How Powerful Was the Scourge? - World of Warcraft Lore 

Undead Unholy DK. So ummm... I was human, then died. Then was raised as undead. Then broke free and became forsaken. Then "died" again and became a DK. Then broke free again and became a forsaken DK. ... and now am enslaved to the new Lich King in Legion and forced to fight the Burning Legion?

I still consider to this day that the Scourge is the biggest threat we've ever faced. Sure, the Burning Legion managed to make sure that Azeroth split into all the continents, but they still didn't manage to destroy it. And they sort of tried again in the burning crusade but we quickly end up on Outland to rid of them. And now they are attacking again, giving them a chance to do even worse than before. And yes, I know if the Burning Legion had a fight against the Scourge, the undead would lose. But that being said, considering what we got to know from WotLK: The Scourge was held back. And if we didn't have a new Lich King, the undead would be a much greater threat to Azeroth. There was a part of Arthas that kept them in check, just as how Bolvar does it now. So... we've fought the Burning Legion when they try their hardest each time. Then we fought the Scourge that was being 'held back'. So because of that, to Azeroth: The Scourge has been the biggest threat so far - the Legion just never manage to get enough forces in. The rest of the unvierse though, definitely the Burning Legion (Or void Lords, maybe.)

I'm wondering if you could do the theory that Ner'zhul isn't dead and that he is attached to the Helm of Domination. He was the one that manipulate Bolvar and the ghosts of Frostmourne so that the Horde, Alliance and Argent Crusade thought that the Scourge needs a leader when in reality it doesn't. If you think it it makes sense so that he could fulfill its vengeance against the Burning Legion and he's going to use the Heroes of Azeroth (as allies I hope) to get rid of Kil'jaeden, because the one that wanted to destroy the world was Arthas. Ner'zhul only participate in the Third War so he could get more undeads to his army and betray the Legion. It's a theory I've been thinking about. A tricky one I would say. What's your opinion?

I miss the Lich King. I started in 09 just after the launch of Wrath, and damn, do I miss that crazy, twisted, broken man.

Dude, The Scourge was not one of the most bigest threats, it was ''THE'' Bigest threat, as Uther sayd in the ''Halls of Reflection'' He sayd that the lingering piece of Arthat that was still floating in The Lich King's mind was all that holded the Scourge from anihilating Azeroth. So by all threats that we have faced, The Scourge was the biggest threat, we were lucky that Arthas will was strong enough to hold the Lich King and the scourge to swallow every living thing. By the way, among everything we've ever faced, The Lich King was the only boss ''EVER'' to actually kill us, and i don't mean like a wipe, i mean in the lore, he actually killed us, so was the script, him killing us. This boss, will remain legend, to be the strongest there ever was, shure there are bosses as Ley Shen who had the essence of Ra'Den, but he was far from close to kill us. After all expansion i have gone through and all the challanges i've ever did, no enemie was as threatening as The Scourge. When i first walked on the road to Icecrown, i was felling like there was nothing good, only death awaited me, a light forsakened place, the coldness themed place felt as cold as the Icecrown's environment, it was and it still is the land of the dead. To be serious, what expansion was more viollend, horrifing, misterious, brutal, scary or crazyer than WotLK? I'm not saying this because WotLK was my favorite expansion, no, MoP was my favorite, but i'm speaking here the truth. I think the scourge could even overpower the Legion if it had enough time, think about it, a fallen knight raised as a Death Knight was 10 times more powerful as it was when it was alive, i wondered how powerfull a Doom/Fell Guard or any Demon would be if raised from the dead as The Ligh King's minions, Kill'Jaden created The Lich King, but that does not mean the creation can't surpass his creator, i think that when The Lich King was done with Azeroth it will turn his atention on the Legion. And to be serious, i think a Lich or a Necromancer is more powerfull than any of te Legion's minion. And... u know the Abominations, they are horrors created fro diffrend corpses, like an experiment, i think they would try the same experiment with demons, a demon abomination :) . Kill'Jaden trully created the ultimate weapon, and if gived enough time it could overpower everything. The world of the dead was evifient, and remember , demons are demons, but as like manny other creatures, they are also living creatures, they're not dead, and it means they can be used the same way. The Legion is endless in numbers because they are revived in the nether and come back, think about it, they can't return in the Nether if they are rised as undead demons :)) and with this they'r number will diminish, going down to nothing, and the Scourge will triumph.

I've had a hypothesis that the crown of domination, is actually in control [even now with Bolvar] due to the darkening ways of our favourite frozen highlord- his rejection of the light, his buddy-buddy-ness with raising champions to fight "for-the-azeroth!" Would anyone else say there's validity in this?

Need Warlords of Azeroth. Alternate timeline Azeroth where Medivh is corrupted by Old Gods instead of Sargeras. It also needs goodish living Nerubians and an alternate version of the Lich King (or Queen?)

I think if they found a way to raise demons or imprison demons inside their bodies, the scourge could have conquered the legion, what is dead may never die so the spirit cant leave the body

I agree with most of what you said. But I think in a very long term the scourge could be as powerful as the Legion. I mean, the Legion was pretty disorganised before Sargeras turn into demon. And in fact if you consider that the scourge was always organised (by Nerzhul), if they had like 10 000 years to prepare for example, the scourge could be so powerful! And did any one considered to steal the soul of the demon to stop their rebirth when they die? (you know, they go back to their original world) A death knight can almost control the soul of the person (human, orc...) he does raise from death. I think that many things could be done by this army if they were researching to do this (soul control).

I think undead zombies covering only one continent of one planet is nothing compared to demons from numerous planets and full of fell magic. Undead may have been a big threat to Azeroth but they were beatable. Only way of stopping legion is to cut off all portals to Azeroth. Guess we'll see though.

let me just start by admitting that i'm a huge scourge fan boy, and that i'm competent lorewise but not all knowing. But i'd like to throw in a few arguments as to why a war between the legion and the scourge would not be a predetermined legion win (i know i'm cutting the scourge alot of slack with these) The way i personally see the scourge is by comparison something along the lines of Skynet from Terminator. An initial weapon design that got completely out of hand, and continuously upgraded/empowered itself, with the purpose of eventually waging war against it's creater, the legion. First off, addressing the this "resolve" thing that the forces of azeroth seems to be commented on several times, that allows them to overcome impossible odds. As i see it, this "resolve" is simply the defenders fighting at their absolute maximum capabilities/fighting fanatically, because they're faced with a pretty grim alternative. While that's all well and good, doesn't the scourge also ALWAYS fight like this? i mean they're being mindcontrolled for goodness sake, so i imagine they'll be fighting at their maximum at all times. They don't fear, they don't surrender and they're practically immune to the legion's more subtle tactics, such as promises of power and fel corruption (as far as i know.) While the legions numbers are infineltly bigger than that of the scourge, imagine for a moment that Tirion hadn't gotten that final blessing at the end of ICC. Arthas would have killed and raised azeroths strongest fighters to be his own personal champions, and then proceeded to break the siege of ICC and turn the tides of the war, as was his master plan. eventually the entirety of the known world (the playable races and their lands including several others) would have fallen and put into the lich kings service. Now Arthas not only has the same kind of firepower that the forces of Azeroth had, but even more, since they're combined with Arthas' initial Scourge forces and the fact that he is able to raise corpses no matter how old they are, which means all who have died in the past, will eventually be raised and put into the scourge army. By in addition to this, the civilians of the fallen kingdoms would also be added to the arsenal. Now he has an army several times the size of Azeorth's combined forces doing the current expansion. Though when all is said and done, the legion would still be waaaaay beyond the scourge in terms of military strength. To this i say, that the Scourge has already shown that they have great adabtability, when faced with a challenging opponent, such as military tactics and style of warfare, which as far as i've seen, is something the legion is severely lacking. The Scourge are masters of some sort of attrition warfare, which they used against Lordaeron, but they're also quite competent in a more direct warfare style, as displayed in the War of the Spider and the invasion of Quel'Thalas. (This one is a bit of a stretch, but it works in my head). Originally, the plague of undeadth and the Scourge's necromantic powers only extended to raising humans (as far as i know) but we've seen that they've been able to upgrade this ability, by the fact that at this point, i believe they're able to raise all playable races (excluding worgen, besides the death knight reanimation), Including a few others such as the Nerubians and Vrukuls. And as far as i know, the plague of undeath has also been further upgraded to affect these races. With that in mind, i'm curious to why people see it as utterly impossible to raise demons in a similiar fashion. Besides, the Scourge has proven to be quite effective with whatever kind of soul magic it is they posses, which i assume could also be altered to enable ensnarement of demon souls, which in essence renders the Legion's immortality useless. And if this is the case, then shouldn't the plague of undeath also be able to further developed to affect demons, if it is, this thing could run rampant across several legion worlds, effectively destroying them without the Scourge ever needing to launch an invasion. Besides with the Scourge forces that would be present on Azeroth, and the Lich King as it's master mind, i believe he'd be more than able to do what the cannon defenders of azeroth are doing, putting a plug in the legion flood gate, and holding them in place. while the plague does it's work. Now poke holes 'til i cry.

I'm a firmly believer that the Scourge could have actually overtaken the Legion if Arthas succeeded at ICC. With his new 25 champions and the corrupted Tyrion Fordring, he could have conquered the rest of Azeroth with ease and with everyone under his banner, no one would have been able to stop him.

Why doesn't Bolvar fight the legion with the scourge?

I actually think that scourge is the most powerful thing to ever threaten azeroth and would be much stronger than Legion, HOWEVER... ONLY if the death knights or lich king himself could turn demons to the undead, if it would not be possible, then you would be correct in saying that Black Empire and Legion is stronger than Scourge.

Never forget that from everything that happened, war in Northrend was the bloodiest conflict in recent history (since opening of them dark portal). What show it most is event that most of people don't know about: You know the Cathedral of Light? (that giant ass building in Stormwind). After defeat of LK, ceremony was hold in memory of fallen heroes. The cathedral was full of people, standing right next to each other with more people gathering outside. Each person that was there held a candle, and Archbishop Benedictus announced that each candle doesn't burn for 1 hero, not for 10 heroes, but for 100 heroes that fell in Northrend. At this point Jaina cried taking in the fact that at least 50 000 only Alliance soldiers died there.

The Scourge could be eventually be a match to the Legion BUT it would take a very long time as Arthas says in the broken isles memory "The dead will always outnumber the living".

This has me wondering it the Legion could in some way retake control over the scourge. Or if they have been experimenting with other races and planets as well. We do know from the War of the Ancients novel that the Legion was experimenting with the fallen Night Elf defenders, turning them into un-dead creatures. Not quite what the scurge is now, but like a pre-scourge thing. Or maybe this time was their 1st experiments with it.... I don't really recall?

What would you say was the ultimate goal for Arthas in WotLK, I mean besides just dominating the world? As to Bolvar, I'm really hoping he's becoming more of an antihero that we'll need to ally with but no one will trust him much like most that ally with the Forsaken

Arthas could of raised demons as undead it seems like the Ebon blade is doing that cause you can see Amal'thazad experimenting on demons and we also used demon body parts to create rotgutt

i hope the scourge and kel'thuzad make a return as kel'thuzad's character is written as loyal to arthas. Perhaps since kel'thuzad hasn't been permanently killed pff he could be sheming in the background to take control and grow over time.

From what I gathered in my researchs in his ultimate form the Lich King was actually able to control Knights of the Ebon Blade and the Forsaken yet he didnt because of his plan to create the ultimate fighting force as he described in the last phase of the LK fight when you DIED! Ofcourse even tho he was winning he underestimated the Light and the Ashbringer.

''Scourge is a shadow of its former self''? come on now, the lore clearly states that unleashed, the Scourge would utterly annihilate Azeroth, i don't see how the ''few'' small armies we faced in Northrend means they are weak. What the heroes of Horde and Alli killed during the expansion were nothing but irrelevant fodder, easily replenishable troops. Now in legion, the Deathlord and other champions just kicked Kil'jaeden's butt, while the Lich King literally played and wiped us in a single blow, id say the Scourge is capable of facing the Legion well enough, especially since they can use demon body parts for their own creations...if nothing more, as seen in DK campaign, you don't need souls, when you can just turn their own flesh against them.
