezeFire it's because this is analog, digital machines are opposite, but this isn't an exact description either, so don't worry about it.

Tonor is negatively charged. While there are positive charges on the drum coated selenium and drum have Aluminium which is negatively charged. When lighr exposed ,except dark areas every charge become neutral and positive charges left on the areas where light couldn't fall.Then tonor which is highly negative attract with the positive charge on the drum and copy it to the blank page which go through the further process as explained by you. However, this diagrammatic view helps alot to understand the whole mechanism.

Everything looks good but one thing I didnot understand is, how the paper is given a strong electrical charge. Paper is a non conducing material, right? I feel the paper is rolled over the drum which has toner particle stuck to it. It will transfer the toner particles on to the paper as it rolls over the drum. The toner particles would be wet at this time and as the paper goes through a hot section, it would dry. That is why the papers are a bit hot when they come out.

Yuya fujikawa it is cuz the positive and negative charges neutralize each other.
