Photo-Realism, it's something a lot of CG films strive to attain, but Pixar has pushed the limits and perfected this technique.

Yeah this is not a secret technique, nor is it even slightly unique to Pixar. PBR has been used in the 3D field for over a decade. By that I mean that it was the new hotness back when Unreal Engine 3 was released, and we're at UE5 now. This is honestly such a weird way to clickbait people into watching a topic that's been covered hundreds of times on RU-vid alone.

While that's actually PBR, using different maps for faking height and roughness information is called Deferred Rendering. PBR is just a relatively new way of using it, in which every pixel information is based on actual physical values. Previously we used diffuse maps with baked-in shadows and ambient occlusion for the color channel. Now, with PBR only the color is needed in the albedo map. The shader takes care of the reflectance/transmittance and some self-shadowing depending on the color and interacting with the roughness and normal channels.
@santripta
@santripta Год назад
Doesn't deferred rendering only talk about the fact that lighting is done only on the unlit output once per light, instead of on every object for every light like in forward rendering? You can have multiple maps in forward as well, it isn't limited to deferred rendering.
@roteira
@roteira Год назад
@@santripta yep. It applies to forward too. Deferred and forward render have nothing to do with PBR.

I know we all have to fight the algorithm a bit but Blenderusers specifically put out so many recycled and clickbaited videos that its honestly very exausting. Lets be real: this ist just a basic overview of pbr and a couple specific tips - which are all fine - but nothing I wouldn't know already (and Ideas everyone, not just pixar, utilizes). I kinda miss the days where all the videos maybe werent flashy, but at least you knew what to expect instead of having to watch 10 minutes of content everyone and their grandmother has made Videos about already. I mean other than that good editing I guess and the Video was well made. Just wish you'd have been more honest with the framing
@YouTubsel
@YouTubsel Год назад
All very good info. I'd make the point that the knowledge about PBR materials and the fact that Pixar uses some insane Houdini simulations alone is not the actual secret to how pixar looks. It's how they dial in their textures, how they color grade their scenes and how they mix their real life and stylized asstes. Thinking that Dreamworks doesn't know about PBR or simulations is just not true. Even without having worked at the company you can see that they KNOW about it. Their style is just very different and that is the actual secret.

Yo, PBR is about the shaders, not the textures. Sure the textures need to be slightly different to facilitate the correct usage of PBR shaders, but the real star is the shader math. This is because the PBR system focuses on conservation of energy with respect to real world properties. It's a shader system that encourages material values that are within a plausible range, and then handles correct levels of energy (or in this case, light) reflection depending on the values given. Previously spec gloss was a cluster-fuck in this regard, with artists just choosing what "looks right". With PBR there is an actual emulation of BSDF, which has some associated real life values that we can measure! THIS is why Disney developed PBR, and why it's taken over the industry. Real world measurable realism.
@filipporomani6038
@filipporomani6038 Год назад
This! I'm all for simplifying explanations to make hard concepts easy to understand, but what he says in the video is outright wrong. We used multiple textures to define material properties before PBR, and today almost all rendering softwares use their implementation of it. It's definitely not what makes Pixar's materials stand out. It's about great artists who know their stuff on the texturing and lookdev side and as with everything, there isn't just one thing that makes it look great. Otherwise I could just combine a couple of roughness maps, a normal map with a displacement and I would be a Pixar level artist.
@HarlequiNQB
@HarlequiNQB Год назад
Thank you for commenting this. PBR isn't just controlling different aspects of the material with textures - we could do that before - it specifically references the underlying math of the lighting simulating actual physics; as you note, this is primarily focused on conservation of energy, and the understanding that everything is reflective. Ugh, I should do a video about it... oh, I already did, but to be fair it isn't aimed at total beginners. :)
@Art_911
@Art_911 Год назад
PBR stands for Physically Based Rendering. Not the textures. Yes, it's the textures in combination with the PBR shaders. You can have all the right textures, but without the right shaders, you can't achieve how the light "physically" gets absorbed in rendering. Most all 3d Render engines out there now use this.

@clairearan505 Год назад
Great video! One of the things I think people might be interested in is a very big difference between current PBR materials and the material models of the past, and that difference is that PBR materials are energy conserving. Without going too deep into it, energy conservation means that no light energy hitting that material is destroyed, and no new light is created. That's part of the explanation for why scenes using PBR materials tend to look so cohesive. In the past, if you wanted a material to be energy conserving, you kinda had to do the work yourself to make it happen. And even then, that material might only look right under certain lighting conditions. It's worth reading up on physically based rendering if you wanna know more.

You are wrong about displacement - the reason you have subdiv modifier for it to work is to have geometry, the reason you don't see it in solid mode - cos adaptive subdiv only supported in Cycles(as in Experimental feature set of Cycles). It is a real geometry, generated on the fly in Cycles renderer based on your height(displacement) map. Also PBR is a shader, not a "set of textures". It works and is "PBR" even without any textures plugged in. Next - normal map tells shader how different parts of surface should react to a light with a given direction(every pixel in normal map is a vector3 direction, representing in which direction this pixel is "rotated"). Also referring to Pixar it will be more accurate to mention BRDF, which is actually more of a "principled" and less "physical", to give artists more control over shader and be more intuitive, even if it crosses a line of "strictly physically accurate" shading.
@overdev1993
@overdev1993 Год назад
Calling PBR a workflow is a reeeeeal stretch. It's just a way how something is rendered and what textures/parameters it needs, it's not a workflow at all. a workflow would be creating a PBR material through nodes in Blender or using Substance Painter in order to get the material down.
@Powerbyte7
@Powerbyte7 Год назад
I think calling it a workflow is fine, PBR is about mirroring real life lighting, that's the core principle. It's really more of a concept that's exercised in various ways. Creating a renderer that uses real world values is PBR, using real world values for a texture is PBR, measuring IRL lighting from a camera is to use it in 3D is PBR, etc.

I understand that a lot of these points being made are oversimplified in order to explain in layman’s terms, but I think it’s useful to point out that PBR itself is not the system of rendering materials using multiple texture maps; it’s just one of multiple rendering models that do the same thing. PBR is a rendering model that uses metallic and roughness maps to approximate the reflectivity of the surface of a material in a more realistic way than the specular and gloss maps such as the comparatively simple blinn-phong model.

Nah, it's not "PBR texture". Everybody use that. You have way more detailed and advanced texture sets for creatures in ILM, MPC, or Weta pipeline to name a few. Not to mention Disney CG remakes like Lion king, Jungle book, Aladdin, etc. Even competing animation studios like illumination, netflix, sony, disney's own animation, Warner Animation , paramount animation, BLur, or now defunct bluesky are pretty on line. Pixar first perfected carefully picked color schemes, lighting setups, specific character and props design stylization, and above all, distinctive animation that sit on top of their innovative (for its specific time) simulations of hair, fur, water, cloth, and scattering. Nothing of which would have any meaning, if they didn't relied on roaster of great directors and storytelling.

This is a great video, you did a good job breaking down PBR in an understandable way. Also, what's the source of the clip at 6:44 in the antique shop?

no offence, textres do goa long way,but lighting is what sells it, and colour. the diff between these two woodys isnt textures, its lighting. you slap a backlight on left woody, and put the backround out of focus, do a bt of colour grading and it would e the same.
