I know having to explain that a pardon works if you let the pirate keep the money should be self explanatory, but I've seen popular media like Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag say nah they get no money. I sure as shit wouldn't take a pardon if I'm immediately going into poverty as a result.

I may simply not be aware if there is one, but after hearing this I'm very surprised there isn't a movie or show about early pirates who had been giving all these things to basically retire, and being called upon to hunt new pirates as the golden age progressed. Considering the trope of once a pirate always a pirate, I'd definitely pay to see an older, wiser, retired pirate take on the new guard simply because sedentary life just isn't for them. And no matter how it ends it'd be worth the adventure
@WritingFighter
@WritingFighter Год назад
Not exactly this, but I am writing a [Fantasy] novel about pirates who, as privateers worked for a governor, but when died and the next took over, for political reasons he refused to uphold their charter or allow them to trade freely in his territory. So they kidnap one of his daughters and hold her for ransom in exchange for renewing the charter or at least pardoning them and giving them a free trading license. Most of the story is about the economic and supply hardships of being a pirate.
@seanfoltz7645

It's a good premise for a show, but as far as RL goes, you would only see this among the officers as the life of any sailor was rough enough that disease, on the job injuries, malnutrition and all of the other abuse done to their bodies both onboard and during shore leave meant that rank and file sailors could only stay in that career for so long before they were physically incapable of doing their jobs anymore.
@BlueJayWaters
@BlueJayWaters Год назад
@seanfoltz7645 granted life was much harsher back then, considering my time in the Navy when 20 year olds had back problems that put 50 year olds to shame, I'm certain a lot of sailors and pirates worked regardless lol

Not politically correct to talk about bad things Muslims were doing throughout history as that would destroy the narrative that it's the religion of peace and us Western nations are the problem. Take 9/11 for instance - some folks like to say that it was our fault for attacking them first, but what those folks either don't know or don't bother sharing is that Islam started the fight when the Barbery pirates made unprovoked attacks on American ships less than a decade after we won our independence. That's where the verse from the Marine song comes from - to the shores of Tripoli - as our ships went out and kicked Barbery butt, with us invading their capital and conquering it - that was the first time the American flag was flown in victory over foreign soil.

@seanfoltz7645

The problem with privateers turning into pirates was that the initial batch were all privateers who were fighting for king/queen and country - that's why there were so few Dutch pirates - because the Dutch privateers were all former military and patriots who had been fighting for Dutch independence, thus once their goal was achieved, they went back to being soldiers/merchants. Privateers shifting to outright piracy occurred as wars dragged on and the leaders of the countries the pirates were from were willing to turn a blind eye to their behavior so long as they limited their predations to enemy countries. This is when you started seeing more individuals who became pirates who were only in it for the loot and couldn't care less who their victims were. This is also when the pirates started getting more brutal and even surrendering without fleeing or fighting could still result in countless beatings, random torture, rapes and deaths on the victim ship. Once there was no longer open warfare between the European nations, there was no need for privateers, plus, there was the problem of privateers and outright pirates preying upon any ship - even their home country. As such, the hunting dogs which had served the crowns of Europe were now rabid dogs who attacked everyone, thus they needed to be put down, so they were.

11:37 Maybe paying the former pirates in booze would get them to work. Give them a modest amount in the morning to get them started and then the rest at the end of their work day. Although this would probably require observation of their work ro make sure they didn't waste the day waiting for their evening booze.

Caribbean Pirates were dealt with, but I wonder if there would be a resurgence of piracy in the future ~ unstable economies, wars.... Just look at Somalia or the South China Sea, pirates are only controlled because of nations having the resources to patrol... what if these resources are depleted?

@@doomer849He does have videos on this. It's 1am and I have work tomorrow so I am falling asleep, but essentially their goal wasn't to kill their targets, but to scare them into submission. They'd shoot their cannons to damage the ships (not sink them, they would shoot above the water line due to the angle of the cannons and to hopefully just steal and/or sell the ship). They'd also initially engage at a distance with muskets, specifically targeting officers, captains, and other high-value targets. When boarding, if necessary, they'd use swords and axes, as well as pistols. This would be relatively rare, though. Many targets would surrender simply at the sight of a pirate flag being flown, and the vast majority of the rest would surrender after musket volleys. They would also approach and use psychological warfare if targets didn't immediately surrender, i.e. singing songs, screaming insults, "going crazy" to intimidate their targets. It was always more profitable (not to mention safer) to simply scare targets into submission, rather than have to actually fight them. And, as another commenter pointed out, the majority of pirates were essentially "thugs" and basic thieves, not professionally-trained fighters, with the exception of former navy sailors.
@doomer849
@doomer849 Год назад
@@ao1778 thats a really good explination thank you for taking the time to write this brother
@ao1778
@ao1778 Год назад
@@doomer849 also, the most common pirate attacks were conducted in small canoe-like boats (with sails, however) called piraguas or pirogues, rather than the large ships that are often portrayed in the media. When raiding on piraguas, pirates would attack their targets from a distance with gunfire and board the ships after they would have surrendered. So, in answer to your question: no, they were not professional swordsmen and the vast majority of them preferred to absolutely avoid melee combat altogether if possible.

KAAAApers, with a "german a" in dutch...interestingly, while catholic flemish privateers and the dutch were mortal enemies during the 80 years war, the french became a mutual enemy in the second half of the 17th century. but the privateers of the city of Dunkirk worked for the french after their city and the western half of the flemish county fell to france (Jean Bart).... business is business after all, nothing personal ;) the privateers of Ostend and Nieuwpoort were on the dutch-english side during the wars of Augsburg and spanish succession.
