Gotta love how RE 4 on paper sounded like it would be the worst thing ever, being a game that would completely upend the formula of the RE series by not featuring zombies, changing up the core gameplay, having a bunch of cheesy dialogue, a nonsensical plot, while also dialling down the horror, yet it ended up being one of the greatest games of all time.
I remember when it was announced… It was like a 50/50 split on who was excited for it and those who felt like it was a betrayal from what RE was “supposed to be” as a survival horror experience. Then it launched, and everyone couldn’t get enough of this game, and here we are nearly 20 years later and people are still gushing about it. I think it’s a cult classic at this point. Cannot wait until the remake comes out.
Dialing down the horror? No, I don't think so. More like homages of the best horrors. From John Carpenter's The Thing to other legends like: Jaws, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead 2, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Dracula, hell even The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. There's a bit of Lovecraftian horror too. RE4 is horror to the very last bit, it might not be too much on the surviving part, but horror? Yes, definitely.
With horror gaming franchises like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame being left in the dark for some time, it’s surprising how the Resident Evil franchise still lives up, especially with RE4, despite its many ups and downs. And with RE4 remake coming out in a few months, let’s hope it continues on living.
I’ll find myself randomly getting that “itch” and i load up a new game looking to play for a little bit, then 8 hours go by and i’ve beat it again. Just too good
It's not survival horror tho. Mikami said it was designed to be an action game. RE 4, 5 and 6 are all action games. Silent hill 2 and RE1 remake are what survival horror mean.
Not really the getaway and the getaway black Monday where the best 3rd person shooters in the error of 2002 and 2004 then 2005 re4 came but it was more main stream
Name one game that has been ported onto different generations of consoles, not only was it critical success but a true masterpiece. I'd still play it as it never gets boring
RE 4 reminds me alot of Blood which came out in 1997 as in that game you also take on a cult as a badass with one liners and one of the main line enemies are hooded cultists with firearms that throw dynamite at you. There's also zombies with axes and your melee weapon is a pitchfork. More recently in Cultic, the spiritual successor to Blood you fight hooded cultists with both firearms and axes, plus the pistol you get is a c96 mauser.
Resident Evil 4 holds a special place in my heart, I got it for my 15th birthday and it was my first rated M game I have ever played and beaten all the way through. I still have my PS2 copy of the game to this day.
Didn't expect that you dived this much into the development of this single game, this is another proof that if there was a master's degree in the RE franchise, you would be a straight-A graduate student. But seriously, there is always a tough road for the developers who want their franchise to become the childhood memory of several generations of players. So I wish the development group of the RE4R the best of luck and I look forward to your stream after the remake's release.
There are 3 types of games that I play. I call it the Bethesda Effect and I'll give examples thusly. 1: Games that I want to play and will enjoy playing for a few hours - Oblivion. 2: Games that I want to play, but find myself getting bored quickly - Skyrim. 3: Games that I don't feel like playing, but find myself enjoying it once I start - Morrowind. RE4 is square in that 3rd category. Mercenaries is still killer and the double chainsaw man still haunts my soul.
Only game i no lifed as a kid. I remember running around with leon lookin like a pimp and sprayin zombies down with the tommy gun. Good times, amazing game!
RE4 didn't invent the 3rd-Person shooter, as there were other games that did that, but what RE4 did accomplish was make the over the shoulder camera angle mainstream, which is itself a major feat. Also, its mind-blowing to me how Mikami was able to build & finish RE4 within 2-years. That is astounding considering how polished the game is. Also, RE4 almost didn't become the powerhouse that it did on the gamecube, as its sales were disappointing to Capcom. RE4 was supposed to be a gamecube exclusive but Capcom ported it over to the PS2 to increase its sales. The gamecube at the time just didn't have a large installed base. Had Capcom not ported the game over to PS2, the series might have ended with 4. BTW, I still have my gamecube & copy of RE4. The game was way ahead of its time. Also, if you haven't played it, then I would recommend the game, "The Evil Within." Its not as good as RE4, but it is also a creation of Mikami. Its essentially very similar, but with a more whacky plot but overall has the same mechanics.
Wrong, name a other game that has the over the shoulder shooting mechanics before resident evil 4. Go ahead name one. Plus it was game of the year before it even got ported to xbox or ps2 the ge was getting lots of attention before ps2 releases.
@@xavierd3298 RE4 was released for the gamevube in 2005. It was later ported to PS2 in 2006. The game "Kill-Switch" was released in 2003. A good 2-years before RE4. RE4 DIDN'T create the over the shoulder camera, it just made it popular. FACT.
Yup re4 for me is dmc resident evil . Not that it's a bad thing but I have my reservations about four personally. Definitely the father of action horror tho . I'm curious if this new remake would lean more to survival horror or stay action horror again . Or have more survival horror elements in the action horror game .
Man to think i was a kid when my sisters dad let me play this fkr the first time, he even had the chainsaw remote!! It was the coolest thing ive played at that time and sparked my interest in (what i considered as a kid) horror games im so grateful i got to play this gem
I've played all the classic RE games, ever since I was just a youngin' (kids, amirite?), and I can tell you this much; The issues with people not liking RE4 due to it "ditching the original formula" is that it's assuming that original formula was ever as good as the one introduced in RE4. I hate to say this, but RE1-3 will never be as iconic as RE4 is, simply due to the fact that RE4's design is timeless in itself... The gameplay, the level design, the control, the dialogue, the setting, the music, etc. It's the definitive Resident Evil experience because it's not strictly horror-based, but horror action. The original games had been trying to do that for years prior to RE4's release; They attempted to make a game about horror that also happened to have heart-pounding action sequences, forcing you to not only think about resource management, but also strategizing location. The fixed camera angles definitely hampered this, yes, but wasn't the ONLY issue those games had impeding on their progress to success... It was also the strict ammunition management, existing solely to make it seem as if the games were more in tune to horror than action... But, really, they weren't. The games were holding you back to give the illusion of it being a horror game, without ever actually going all-in on a proper horror approach. One of horror's most iconic traits is how helpless you feel in a terrifying situation. That's a building block of a horror game. RE1-3 didn't have any of this, opting to give you plenty of options to deal with any and all problems that came your way, whilst simultaneously not putting nearly enough of it around to still make it seem like it was somehow "scary". RE1-3 had a serious identity crisis... RE4 did not. It embraced its action horror to the fullest. Dino Crisis was sort of the beginning of this downward slope for the Survival Horror genre; The game had all these extremely powerful enemies to deal with, and almost never enough ammunition to deal with them, forcing you to mix chemicals to create the absolutely OP Poison Darts, that simply auto-kill anything it hits that isn't a boss, breaking the flow of gameplay, as well as the game's internal balance. Dino Crisis 2 would deal away with all of this, still keeping its fixed camera angles, and was a huge success when it came out because it, too, embraced action horror. TL;DR - RE4's an iconic game because it's not afraid to be what it was meant to be... An action horror video game about absolutely destroying entire hordes of horrifying enemies that still give you chills, whilst also allowing you thrills. It's more akin to Michael Jackson's Thriller than it is Night of the Living Dead; It's meant to be fun, not overly dire and serious. P.S.: Shoutouts to Parasite Eve 2 for starting the action horror trend alongside Dino Crisis 2. Seriously, if you're into games like that, give that game a shot. It's absolutely nothing like the first game. Edit: Feel like I need to also mention how Resident Evil Zero effectively murdered the original RE style with a giant axe. Seriously... Wtf were they thinking with that game? "Let's bring back a dated, clearly unconventional inventory method that got scrapped for valid reasons for RE1... For REZero... Get it...? Because it comes before RE1? Aren't we hilarious?!"
The third build feels like it could've been what we got with the Evil Within series, taking a psychological approach instead. Would've been interesting but at the same time, it would've been too "other worldly," for my taste back then. I'm glad we got the build that we did.
I liked resident evil 4 but I'd have to say resident evil 5 was my favorite out of them all. The amount of hours and fun I put in just mercenaries alone
RE4 Development in a Nutshell Capcom: Welcome to Identity Crisis the game. Resident Evil Fans: Even we don't know hat we want it to be... Average Consumer: Just make up your fucken minds already!
re 4 and 5 where both masterpieces i mean every thing action wise from 5 was taken from 4 and i loved the co op But for kinda wen away from the BOWs and zombies RE 5 brought that back and even had lickers and was suppose to have a tyrant id have to say i like em both the same . wish They remake REzero with co op with New Engine and the Out breaks :
I love old RE4 RE4Remake I think it will never be same voice actor leon but i'm ok with that they make so hard.. it will be good if they put original voice actor RE4 on gallery for RE4REMAKE just like DMC5 any song battle we can use for character 😂
Good video but some minor mistakes. RE4 never been a success in Gamecube because of cost it was bigger failure, that's why Capcom completely scrapped Nintendo exclutivity and ported the game to other consols and Pc. That soured Mikami and Capcom's relation. Mikami said some bold claims and said its not gonna ported other platforms but Capcom's backstab simply ruined his image.
It's one if those games that has a huge replay value, that's why games like Dark Souls got so popular. No matter how many times you played it. It never gets boring. And if you do, you can do a challenge run.
A bit off topic but, for a while, I've been using RE4 as an example of how this game saved its franchise b/c I'm hoping the creators of Star Fox will take this as a means to try to do better with the franchise to save it by adding some other things that will complement the game while keeping other stuff that the fans love as long as they don conflict w/ the other. Assault attempted this, but I can agree with a couple of the criticisms about the game. And as much as I hate the main story itself in Command, being able to play other characters is what I think can really evolve the game. I love Fox McCloud, but I wanna play as different ppl from the team, as well as other major characters. I'm not saying it has to be over the top and not take itself seriously to be a better game; in fact, I think Star Fox could go for a darker take b/c, like it gets brought up, they're mercenaries. Not everyone likes them. It could also explore Fox's father's death and whether or not the original Star Fox was really sent to investigate Venom to find out what was going on there or were they set up buy corrupt ppl from the Cornerian Army, minus General Pepper, to be damage control b/c James was getting suspicious of Andross's banishment.
@@M.sami12 but what about RE6? From what I know, it sold well but some of the fans were not happy about it b/c, for many reasons, it strayed too far from what made RE great, and I can understand that.
I'm tired of RE4 fans trying to rewrite history. RE4 was a huge flop sales wise and only got anywhere once it was ported to everything. Meanwhile, RE5 was a HUGE hit right out of the gate on the 360 and PS3 (and still is with every rerelease it gets) But RE4 fans will still continue to cope.
RE4 on GameCube sold over 1M copies once it was ported to the PS2 sold over 2M, by 2014 Capcom registered 11M of copies, where's the flop? RE5 sold better but everybody hated that game.
@@misterhimura036 Compare that to something like God of War 1 on PS2 which sold 4 million copies -- 1 million is absolutely nothing in gaming unless you're an indie or have a really small budget. RE4 fans also pretend the PS2 version isn't relevant when it was the first and only time a lot of people played that hot garbage. RE4 fans like to do a lot of history rewriting and they honestly don't like facts.
Not that it's a bad game, but RE4 is probably the most overrated game ever made and not even close to a masterpiece and not even close to the best RE game.
@@parrenokylejosellec.8639 A remake of Code Veronica would make alot of money, it might not have sold as much as 4 but it sold pretty well in its own right.
It's not even close to being a masterpiece. The QTEs alone can ruin the whole experience. Yes it's fun, and yes it was revolutionary but not perfect. And it fails in the most important category for a resident evil, survival horror.
You are really not ashamed to say that RE4 is a masterpiece. Compared to RE1, RE2, RE3, RE0 and RE1R Resident Evil 4 is truly the worst and laid the groundwork for even worse RE sequels like RE5 and RE6, and you want to use this video to say that RE4 is better than the previous sequels. This video is pure propaganda from the worst part of the RE community.
@@MR.__G Well, the storyline is jarring from the start removing any investment from the first three games, the characters are silly and cartoonish, it's not at all scary or tense, QTEs, crows dropping money is stupid, too much kicking, brown upon brown, barely any soundtrack to speak of... Mechanically it's solid, can't argue there. I think a lot of people praise it so much because it was the first RE they played... For which I feel sympathy
@@MorgueOfficialMusic you’re also playing with a super agent who doesn’t take a single enemy serious. No item box, no back tracking, no resource management, item drops encourage you to kill every enemy instead of saving ammo like before, the island chapter feels like cod… This was my first RE but I don’t feel the same magic for it that I once had. It’s still tons of fun & holds up well, I just don’t feel the same. That’s why I’m excited for the changes in this reimagining. I want a new experience.
@@MorgueOfficialMusic yeah I would love to play a modernized code Veronica. Even 0 can use a remake. Idk if I’m the only one but I would like to see an over the shoulder version of the original RE.
I first played this when it released in 2005 and just finished it again recently and I'm astounded at how well it held up even 17 years later. Awesome deep dive into one of the most influential games of all time!
Brooo, crazy how much time and effort went into the development of this game. Seriously Blitz, this is one of the best RE4 retrospectives into the game's creative process that I've ever seen. Great work man, thanks for putting this out! 😁👍
@Kract @ Evil Blitz I subbed to your channels for similar reasons. You both surprise me with your in-depth analyses and enough research into those behind-the-scene details. Hearing you two telling those stories reminds me of those good old days when my parents rewarded me with more play time for the high grades I earned in different exams as a kid.
So you mean to tell me Devil May Cry was an RE4 prototype? That's some wild shit! I wound up playing RE4 around 2011, long after it had already been released. It still delivered incredibly well. It felt like the last good resident evil game in some ways, for about a decade.
3.5 was the prototype , no re4 (2005) . dmc1 out on (2001) & exists many re titles between them. code veronica (2000's more similar) , outbreaks ,dead aim, etc.
Yo great video man, I loved it definitely one of your best, I especially loved the typewriter sounds that would play during chapter cuts, yea RE4 definitely paved the way for many games and game series especially the ones that came from the game
@@MorgueOfficialMusic Lol Regardless of how you feel about it, RE4 has influenced a generation of game design, and it’s impact on gaming will be felt for many decades to come if not forever.
Same man. The fact that it was released on so many platforms says a lot. This game is praised by many. I'm glad the main guy or guys and the whole team still kept going after Resident Evil 2 otherwise we wouldn't have games like Resident Evil 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 , other Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 2 and 3 remake and also Resident Evil 4 remake on its way soon. I'm playing Resident Evil 4 once again before I play the remake.
