For a big part of his career, it seemed Robert Pattinson would forever be associated with the Twilight Saga. Though, he wasn't the biggest fan of Twilight in general, so Robbert Pattinson set out to change audience perspective. Working on some critically acclaimed indie projects, Robert Pattinson escaped Twilight by showing off his range as an actor, and choosing the right projects at the right time. But what movie specifically separated him from the sparkling vampires of Twilight?

What some people don't get about Robert is that he's not a bad actor, Edward Cullen is a bad character, and he portrayed him marvelously. He was so good that everyone thought it was him and his acting, but he was actually living the boring cardboard character he had to play for that film. But he wanted more, he wanted to grow and learn, and he has done it in an amazing way.

Um, the character is what the actor, writer, and director bring to it. To imply the actor has no responsibility in the character's portrayal is to not understanding the process of bringing a character to life on the screen.

Robert Pattinson played the part of Edward Cullen very well. An emotionally stunted vampire who’s stuck in a purgatory like state of being permanently 17, full of self loathing but at the same time has to exercise a lot self control to not drink his human girlfriends blood doesn’t fit the definition of boring.

As someone who read the books (I loved them as a teenager, don’t judge😂), Pattinson literally played Edward EXACTLY as he was written. His character was awkward and super corny. He wasn’t even acting badly in twilight, he was just portraying what was given to him.

I read all the books too! It was light entertainment for teenagers, nothing to be ashamed of. he took the batman role seriously. he got into shape. Like there are some characters which only one can play for dafoe it would be his green goblin, no one can replace him their or brando in godfather, he is the only guy who can pull it off.

Robert Pattinson really is a quintessential example of an extremely talented actor getting a tough break with a casting that would make pretty much anyone a bit of a cultural outcast. I think Andrew Garfield's career is evolving in a somewhat similar way to Pattinson's. Going from feeling trapped in the movie making "machine" after Amazing Spider-Man 2, using theatre as a back door in the same way Pattinson used indie films, and finally making a comeback in blockbusters with Indie sensibilities. Tik Tik Boom was his Lighthouse Edit: I know Garfield and Pattinson have not had totally identical careers which is why I said "Somewhat similar". The biggest difference being Pattinson had a far deeper hole to dig himself out of while Garfield had a lot of success before and after TASM 2. I mainly just thought they had interesting parallels in that they both got road blocked by really bad Hollywood blockbusters and had to do substantial work to get back on track

You didn't mention his role in The King (Netflix) which in my opinion cemented the studios opinion on Pattinson as a true 'name'. His presence in that movie, which is basically reduced to a cameo, steals every scene.

I honestly don't think he was bad in Twilight. Yeah the movies are dumb but I don't think Robert's acting is that bad. It's more the script's fault than his. I knew from Goblet of Fire that he's a great actor. Most people just underestimated him and he proved them all wrong.

Same. I thought he was Edward come alive - now whether that's good or bad is its own question 😂 I saw some behind the scenes back then, and recall that most if not all, the cringe moments were inserted by the director and Stephanie Meyer. They literally made him catch that apple to emulate the book cover dozens of times 🙄

Pattinson's case is the perfect example of diamond staying brilliant even in the dirtiest mud. He was born to act. He got that talent. Thus he's not afraid to explore. The exciting thing is that he's still relatively young as an actor. When he hits 40 and beyond, we will see more of him.

I really liked this take, the tone this analysis was written in was a refreshing mix of empathetic and really well researched /informed. This quality of youtubing kind of parallels the redeemed artistic integrity the video was talking about, of finding great analytical content the platform can provide for me after sometimes finding it difficult to wade through droves of film analysis videos relying on controversy or gossip and regurgitative "top ten yadda yadda" formats. Cheers! Just thought I'd shout you out since you did such a great job of highlighting the triumph of a guy who rose through the rough.

Thank you for this video. I never saw Twilight, and always knew Pattinson as “the guy from the vampire movies for tween girls.” Then I saw the Lighthouse and I was blown away. Because of that, I didn’t hesitate to see The Batman. But ever since I’d been wondering how he had managed to pivot like that. Like you said, it’s a feat rarely seen. I have tremendous respect for the guy and I’m glad you’re sharing a bit of his history so audiences can better understand how dedicated and hardworking Pattinson really is. He deserves the accolades he’s getting. Great video!

I have been happy for him since seeing him hit mainstream success again this time with respect. I had little doubt he would be great in The Batman when it was announced, for years I have seen decent and great actors have their reputation diminished by their roles and (usually) the writing behind them, not by the talent of the actors themselves - comes with the territory of being a Star Wars fan LOL. Plus, while I haven't seen it, I heard The Lighthouse was a good film too.

Yeah, I don't understand. She is made of wood, is expressionless and is one of those people that always basically play themselves. She is not very different from character to character and we she tries to emote a little bit, it comes as unnatural and cringy. How some people not only get to be actors but even become that big while being terrible, is beyond me. At least Nic Cage is crazy and kind of hilarious in his own special way. But this woman has nothing (at least imo).

One of the best videos about Pattinson's evolution... I loved his first acting (How To Be is still one of my faves) all the way to his amazing performance in The Batman!!! He gave a soul to each single character he played, good and bad... He's funny and kinda chaotic in his interviews as much as he is dedicated and fully immersed in the role while he's playing... On a side note, he did a great Edward Cullen! One might not like the franchise, and he didn't seem to like it either, but his character was spot on! Can't wait to see his next movie!! 🌟

I know it’s super cool and hip to hate on things like Twilight with the hurr hurr “tWiLiGhT sux” routine but tbh most of the acting was exactly as it was intended to be. Robert and Stewart played these characters spot on; it’s just a cheesy, teen romance that isn’t nearly as awful or bad as people like to dogpile with their internet + Nickelback takes. Not every performance needs to come with the baggage of 3 years of getting into character. Sometimes the story is the point, and sometimes that story is simple. Has absolutely no problem with the first 3 Twilight films. Last two weren’t great though.
