There is a wonderful book about the effects of quantum mechanics in biology - Life on the Edge, The coming of age of Quantum Biology, written by the theoretical physicist Jim Al Khalil and research biologist Johnjoe Macfadden. It is an extremely well written book with simplified (as it can get) explanations about different findings and concepts of this complex field. And an entire chapter is dedicated about the magnetic sensitivity of Robins using quantum mechanics.

When I was a child until about 15 years of age, I would feel a slight tugging sensation in the middle of my forehead down to the bridge of my nose whenever my face was oriented in a northerly direction including northeast/northwest. If I turned to face south, the feeling dissipated. Whenever our family traveled by car long distance, I would lie down in the rear seat with my jacket over me and could "sense" which direction the car was heading even though I was unable to see out the window to my parents' amazement. I still feel the sensation in the same area but it's not as strong as it was back then. I have met countless others who have or have had the same ability. @@mojeimja If the study could be done here in the States, I'd volunteer for sure! I think a large majority of the human population (if not all) has this sense, but many shrug it off as a physiological annoyance or it's so subtle that it's nothing to make note of. For me during my youth, it was like the sensation of wearing glasses for the first time feeling that wave of discomfort on the bridge of the nose but it has dissipated over time. It's not that in-your-face or throbbing, but it's there.

I've always wondered how Monarch butterflies do this as well, they travel roughly 3,000 miles during thier migration from as far as Canada down to southern Mexico. And they believe Arctic Terns rack up close to 50,000 miles annually which is staggering.

Nice idea but it's not that simple. There's a reason CRISPR is not yet used as a cure all for any and all genetic conditions. For example, a single gene typically codes for many proteins so whose to say which protein loss is responsible the loss of magnetic sense. Additionally the gene could be pleiotropic (effect many phenotypic traits) and thus alter the bird in unexpected ways (it could even kill the bird). Thankfully, there are other ways to knock out or modify the magnetic sense

Has there been research to find out the genetic basis of cytochrome 4? Like there could be a prospect of figuring out what gene/s codes this protein and then we can genetically engineer it in a model species to understand it more. That would be cool! Powerful. What if we could ask the bird by designing an experiment where the control to see if the bird can visually perceive magneto-reception is an insect thats flying in a magnetic field thats alternating its magneto pattern? Perhaps it would be difficult to condition the birds to predate on such insects in a controlled environment given its mostly migratory birds, but I can imagine if it were hungry enough and we saw the results of how it reacts to the room's magneto pattern it wouldn't be long before we could form a map of its magneto receptors visual field.
Humans actually have this ability also. I forgot where the study was done but I know for a fact that it was tested and with humans blindfolded they could be asked to face home and they would be able to do it. The scientists also Place magnets inside some of the blindfolds and the people with the magnets could not accomplish the task.

@@toren9120 First, we breed literally millions of genetically engineered rats and mice constantly for laboratory use, many specifically designed to develop cancer so they can be used in research for anti-cancer treatments. There is no serious ethical argument against the hypothetical experiment I propose. Second, cryptochromes are proteins, proteins are coded for by genes. One gene codes for the production of one protein. There are a limited number of total cryptochrome genes in the genome of birds, all of which are likely known by now. Editing them sequentially to test their properties should be almost trivial. I don't think _you_ get it.

Similar experiments have been done in Drosophila. Gegear et al. (2010) 'Animal cryptochromes mediate magnetoreception ...' (sorry, YT does not allow me to post links much of the time so I have given up doing so)
My first idea would be to replace the cryptochrome gene from a migrating birds with the gene from a non-migrating birds. Then test if they can still sense the magnetic field. If they can't sense the magnetic field then you should replace the crytochrome gene with the original again and see if the resulting birds can sense the magnetic field again. That way you can exclude the possibility that some other (of target) mutation you introduced caused the birds to lose their magnetoception. My first thought was to just delete the cryptochrome but that might also cause the birds to be blind or have limited vision in general. None of this is trivial though. I'm not sure the birdspecies they work with has ever been genetically modified, so there are no established protocols to use. Our biological toolkit has progressed to a point where this should be possible, but just a few decades ago these experiments would have been near impossible to do. Today I would expect them to still be very expensive and laborious. Ethical concerns are also something that needs to be considered in animal experiments (at least when using vertebrates). I don't know the regulations, but you would probably need to get permission from some government body.

Could you use CRISPR to deactivate the gene that codes for cryptochrome and then see if the birds still migrate correctly? I think that would be pretty interesting to see!

“Fascinating.” We are still learning plenty from animals. Like echolocation from cetaceans led almost directly to the development of sonar, and that used by bats led to radar, the eyes of migratory birds can “teach” us how to build a better magnetometer.
A vast plethora of interesting things are now supposed to be open to discussion. First of all, cryptochromes were long known to be related to circadian rhythms in humans. But this is not the point. Researches in cognitive science, the organization and consolidation of memories, consciousness and a variety of other phenomena need to be approached AFRESH. When Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose proposed their ORCH OR model for consciousness, they were questioned that such in bodily environments there would be quantum decoherence. But that shadow of doubt is slowly beginning to cast its veil. A very broad vista is open right in front of us. A brave new world!
Sensing just the presence of a magnetic field wouldn't give the birds any directional information. They would need some structure(s) to orient these magnetically sensitive proteins.
The creators depth of the knowledge should be adored who enabled that mechanism in a practical use through the birds and may be also with other living beings 😊🤞

It always baffled me why I couldn't find any valuble information about magnetoreceptors. They should definitely make a gene knock-out migratory birds with no functional cryptochromes genes and see what will happen. What a such informative video, thank you Nature!
"How quantum mechanics help birds find their way" the title could be tweaked a bit... quantum mechanics is a human representation of the nature of things... it is a description of nature at the atomic scale... birds found their way well before humans developed quantum mechanics, and they'll find their way well after humans have moved on to other concerns... birds don't need the help of quantum mechanics to find their way... they just need to heed their natural inner promptings... and the same thing can be said of humans...
That is very exciting research! However I am curious how to proceed from here, to find out whether cryptochromes really are the fundament of magnetosensoric senses. I am a chemist, so maybe a biologist can help me out with this: Can birds be genetically modified to lack the cryptochrome, so that their behaviour regarding migration can be studied? (Of course such animals should be sterile, so their genes are not spread in nature)

Aren't researchers presuming that the answers are found with Light, which is visible energy- and visible because the human eyes contain both rod shaped optical nerve cells and cone shaped optical nerve cells. What if the magnetic field variations are produced by the uplifting and exposure of geological layers that have previously been hidden beneath layers that sustain the current biomass systems? Perhaps the neural cells that are receptive to variations in magnetic fields are in the bone cells. If this is the case, then it explain how aquatic life forms also exhibit behaviors that appear to be linked to barometric changes as well ( so perhaps avian navigation might be linked to bone structure and the blood circulation within bone tissue, and not optical nerves.

Shadows in form of dot or string, in fact. Yes based on vision and perception the shadow moves often and is often filled in by insects of sorts. I'm certain.
Perhaps to test how they perceive it they can put a shadow in a magnetically neutral testing environment to simulate the effect of the magnetic perception and then magnetize the testing environment again and see how the behavior of the bird changes. 1st trial them with the shadow to get a reward then 2nd introduce the magnetic field and see if ti changes thier conditioned behavior
