We take millions of photographs. How are all of our snaps affecting our eyes, brains, and bodies? WIRED Senior Editor Peter Rubin looks at the ways that selfies can distort our self perception, shoots with a pro photographer, and examines the way that all those images are affecting our moods and memory.

99.9% of phone buyers are not photographers, so they will never understand what 35mm or 24mm lens at various distances does to the face as Distortion- "Bulging out effect in the middle of the photo" Apps make photography seem less technical than it is & the untrained eye will never see a difference. "A lady once tried to argue that the photos she took with her iPhone of another photo, with even the Pink Case casting a hue via the flash, was better than a $3000 DSLR Camera $2000 lens & $4000 worth of lighting."

I’m not a professional photographer, but I’m learning a lot about its technical procedures and gears. The thing is, nowadays, thanks to digital photography, people don’t think about the composition of the image before snapping a picture. They just go straight for the shot and repeat it as many times it is necessary until they’re satisfied.

I like landscape photograph, it gives me most of the time a reason to go out, hike around and taking pictures of cool stuff and I make more sport since I started making landscape photographing. I just have an old Canon 450D, 2 kind of cheap lenses and some filters, but most of the time the pictures aren‘t the goal. When someone says that they find one Cool, I‘m so happy, it‘s something you made yourself and getting appreciation for this is the best ting ever.

You could just talk to a photographer about images and then a psychologist/counselor about self-image. The dude specializes in cutting people open, not understanding the mind. He's smart enough to learn some things, but not specialized enough to tell us everything.
@jeremiahwat1
@jeremiahwat1 5 лет назад
@@rthomp62 In regards to a field or specific subject. I can talk to you about biology, but I can't talk to you about how to perform heart surgery. The word everything in this context relates to depth of a subject not random aspects of life.
@jeremiahwat1
@jeremiahwat1 5 лет назад
@@rthomp62 Robert Thompson No. He's not wrong, but he's making it overcomplicated and missed explaining the vital point that a cellphone camera is known as a wide angle lense. Wide angles are designed to have a wider view of a scene but bend the image slightly to get it. It's like being in a carnival fun house. You have mirrors bent on different ways to reflect a distorted image that you know is distorted. You don't know with your phone because the effect is less. The producers of the video already knew this answer because they use cameras on a regular basis. It also shows in their writing of the video because they mention the comparison between landscapes and selfies at the beginning of the video. Another thing, the image feature of bending an image back into place like the doctor did is called lense correction. It's a common tool used in photo editing programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, Gimp, & Lightzone. The producer was using an app that did all those "calculations" in the video. What they should have done was introduce a psychologist to explain the emotional intelligence aspect of using a distorted lense on your face. Teach people how their emotional well-being is being damaged when you have a distorted view of yourself.

Saying "selfies" per se distort is a bit misleading. It's the close range. Strange that this isn't common knowledge. It's readily apparent when taking pictures of things at different distances, and is the main reason selfie sticks - abominations though they may be - were invented.

@@zephyrxcyrus I can't speak for darktable, but Lightroom is only correcting lens distortion effects (like an unwanted fisheye). If it's really about photography, there's almost 200 years of history and evolution that should be taken into account. Also, you really only spoke to one photographer? and he's a LANDSCAPE photographer? Why not seek out a technical teacher at an art school? @Graham Smith photography is the art of taking photos that tell a story, and it has rules like the rule of thirds, rule of odds, white space and so on. Selfies are used to simply appease the ego of the person who took the photo. The phone has a wide angle lens. Wide angle lenses have a barrel distortion, what it is photographed closer apears much bigger. That's why their heads/noses are much bigger in their selfies. :D Any photographer knows this. You generally use wide angle lenses for landscapes, not for portraits. The problem is that most consumers don't know what a wide, normal or telephoto lens is all about.
