How Rihanna went from Beyoncé comparisons to RIHANNA! if you’re reading this description comment a “☀️” emoji instagram: imthehonestboy twitter: imthehonestboy business inquires: muyhonest@gmail.com
The media used Beyoncé image to help market rihanna as the more relatable artist who is down to earth because Beyoncé came off as robotic and a perfecting. Beyoncé was the good girl and rihanna the bad girl. It’s sad that beyonce perfection for her craft is seen as a negative when talent is so low in the industry
I agree. They also don’t take into account that Beyoncé comes off as “so perfect” because she had to. When Destiny’s Child went through their line up change, all the blame went to Beyoncé. People were quick to label her an evil bloodsucking diva. She had to do damage control and overly prove herself as a sweet, southern girl that was completely different from her onstage persona. Now they use that very thing to say she’s “too perfect.”
talent isn't low. and the reasoning behind how beyoncé is viewed is because she's a black female. we're expected to work harder than most but also not too hard otherwise we're cold, aggressive, unrelatable. impossible standards. like how while riri was initially viewed as more likeable she was still put down for not being as skilled. perfection is a bunch of bs because none of it comes together. it's supposed to be unreachable. it's so annoying because while the mainstream is filled with so much incredible work and people. it would be so much more if we let more people shine and didn't push them to the bottom.
It was t the “perfection”, it was that Beyoncé was the girl we want our daughters to be. Beautiful,, confident, a good girl who always strives to do it all and will never stumble out of a club drunk and will never juggle multiple men. She married the guy she met at 20 but made him wait until her career was sound. Rihanna on the other hand was the rebel daughter we wouldn’t mind but she makes you worry. she’s a party girl but not a drug addict. She got into relationships with bad men and kept going back to them. She’s had a baby with a sketchy fool who now has a gun case hanging over his head but at least she didn’t marry him. She doesn’t practise at her craft but she’s created an excellent fallback plan so you just know she’s going to be ok. You still worry though.
Exactly me as a black female with black friends have to agree with you that we saw Beyonce as a good girl and Rihanna as the bad gal plan and simple I don't remember comparing any of their songs because they both been originally their self since the beginning I mean of course some things are going to be a like because Beyonce's husband is both their managers so he's going to get them similar brand deals endorsements cloths just because they're under the same management and it's wayyyy easier to cut a deal if you can get two for one at the same time. (< not for the price but opportunity)
@@fjwjejxnwnkksckcmwwnwn Rita was compared to Rihanna and not Beyonce. Rita also openly expressed her dislike for the comparison so....she got less backing cause Rih was the main for Jay. They didn't want to dim Rih's light especially cause Rita would sell more cause she's racially unambiguous if she got the same backing.
It's just sad to see how the media and fans are comparing them. We have to learn to appreciate the talent of the two of them instead of turning them against each other. Beyoncé is Beyoncé and Rihanna is Rihanna. PeriodT
That's human nature. We relate to something we know before. Therefore it was easy to find similarities and we felt familiar to Rihanna... later we discovered her own persona
@@bluedalia1114 So did they not all not write songs for both rihanna and beyonce ? I can name all of the songs. Why are you bringing up her vocal ability and live performance ? You beehive members need serious help. I'm giving props to these songwriters for writing classics for these two icons. AGAIN, seek therapy.
@@ganasde65 right and at that time Rihanna was the underdog cuz Teairra Mari and Amerie already had #1 hits and she only had Pon De Replay. Shontelle was already poppin that time but look at Rihanna now... no one is touching her among her peers. I am so proud of her journey. A real rags to riches and a self made billionaire
@@arinrayscumdump Neither Amerie nor Teairra Mari had number one hit lol. Amerie best performance on the billboard hot 100 was "One Thing" (2005) which peaked at number 8 and Teairra Mari's best performing song was her solo debut single "Make Me" which only peaked at number 15. It's actually Rihanna who came out swinging with "Pon Da Replay" the same year which peaked at number 2 on the hot 100 and would've been number 1 if It wasn't for Mariah Carey's We Belong Together
it's crazy how similar they seemed when rihanna first started out - now they couldn't be more opposite (in the best way possible). Their almost like polar opposites of each other.
Musically, yes, but Rihanna distanced from her fans too since she became a billionaire and only talks to them when she wants to sell something lol (same as Beyoncé but she didn't need to marketed herself as "relatable" lmao)
@@panchooceano7717 I don’t even think it’s because she became a billionaire. She’s just more busy these days. She has multiple businesses, and she is now a mom. Back in the day she had more time.
@@panchooceano7717 no she doesn’t…you clearly don’t be on the media, bcs riri is always seen in public talking to her fans, & not just for the cameras, but as a human being.
@@omarslayz it mostly Aaliyah fans that are mad tho, go check out any Aaliyah video and you'll see her stans mentioning and hating Beyoncé in almost every comment, while Bey fans minds their business on Beyoncés videos lol
@@panchooceano7717 Exactly, Beyoncé was still in DC in 2001 while Aaliyah was a solo act. Nobody was comparing the two in the media while Aaliyah was alive. If anything Aaliyah was compared to the other solo female black teen stars peers of her time like Brandy, Monica or Mya. But bc Beyoncé broke into the biggest black female star of her generation after she dropped her debut "Dangerously in Love" in 2003 and was able to sustain her relevancy, success, and cultural dominance for 20 years, it triggered the Aaliyah stans who thought that she would be the biggest if she was still alive lol. Beyoncé is celebrated as the greatest living entertainer/performer so it pisses them of
Rih is definitely my fave. She had a once in a lifetime opportunity and she wasted no time. Pumping out music consistently, topping the charts, going on tours, doing brand deals, building her image and her brands too... 16 years after her debut and she's the youngest self made billionaire. That's the most insane work ethic I've seen from any artist.
Well work ethic and Rihanna doesn't belong in the same sentence, she and her Savage x Fenty were recently fined because of the scamming and fraud that financially harmed its consumers since it launched.
You definitely missed a few things. She built her fan base with music year after year. Putting out hits with the best producers and song writers. It was strategic bc she wanted to become rich on her own and not just with music, just like jay did. She learnt from the best
@Day Jayz has no parts in fenty beauty or Fenty skin etc ( that is solely rih & lv). Why would lv need Jayz $?? You might wanna google the deal and how it’s 50/50 with Rihanna and lv. Jayz owns 3% shares in Savagexfenty & he only invested after rih had already started it. Jayz isn’t even the majority owner of roc nation as it’s main owner is live nation ( micheal Rapino ) and liberty media ( John C Malone). I think y’all forget that Jayz left def jam in 2006 and rih was still there till 2014 when her contract ended. The only album rih did jointly ( roc nation and Rihanna’s westbury road ) jay leaked on tidal and fumbled her roll her. Y’all give Jayz way to much credit for Rihanna’s hard work!
@Day A whole 3% In sf and they only have that because Jay brown found investor’s for savagexfenty ( the year after Rihanna started it). That 3% was their part for finding $50m in investments. Rihanna signed up to music management under rn in 2010.. she was NOT always managed by them or under them. Rih did NOT cut a 360 deal and Rn has no parts in her deals outside of music. She has spoken on this several times. She wanted more freedom after leaving def jam and made sure ALL her deals outside of music are ran by her and her team only. Stop the lying!!!! Lv has public statements on how they approached rih ( she had just done a deal with mac) and lv literally poached her as she was about to work with mac on fenty beauty but she went with lv. Jz and jay brown has no parts in it! Nice try tho. You just lied.. show me Jayz or jay brown on Rihanna’s loud album ( Alex the kid, the ambassador, ester dean, the runners, stargaze etc all produced, ex producer not no Jayz or J brown), talk that talk ( ex producers are Danny d & TimBlacksmith), unapologetic ( again no Jayz or Jay brown) and this album is under labels def jam and Rihanna’s westbury road. Anti still not Jayz in the credits ( only jay brown) . Let’s get a few things stg … Jayz doesn’t even own the majority of roc nation and from reports co-owns shared in it worth about 5%. He has no real power over there ( just the face). All that lying and trying lower what rih has done isn’t working for you.. I’m an actual fan that very much looks deeper into the deals and names and yes the credits on albums.
Rihanna made it cause she was not afraid to experiment herself. Her style in music and fashion changed , and living in the black woman world , it kept us interested and talking . Rihanna influenced a lot of black women hairstyles, especially after 2007. I really enjoy how she wasn’t afraid to take risks, professionally.
Very well stated. But I wonder why Rita Ora failed. They tried that very same dynamic with her, marketing her as the next Rihanna. Well I know why. They tried to make Rita a carbon copy of Rihanna, while Rihanna was only an influence of Beyoncé. As you eloquently stated, Rihanna then came into her own, and found her own look, style and vision. Rita is very status quo, and is like every other pop girl of her era which is ok, but you gotta have the consistent hits to break out.
She failed same reason everyone else failed didn’t choose smash hit. Whether none was presented to her or she couldn’t hear it Idk. Rihanna heard a hit and will stalk the creators of it. She stalked Dream for Umbrella and PND for Work.
@Tena kenzy overseas I believe in the UK? She still could become that global phenom (if that’s something she even wants). she just needs the right song(s).
@@hyperiondragon Rita ora time passed she will never be a man pop girl she has a couple hits in the UK and Europe but that's it.sge was supposed to be on Rihanna level she smashed for one summer and never maintained longevity or interest
Rihanna can’t sing or dance. She had that exotic edge and ofcourse colorism (African Americans love lightskin and biracial women) I love her music and that she is apologetically rude gyal but let’s be real.
I remember when If It's Loving That You Want came out and I thought 'she's copying Beyonce' lol at my young age but yeah they were definitely trying to market her as Beyonce. She would've had no career if she didn't branch out with Good Girl Gone Bad even though you can see they took some ideas from Fefe Dobson's style for that era. One thing I will say about Rihanna is she kept reinventing herself and she knew how to choose hits. She was able to appeal to a very wide audience and kept churning out hits.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 and in choosing song writers. Also white people just love pop more than rnb, in europe at least, and they are the one controlling the media. Beyonce is an rnb artist, although she did some pop songs here and there. Rihanna on the other hand is completely opposite she is a pop artist with a few rnb songs.
It just reminded me why I love Rihanna💅🏾😂 not only did she mold herself while fighting with her label to do so & WIN! She took it a step further & became the most wealthy Female Billionaire in the game but established her legacy/ Impact/ importance & Beauty in 3 entire different industries (Music, Fashion, Beauty) unlike any other woman of our time, LEGENDARIH👑💅🏾
When Rihanna hears a hit she will stalk the creators of it. She stalked Dream for Umbrella and PND for Work. She told Ester Dean no you wrote that for me. That’s what separates her from everyone who flopped. She knows a hit and she works to make it hers.
Rihana is inteligent , well spoken taleneted creatuve and she is earning billions with her fenty . She was a legend in the 2000s and will forever be . She is not someone you can overshadow .
I definitely feel like Rihanna’s edginess (and I’d even throw nicki in there) prompted Beyoncé to channel a more edgy image. Her self titled album and videos reflected that…veering off into something else, I think as we shifted into more..alternative fashion, she began to adopt solanges sense of style, cinematography etc
Keep in mind that Beyonce has influences like Prince, Madonna, and Donna Summer to draw her "edge" from. She doesn't have to take notes from Rih or Nicki, lol.
Not just Rihanna. They all were: Christina Milian, Ciara, Shontelle etc. and then once Rihanna changed things up in 2007, they followed suit. Rihanna however was following Kelis, which alot of people dont know about because Kelis was never at the exposure point of Rihanna or Beyonce.
It will always baffles me that people even bring their name together. I guess them being the biggest black pop stars of their generation didn't help. BUT keep in mind Beyonce came from a different generation of music and 26 yrs later she is still keeping up with younger acts that debuted ex. Rihanna. Her longevity and artistry is unmatched
@@jameltanderson sold more in singles because she made club hits 💀Beyonce still sold more albums and all her albums are critically acclaimed. All 7 albums have gotten 1 billion streams on Spotify. Something rih doesn't have...
I never had a clue that Beyoncé and Rhianna were being compared growing up. They always seemed like two completely different planets/worlds. Beyoncé is more of an old school performer, Rhianna is a modern radio hit Queen. We need both flavors to enjoy life 😂
Rihanna definitely had the backing of Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z to help her. Because of the slight resemblance she was most easily compared to Beyoncé by her record label, as opposed to Teairra Marie and Rita Ora, so that’s who they decided to push. Jay-Z was over Def Jam when she was there and when he left he took her to Rocnation with him. The video shows that even in her Good Girl Gone Bad era they were still putting Beyoncé’s name on the covers of Rihanna’s CDs. They wanted to make her “their Beyoncé” just like Sony tried to make Mariah Carey “their Whitney Houston” back in the day. Not to mention all the collaborations Jay and his artist Kanye did with Rihanna to keep her name up there. Umbrella, Run the Town,… the list goes on. She definitely had the backing of Beyoncé’s husband to keep her career afloat. To this day, besides Beyoncé, no other female artist throws up the Roc quite as hard as Rihanna does.
It for sure proves Beyoncé’s influence on other artists. That’s why I don’t consider them peers. They’re both respectfully iconic in their own right but Beyoncé for sure paved the way for artists like Rihanna.
@@tias.6675 absolutely not I followed Beyoncé’s career since I heard her on the radio in 1997 with destiny’s child. You can’t just discredit her career just to force them on the same level. Of course Rihanna has surpassed Beyoncé in some of areas but that’s ok she has her own lane.
@@tias.6675 So Destiny’s Child is irrelevant in Beyoncé’s success??? She’s been in the industry almost a decade before Rihanna’s debut. They aren’t peers.
Beyoncé is the only one of them who’s been heavily compared to the greats before her… Michael, Janet, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and as a member of DC being compared to TLC and the Supremes. She’s cut from a different cloth for sure
Beyoncé’s career has been a very interesting one, - I’ve always found that Beyonce name to always be attached to other female artists, in a attempt to ‘uplift’ the other. Which is something, she’s been critiqued through her entire career. But then again, she has been at the top for a v long time so I guess that’s what comes with the game.
But they wouldn’t do that if they didn’t see her as the standard deep down inside. They don’t use other artists that way because they don’t feel like it holds the same weight; they’d just never say it that way.
Beyoncé & Rihanna were to the 2000’s what Cardi & Nicki are today….In the 90s it was Mariah & Whitney…the music industry’s oldest trick in the book…take what’s working already & try to imitate & capitalize off the OG’s success smh…I’m glad Rihanna found her own lane though because I didn’t start liking her until she did.
Beyoncè don't even have a song with together with Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams even Letoya Luckett both Beyoncè and Rihanna the most successful black artists of the last 20 years you'd think they been made a song together.
Beyoncé did Naïve with Solo. Destiny’s Child also did the Proud Family theme song with Solo as well as Little Drummer Boy from their 8 Days of Christmas album
When are black women with darker skin going to get the same love/attention/chances that black women with lighter skin have received? The media is biased and markets what it can sell to society. Big changes need to come -- artists like Lizzo are pushing those changes forward.
How could you compare….Beyoncé vocally is not to be played 💯 Love Rihanna but 😂😂😂 Business wise they are very similar 💪🏾 Either way women are winning 🏆

She is ya basic pop act, as is Beyonce imo, but Rhianna has style appeal and a personality, personality and style can carry you in this business. Rhianna is likable.
Beyoncé is an Artist and Rihanna is basically a better Britney Spears. Rih has lots of hits but non of them say much just basic pop while Beyoncé has real artistic appeal
Check your bias, both those other women than Queen b are artists in their own right, don’t u forgot one of these ladies got to perform with the king of pop so he gave her his stamp
Irreplaceable was written for Rihanna by Ne-Yo but she did not like the song so he asked Mirah Carey she said no so Beyonce said she would do the song you can't say that Take a bow sounds l similar to Irreplaceable because Ne-Yo wrote for her.
Some say Beyonce picked Rihanna because she wasn't a threat to Beyonce. How was she not a threat? She was a light skinned and young just like Beyonce, and straight off the boat Caribbean girl. I would see her as a threat if I was in Beyonce's shoes, not to mention, Beyonce's father was said to have hit on Farrah, who was also a young, light skinned, hazel eyes girl. 🤔
I'm sorry...I love Rih and can relate to her with our Caribbean background, but to this day I can't understand how she is compared to Beyonce...This shows how there was/is no strong artist to challenge Beyonce......One is a icon and one is a legend...
@@angechrisman1694 it's my opinion first and foremost also legends are not forgotten to show you how much respect and honor rihanna reflects...her country goes out to made her one of their national heroes...as far as Beyonce goes i don't see that happening for America no hate. I think it was more their look more than anything lol it was starting to get more racial ambiguous in the music industry if payed attention before them the music industry was a LITTLE more diverse . As in today it’s more biracial than anything
If Rihanna was ever marketed as a "rival" to Bey it was pure calculated strategy that would never have been serious or harmful because Rihanna is managed by Jay Z's company and no one working there would want that smoke
Wow I didn't know about the comparisons. But so glad Rihanna and Beyonce never fought. It feels like there is always beef in the music world. When there shouldn't be.
From my understanding Beyonce is the one who gave the co-sign for Rihanna. At the time Tiara Marie was the forerunner, but Beyince was able to see Rihanna's drive so she gave Jay-Z the push.
Rihanna is more Rock n' Roll, more Island Girl, ya know. Bey is beautiful and a Great singer and performer. As is Rihanna. Rihanna has done Amazing collaborations with Eminem, T.I., Jay-Z and Kanye(of course), crazy-ass Niki Minaj(who started out as an actress...and maybe stayed one.. definitely), etc. Rihanna has a much more cool-girl, edgy but chill, High-fashion but also Island Life-vibe, real and genuine persona... and real life personality probably- Both always stunning, but very different styles from the beginning(Bey- hyper sexualized "Boss". Riri- sexy-cute to "good girl gone bad" to Real life Boss of Her many Fenty Brand Companies. Sky is the Limit Baby 💓💓💓
Rihanna been the black JLo lol, from singing and keeping the same vocals of demo's Esther Dean sent her (S&M, What's My Name, Where Have You Been, etc) to steals Bebe Rexha's vocals on her live performances of The Monster, it is crazy. Beyoncé may take some credit for songwriting, but stealing vocals it's insane and where ppl needs to draw the line, i'm glad she's artistically superior in that way.
Why are you lying? Rihanna has sang all those songs live several times and she literally credits anybody that does the backround vocals. How was Bebe her issue? That was an em song. Well neither her or Jlo has stolen. Those vocals are backgrounds. But Rih does copy the demo exactly she doesn’t change anything just imitates what she heard.
Ok but WHY audition in a hotel at 16? Why not some place public like American idol does ? Just a thought . Just cuz some places have certain age of consent doesn’t mean everything is ok . Also what mind could imagine adultery Will HELP someone’s career over Beyonce 😱😂
I like seeing their similarities and differences. I appreciate both and I don't weigh either above another. I'm so happy she shared a video of her son on TikTok
I think Rihanna is an industry plant. She has the talent of Nelly Furtado and pretty average beauty. Nothing about her rise to fame makes sense. A talent show with her voice? I'm not even a Beyonce fan but when they call Beyonce a plant, I just always wonder why Rihanna is so immune to the drama that plagues other artists. She was marketed as a DV survivor but she's actually a DV abuser along with Chris but did not get the same treatment because he went too far. Multiple women in the industry who are known to be very kind have been bullied by Rihanna. They've spoken out about it but it was muted. We have stars being dragged for being bullies in their past and forced to address it but she doesn't address it. When she was dating the Prince, she tried putting her hands on him. Then the media scrubbed her image. But we all somehow know about Solange though. Rihanna is also known for making so many foundation shades but there was already Pat McGrath. Many users in the Beauty side of RU-vid say that while Fenty has many shades, it's not balanced. Pat McGrath wasn't as rich but she was doing something for black girls while not selling her brand. Then Rihanna's brand became big and is owned 50% by LVMH with several white hands in it. Business woman? Beyonce gets so much shade for being the cause of destroying other women's careers but all those women weren't put aside for Beyonce, it was for Rihanna. Rihanna's hair styles were chosen for her but she now says those were hee choices for her hair brand. Her clothes were chosen for her, but she's a creative for her clothing brand. This woman was the PERFECT candidate. Jay-Z kind of knew it halfway through but Rihanna's label saw it first. She performed on stage with Amerie and even if Beyonce said something, she still wasn't better than Amerie. Rihanna's rise is so suspicious.
Rihanna was NEVER an RnB artist. Her roots were reggae, dancehall if anything but not American RnB. Beyoncé comes from an RnB girl group. One of the biggest girl group of all time. They are not the same. Rihanna doesn't sing like a RnB singer
Funny how things allegedly went! Back then they told a story about Rihanna being discovered by Jay Z on a beach in Barbados asking the beauty if she could sing too...
never had any beef? with both of their best selling days long behind them (Lemonade, Renaissance, Anti, Lift me up all had very low sales compared to what they put out in the beginning of their carreers) these two have never collabed. Not a peep on a song, not a foot on the other one's stage. In 15 years. Same label since the get go. I'd say there's plenty of beef there. And with the ugly dude's rep of banging chicks on his label, all the rumous going around 10+ years ago about him and Ri (funny how they got squashed EXACTLY like the Asap Rocky/Amina Muadi rumors) and his cheating track record since married, it's obvious why
