For everyday drivers, driving in the rain raises the risk of a fatal crash by 34%. For professional race-car drivers who regularly compete in the rain, talent can only help so much when you're driving over three times the pedestrian speed limit. We spoke with IndyCar racer Colton Herta about how he and other drivers survive and even win such high-speed races during a torrential downpour.

Simple answer - downforce and special tyres! Downforce if you don't know is pushing the car into the ground/track, which is depending on how much angle there is of the wing. More downforce produces more grip but massively reduces straight line speed. The tyres used are not all around solid (aka slick tyres), they are like normal road tyres but made for racing. This allows the standing water to get caught in the cut out line part of the tyre and kick it up into the air which most likely instant evaporates due to the heat of the tyre. It also means you can keep more contact on the track, rather than slick tyres which will skim across the water known as aquaplaning. Hope this is useful 😂

Adding to previous replies to your comment, IndyCars also don't have power steering. You gotta really crank the wheel to save the car sometimes.

Something that I always asked myself, mostly with open single seaters is how the pilot can manage the impact of the rain on itself. Like. If you are doing 200kph, the droplets from the rain are hitting your body at that speed. Does the suit fully protects you from the impacts, or is it still somewhat painful?

I remember hearing that one time a while back an indycar driver fractured a finger (or something like that) after a fly struck it while travelling at 200Mph so hundreds of raindrops must have some impact
