Hey Everyone! It’s Karin here from Arden Cove.
One of our biggest goals with creating the Anti-Theft Waterproof Crossbody was to help women travel with the peace of mind that their belongings are kept safe, whether that's halfway across the world, or just riding the subway in your city.
Unfortunately, there are people out there who will target purses, steal belongings and information.
We believe that a huge part of staying safe is being a smart, well-informed traveler, and taking the steps to ensure that you aren't an easy target. Here are some common ways that purse thieves work, and how to protect your belongings.
Do you have any more tips on how to stay safe and protect your belongings? I would love to hear from you, let us know in the comments below.

I do not remove my cross body bag even when eating, it stays on my lap. My lock is a pair of medium size safety pins over the closed zipper. When walking, my bag is always in front of my chest. My small wallet is attached to the inside of my bag by a 12 inch cord. Been traveling for 30 years and so far so good.

I've been purchasing purses that have a built in wallet. My last two purses have been Travelon anti-theft cross body bags. I too just keep my bag on me when eating (keeps me from forgetting it!) I also keep my bag on me when grocery shopping. I don't actually travel a lot, but I did notice when I was in Europe that there was someone who was "checking us out" so I mentioned to our group (we were waiting for the rest of us to show up) that we should move out from the alley we were in to a more open area. I also mentioned that we needed to be more aware. The guy who was "checking us out" moved on.

I travelled throughout Europe with a soft leather backpack type handbag. Lots of compartments. I invariably wore it to the front. My arms were free, if I was in a crowded space I walked hugging it. Essentially I was saying pickpocket someone else. I didn’t care how I looked. May I just say, beware of children playing and running around you. Also many pickpockets are debonair well dressed gents, not whom you would expect to be ready to fleece you. Be very aware of everyone…….

I live in Greece and there are groups of young, well dressed, attractive Bulgarian women who work in threes to distract men with their flirting while the other one pickpockets the target.

In my early 20s a long time ago, I had a middle-aged woman walking a small dog, whom I'd stopped my car to ask for directions from in the middle of nowhere in Scotland distract me by pointing ahead (to the middle of nowhere) in order to swipe my cute little green leather purse with my week's pay in cash inside. I only noticed when I'd stopped at a petrol station with an actual attendant and went to pay. They were lovely and let me forward the money afterwards, but there's a place in H.ll for her and she's likely already there. Decades later, I was in M&S in a shopping mall in Greenock and was distracted by a tall, dark, good looking, very well dressed, polite man who asked my opinion on flowers (Mother's Day that weekend). Fortunately, thanks to my previous experience, I immediately turned back to see a similar man heading directly for my trolley and my bag. The look of shock on his face was a picture and he veered off sharply. I reported it to security. Some time later in an M&S in Glasgow I saw an elderly lady put her open handbag down on the floor and turn away to look at something. I just had to go straight up and warn her what had happened to me. I hope it meant she was careful in future. I now use a small, leather backpack carried on my front in many places and I will hook the handles of handbags around my ankles if I have to put them on the floor, keeping them to the front, under the table. I also split cards and cash and keep some hidden. My purse is on a chain, etc, etc. As things get tougher out there, there will be more and more desperate people willing to take risks. Be careful out there and not just the women. Men are pick-pocketed too. I also just remembered sitting in the passenger seat of my (then) boyfriend's car, waiting for him to come out of a shop, when another guy opened my door and reached towards my bag on the floor at my feet. Just at that point my boyfriend opened the driver's door and got in as the other guy closed the door and walked off. Little did he know that my boyfriend was a multiple Dan black belt in a martial art, was super fit and could move like the wind. If the thief had stolen my bag, he wouldn't have gotten far. I always keep my car doors locked, my bag to my left (driving), over my arm and wedged between me and the locked door or looped around my legs (passenger). Even if the windows are open, they're only open a tiny bit. That incident was on the South Side of Glasgow. These opportunists are everywhere.

@@ameliagfawkes512 hello Amelia, you talk from experience and use the same tactics I do, if my bag has to go on the floor it is most definitely looped around my feet or the chair leg. Distraction is their modus operandi. Like you I am covering my bases, in effect saying pick someone else. It is sad that we have to do this, but to them it’s just a job.

I have been using anti theft bags since 2015 and as I have gotten older. Always split your money up and carry some close to your body, under your clothing. Leave your passport in your room fe or hotel safe. Carry a photocopy with you or photograph copy on your phone. Also invest in an RFID Purse or Wallet to ensure your credit cards can't be read by a skimmer close by. Duplicating your cards information.
@ameliagfawkes512
@ameliagfawkes512 Год назад
I use an RFID purse, but you can also have the contactless facility deactivated just by going into your branch. They can do it immediately for debit cards and they'll send you a new one with the symbol removed. I haven't been able to get them to do it for credit cards, which I cannot comprehend. Use cash, but if you do use a card, cover the touch pad just in case someone targets you later for your card when they already have your PIN. I think contactless is an appalling development in banking and doing online banking with a mobile is just asking for trouble.

I was pushed off balance by a couple of youths when getting on the Tube and one slid his hand into the magnetic closure of my bag and got my wallet. The police eventually returned the empty wallet to me which was found discarded. Luckily, I had very little money and no cards in it. I was eight months pregnant at the time. They look for vulnerable people. Never had a bag with a magnetic closure since!

One more method the pickpocketers apply is when you relax while getting down from a bus or train. Because we are cautious and careful while we are in the vehicles. While getting down we are relaxed and our mind is on our next task or destination. This is how I lost my wallet once.

This is great advice, I keep a handfull of small bills handy for tipping, in the event it gets stolen it hasn't ruined my entire trip. I never carry a purse. KEEP ANYTHING IN BAGS THAT CAN BE REPLACED. NO VALUABLES. CARRY A SMALL CARRY ON WITH UNDERWEAR, TOOTHBRUSH, CHANGE OF CLOTHES. The best trip I ever took was one where I had only minimal possessions and bought what I needed when I got there, when I was done I packed everything into a box and shipped it home via USPS. I.E. dirty laundry. Travel light whenever possible.

I've traveled a lot. My best ever travel investment is a sleeveless travel vest. Lightweight, with multiple zipped/firm press stud closed pockets- some outside for easy access to tickets, pen, a small bit of cash or one card- with more inside for keeping valuables 'Ill need during the day- spare cash for the day, phone etc. Serious valuables such as passports and most money/cards I wear inside my underwear in a 'passport belt' of course. Cross front bag is just for 'lose-able items such as water bottle, tissues or similar. So someone has to undress me to get at the 'real stuff'.

I have a couple more! Consider reinforcing clasp-style connections with cable ties, if you’re not planning on detaching them. The ties come in common colors, so needn’t be too conspicuous. Too, carry a few extra ties, just as spares. As to carrying cash or cards, nothing beats a well-foundationed bosom!

Dip and lift failure! I was wearing a mini backpack as a purse. I went inside a very tiny, packed 99c store in NYC. The main part of the bag was secure with a zipper, drawstring, and a slide latch. I had it slung over one shoulder with the straps across my upper body. On the outside of the bag were two compartments, one meant for an old style flip phone and the other, I guess, for possibly a snack or juice box, or wallet. Both closed with a magnetic flap under a fake snap. I didn’t use them except for maybe pens and a small writing pad, which is what I had in them that day. As I stepped sideways to round a tight corner, I felt my bag pulling, and looked back to see a petite woman with her hand inside the notebook sized section. Before I could say or do anything, the two of us were pushed from behind by a rude shopper trying to force her way out of the aisle. The result was the two of us getting shoved forward into a display rack of sunglasses. I lunged forward to attempt to catch the rack with the effect that the woman, still trying to get away, swung sideways past me and fell, her hand still stuck in my bag, onto the rack, toppling it, myself, and yet another woman onto the rack on the floor. The manager, a man of maybe 50, pushed his way over and in broken English and Mandarin, cleared an area. Upon righting ourselves, I managed to untie the straps of my backpack in which the woman’s hand was still inserted. The inside of the compartment was poorly finished and had all sorts of nylon threads in a loop along the bottom inside. She’d gotten her fingers tangled in them and when I first attempted to move out of the aisle, had pulled her with me! The manager was no fool and it seemed he figured out immediately how he happened to have three women on top of a downed display rack in his store. The last woman to fall, wrong place at wrong time, looked at us in disgust, yelled some choice words in Chinese at the manager and hastily departed. The would-be pick-pocket lady was last to stand up, her hand still in the compartment. I accused her of trying to steal from me, to which she responded by by fake crying that her shoulder was injured, and she was trying to save me from falling! She demanded I let go of my bag, something I refused to do. She had inserted her hand while the bag was attached to my person; she could extract it in the same manner. She upper the hysterics and screamed as if I was murdering her, that I pulling her arm out of its socket. By this time, another worker had called 911. I told her to stop the shenanigans and hold still. I’d get her hand out. She was obviously holding on to the nylon threads so it looked like her hand was truly stuck. When the NYPD officers came in, they threw everyone not involved out of the store and the woman began screaming about her dislocated shoulder and she wants an ambulance, me arrested for assault, for false accusation, the manager for being in cahoots with me, of setting her up for vandalism and destruction of merchandise….It was so ridiculous, I felt like laughing in her face, removing my valuables and just giving her the bag since she insisted upon not letting go of it. Apparently, the pick-pocket was well-known to both police and area store workers. When a cop ordered her to let go of the bag, her hand came right out and they put her in cuffs and took her out. I had to give a report as did the manager. No, I was not injured and did not want medical assistance, the manager, nether, or the woman who fell onto the sunglass display. Did I wish to press charges? For what? The fall was not assault and battery. Attempted one-handed robbery and trespassing? I told the manager I’d press charges if he’d like me to, but all I really wanted was to get the subway and go home! I was sorry about the sunglasses and did try to avoid toppling the rack! I gave the cops my info and I departed, this time with my bag beneath my coat. It’s too bad you can’t charge a person with multiple counts of stupidity!

It was, at the very least, attempted theft and, by touching you and/or your property, a variation of assault. Causing you to fall would also have been a charge of battery or similar. I would have pressed charges. Since she's likely not been punished for her regular crimes as much as she should have been, she's likely out there cause merry mayhem to other folks' lives. I have to say that the third lady who pushed both of you was also guilty of assault, but at least her actions ultimately alerted you to the robbery in progress.

I think this is a massive problem we have in the UK - that the Government virtually criminalises self-defence, especially with weapons. The Police are too busy searching for word crimes and promoting woke agendas than in actually detecting real crimes. I would love to see a reversal of some of our laws, particularly with the deliberate influx of illegal immigrants, many of whom are attacking the Brits even though they've been given more benefits and rights than those Brits. It's appalling.

My elderly aunt went to a bank and cashed her social security check. She was in her 60's. She had a simple purse with a strap she put over her shoulder. She put the cash from her social security check in her purse. And left the bank. She wasn't looking behind her as she exited the bank when a young man came up behind her and shoved her hard, knocking her down to the sidewalk, and running off with her purse. She told me that if she had a cross body bag she would have been hurt a lot worse because he was young and strong and would have dragged her on the ground to get that purse. He was probably a drug addict wanting enough cash to get his "fix". So knowing that, I don't carry large amounts of cash in my purse. EVER. I keep my keys in my pocket, not my purse. I keep my cell phone in my pocket too. You can buy a belt with a slit in it to keep your cash in. I figure if someone gets my credit card I have a photo copy of it at home in a file, so I can call my credit card company ASAP and cancel the card and have the bank card company issue me a new number the crook can't use. I do not....I DO NOT USE A CROSS OVER PURSE. If someone wants my purse that bad they will hurt me or even kill me to get it. If you're a small person, or elderly, and a thief wants your purse, best to just give it to the jerk. If they have a razor blade to slash your purse, they will use on you too. My advice....don't carry lots of cash in a purse. Be smart....let the thief have your purse in a confrontation. Don't fight him for it. He might have a knife. He might have a gun. He might hurt you or kill you. Your life is worth more than what ever you carry in your purse. Cross over bags only work with good thieves who don't want to hurt you to get your money. Most people stealing other people's purses are desperate. And they will do anything to get the money they are after.

@@carollewis3912 We were in Rome quite a few years ago and my daughter's silver necklace she'd received as a gift and hadn't yet worn was stolen from it's box and replaced with a tiny hand-wash bottle - half-full. It was the only piece of jewellery we didn't put in the safe and left in her suitcase (if only I'd known!). We didn't notice until we got home. The hotel was one of those quaint city hotels right in the centre and I'd previously been commiserating with one of the male members of staff who'd "confided" in me that workers in Rome could not afford to buy property or even rent a place by themselves. I was less sympathetic when I realised they'd stolen from us, even though it wasn't a massively expensive item, because my (then) young daughter was very upset. It's the only time we've ever had our stuff pilfered on holiday. To counter that, we had a lovely meal in Barcelona about 10 years ago and accidentally left my daughter's bag behind (with a fair bit of money, etc) when she'd gone to the loo. We raced back and they'd kept it for us, knowing we'd come back for it. Everything was there. Large cities are terrible for theft, but it's the sneaky stuff that hurts more (we'd left them large tips in the hotel room, which was barely big enough to swing a cat, in Rome!!!)

@@ameliagfawkes512 My uncle (he passed away in 2021) got pickpocketed in Rome. He had to wait for Monday to apply for a passport as the theft happened on a weekend. He was en route to a Holy Land tour so, he missed his flight. He had US $1000 cash in his wallet that was stolen. In general, it's always advised to leave your precious jewelry behind at home. A pilot commented in another RU-vid channel that his crew members were shot in the South American country that they were in before their next flight. I don't know which country it was. Maybe Argentina or Venezuela. He said better get robbed than get shot there because they will shoot to steal from you. After the pandemic, people are desperate so, the stealing will only increase everywhere. Tourists are not as plentiful as before so, they are seen as having the means to travel and have the money to spend. I made sure I was wearing pants and blazer when I was traveling around Italy. The other tourists in my group going to the Vatican were in shorts and sandal-slippers. Even when I go to the grocery here in Toronto, Ontario, I always wear a long sleeve blouse with a collar or anything long sleeve. I don't like being disrespected or considered easy target with all the stabbing and shooting going on around the city. So many young girls are exposing their skin unnecessarily and just giving off the impression of being naive. It's okay to be that way in a neighborhood that has trustworthy people who know you but, never in any society that's gone crazy or in a foreign country. Better be safe than be sorry. Nowadays, even airlines don't want to pay for lost, delayed or damaged baggage without proof of contents receipts/value. The risk will always be on the travellers so, taking all precautions is in our best interest. Japan, Korea and the Philippines were my last visits. The first two were fine. I already knew how things worked in the Philippines Just the same, I still wore long sleeve blouses with collars because again, I want to be respected when I want service. In general, Asians do mind personal appearance so, I was mindful of being dressed modestly without broadcasting I'm a tourist. Otherwise, I could have been followed and robbed after changing currency locally. Goodluck in your next travels!

I, personally, would not do that. There are motorcycle thieves out there. They'll snatch your clutch and not care if they take you with it. The chances it happening are slim, but, if it does, the chances of you getting very badly hurt are high. At the very least don't walk at the edge of the pavement with your clutch on the road side. Be careful. xx

If I'm commuting or in a crowd I carry ID, money, credit cards and passport/docs in a zippered body pouch under my clothes between a undershirt and top. If I have to carry a purse I have a leather travel purse that has a wider strap that goes across body hanging elbow length so its more in front/under my arm and has an inner zippered pocket as well as a zippered top. The ID, money and cards go in the inner zipper pocket. (More layers to have to go through) In restaurants and cafes I drop the strap behind my back to my waist and the purse sits across my lap under my napkin.

Being targeted starts long before the purse. There are some destination spots that will tell travelers, carry fake purses and wallets for WHEN ( not if) you get robbed. If you are dressed as if you are carrying a lot of cash, you are on their radar. Do your homework of what to expect or environment to plan for. Never wear jewelry while traveling. In some travel destinations, travelers will stick out like a sore thumb. Americans are higher risk than others for issues not just theft. Avoid extra, extra attention. Don't stand out by dressing expensive or flashy. Leave the jewelry at home. If wedding rings are attention seeking, swap it out for a simple band. Use care with electronics, not only are they attention seekers....they are attention stealers. While your attention is on the device, the criminal is eyeing you.

I wore old pants, a long shirt, hiking boots and a back pack. I was targeted. This was in Italy in their metro. I felt a hand go deep into my pocket. They got nothing. Then the teenager ran into me. Still got nothing. Then she started yelling at me. I yelled back. Still got nothing. And I saw an old woman slightly shaking her head no at the girl. And it still wasn't over. The old woman said, I should go to the ticket counter and check my ticket for whatever reason she gave. I walked with her to the ticket counter, and she expected me to get out my wallet. I was probably surrounded by the entire ring of them, but I didn't take out my wallet. Then she told me, "be careful, their are a lot of pick-pockets here." My reply, "are you one?" She looked surprised, smiled and said, no. Then walked on. God was with me. Jesus was looking after me.

It is possible, but it is a bit tricky so m compared to strap cutting or a shoulder pull.
