How Powerful Was Hiruzen Sarutobi? 

the biggest issue with the third hokage was his inaction. he failed to act in regards to the uchiha clan, orochimaru, and danzo which lead to major issues later on. including but not limited too the extermination of the uchiha clan, the use of edo tensai in the 4th great ninja war, a lack of anbu support during pains attack on the leaf village, sasuke leaving the leaf village, itachi leaving the leaf village and more.

@@youcanthandlemyname7393 He did not fail with the Uchiha. Why does everyone say this? He sent Shisui to deal with the Uchiha, but DANZO betrayed him. After Shisui was killed, he didn't have much a choice. He couldn't send the Uchiha away, that would force the Uchiha to strike with their coup.

@@tonycole1286 and whos fault was it that danzo had power in the leaf village and was able to betray hiruzen like that multiple times? dont forget it was hiruzen that made danzo the leader of the foundation because he knew he would not be able to make the hard decisions. that by itself is not a bad thing but where he made the mistake was letting danzo do whatever he wanted without ever taking action. he should have put a limit on danzos ability to act instead of giving him the ability to act independently. that way the foundation would have been under the hokages control and danzo would have simply run it.

well kakashi and tsunade became old too, and kakashis by far my favorite hokage and i think he's the most slept on kage but the third was too op for them to have killed early and then reanimated in his prime in the war. he would've soloed edo madara.

I blame power creep at the end. Madara throwing meteors and Hashirama summoning thousand armed wood goddesses to fight his rival, and tailed beast balls being thrown easily makes not only Hiruzen, but a lot of the other Kage look bad. War arc - you get to see the other dead kage in action - Raikage has an iron body and a unstoppable spear, needs to hit himself to lose. Mizukage has a tricky illusion and an infinite steam explosion jutsu, and needs to be beaten by 2 kage - Onoki and Gaara. You see that and go "that's the Kage level, only other Kage can face them", and Hiruzen's skill and abilities level become understandable. You then throw in DBZ styled attacks with meteors, black erasing balls, giant statues etc, and all that goes out the window. How can any of these Kage get on the Hashirama/Madara level? Even Minato needed a power up with his own 9 tail form because his tactic of "teleport throat slicing/teleport rasengan" wasn't up to the level required.

Besides killing Danzo, there doesn’t seem to be a better way to deal with him. Asking the third to kill a friend is like asking Naruto to do it, it’s out of their characters. Also, Danzo if casted away would’ve just aligned with outsiders such as Orochimaru to make a coup, possibly spreading problems. Konoha was in a bad state: a Kage died, Sand and neighbor villages could use the opportunity to attack, the next in succession (Jiraya) refused, Danzo was in line, was ready for a military coup, unrelated and at the same time clans wanted civil coup. Oh, there was an orphan jinchuuriki loose. Basically Hiruzen had, against his best will and wishes, been forced to become Hokage again and deal with all the shit until someone strong enough was ready to become one in his shitty place.

Kishimoto really messed around with powercreep at the end. Went from grounded techniques of Minato's teleport throat killing, Raikage's iron body/nukite and Mizukage's illusion and infinite explosion technique to pseudo dragon ball Z when Madara entered the scene. Meteors, owning the 5 current Kage easily, to Obito and Madara getting 10 tails with matter deletion abilities, to Kaguya and her dimension hopping/spirit bomb attacks. It went from fairly grounded of "this is the Kage level, where other Kages are required to win" to silly levels of power, where only Naruto and Sasuke can win. Hiruzen got left in the dust because of power creep and Kishimoto not really doing much with him when he got revived. Even Minato got a 9 tails powerup because the one thing he was really good at doing - teleport assassinating, wasn't good enough to be on the Madara level of power required.

Every Hokage was at fault with the Uchihas, the first failed in making Madara the second, the second only made thigs worse with the Uchiha, Sarutobi made the most solid run and passed the torch to the fourth who died. He then was called back, since Konoha lost its best ninja of the generation, was at the brink of a war and the successor, Jiraya, refused the spot. Kakashi wasn’t ready, Tsunade was out of question, Danzo wanted a coup, citizens wanted another different coup at some point soon. Out of choices and unwilling to kill Danzo he made the second best choice to keep him in check and became hokage past his desires and time until someone could be in his position.

We only know a little bit about a few members. We know about kisame and zabuza, who are marginally stronger than any of the other swordsmen. We know a little bit about mangetsu to make him interesting, but it's pretty much, he was one of the strongest, and most feared because he could wield all of the swords, and he was suigetsu's older brother.

Not sure on the exact age but it's anywhere between the ages of 19 and 25. He's 68 or 69 years old by the time he dies and at that time the sannin are all 50 and they're 6 when he starts training them and as you said, he's evidently older by that point than when he was made hokage, so when he's training them he's 25. He was probably older than 19 though and was probably made hokage around 21-23ish because Hashirama was alive until Tsunade was a toddler and at the point when Hiruzen's hokage both Senju bros are dead.

SoZexal Before the age of 24. Tsunade, Jiraiya and Orochimaru became genin at age 6. There's 18 years difference between them. Sanin 51 in part 1 and Hiruzen 68/69 during part 1. Meaning Hiruzen was 23/24 when he started teaching them. He was already the Hokage at that point.

I thought he was their best hokage he wasnt the strongest but he was definitely up there especially in his prime years when he gained the nickname "god of shinobi" just like hashirama but was even able to use every single jutsu in the ninja world and he used all of it at a very high level he usually uses fire style and hadn't used water style in a long time and was his weakness but was able to make multiple other ninjas use fire style while he used watr style to counter it and all of them were elite ninjas from the war i think so he was ready for anything and in his prime years he had only a few ninja's above him i'd say there's only a handful of people that can beat him the only humans i think that can beat him is naruto, sasuke, madara, hashirama, and maybe minato or tobirama but thats gonna be a very close battle

He was was too lenient with danzo. He was blinded by their friendship that he couldn't see what was truly going on behind the scenes. This was his biggest mistake.

im pretty sure that sarutobi was hokage longer than all the other six hokage combined, (around 50 years). even though he was too lenient on danzo and orochimaru, i think those negatives are offset by how much he inspired the next generations and future hokage. He advised Minato, taught Tsunade, got Kakashi out of Root, looked after Naruto (sort of). Then there are the countless shinobi and children who he personally inspired to keep the Will of Fire going

but there's still a lot of shinobi who's lives were ruined because of his mistakes. He basically forced an entire clan into extinction because Danzo didn't treat them with respect. This lead to one of the leaf's most powerful shinobi to become a rogue ninja who joined the akatsuki, another one of its most powerful shinobi become a rogue ninja, slaughter tons of samurai, assault all of the kage, and basically be one of the main factors as to why the 4th great shinobi war started. A lot of stuff happened even after his death because of mistakes he made as the hokage. No other hokage messed up nearly as much as he did. Madara leaving the village wasn't really Hashirama's fault, Tobirama at least gave the Uchiha some power, and gave them their own police force, nothing really happened while Minato was hokage, aside from the 9 tales attack, which wasn't his fault, tsunade didn't mess up as badly, we don't know what happened while kakashi was hokage, but we can assume nothing really happened. As for Naruto, well he's still the hokage, and he hasn't done anything to the scale of hiruzen. I liked Hiruzen, and he was a good person, but he was completely oblivious, and blinded by his friendship with Danzo.

@@chefcinnabutter first of all dont forget that it was the third who sympathized the most with itachi's pacifist attitude and that ended up being extremely useful since that is a big part of what initially kept itachi, one of the most pivotal figures in the entire plot, loyal to the leaf. Ever since the 9 tails attack, the uchiha lost trust with not just the elders, but the general public too. The uchiha's unrest was already not going to end well since the Uchiha were planning rebellion too. Remember that sparing sasuke from the massacre was only possible because of hiruzen's constant appealing to danzo and the other elders. All you are doing is looking at negatives of sarutobi and disregarding the positives or the negatives of the others. Yes tobirama did give the uchiha "some" power but making them in charge of the police force was a bad idea in the long run. Orochimaru really said it best that people who are in charge of law enforcement tend to be ostracized by the general public and that only increased the amount of distrust between the uchiha and everyone else. Tsunade was incapacitated for the most significant part of her time as hokage: the formation of the allied forces. She did protect the entire village from pain but at the cost of danzo representing the leaf at the summit and that definitely could have gone better. Not really her fault since it was a lose-lose situation but it still her decision so we have to count that against her. Like you said, we dont really know what kakashi did as hokage so theres not much to say, same with Naruto. Minato was hokage for even less time than tsunade so its hard to critique him but he made a great judgement call by making naruto the 9 tails jinchuriki. From what I can tell, aside from building and maintaining the leaf village in its early stage, hashirama focused too much in attempting to create peace in the entire shinobi world. His efforts were not received as well as he hoped and he ended up dying in the first shinobi world war without finding a way to ensure lasting peace within his own village, let alone the shinobi world. Thats what led to tobirama trying to finish what hashirama started in his own way
