There are limitations of Solid rocket motors like Controllability, throttle ability and low burn duration and thus even with it's high thrust and shelf life, we need to rely on liquid engines in some stages. Here I've explained the working principle of liquid engines in the simplest way possible.

I think the answer of your question would be that solid fuels are more denser than liquid fuels so that would increase the mass of the rocket altogether. Quoting you "mass is the enemy of proplulsion. So this reason sounds plausible.Also,we have more control over the thrust provided by liquid engines than the solid ones,so I think this is another reason space x don't use solid engines. But again if things were this simple,I would be working in space x right now 😆

SpaceX's Rockets first stage boosters are reusable and they are not only designed to launch payload to orbit but in addition they have to return back to the ground which is a really complex task and requires multiple ignitions in combustion chamber which is not fulfilled by solid propulsion engine. Another reason to use liquid propulsion engine is that they need lots of fuel to launch and land the boosters which is not possible by solid boosters as once ignited its almost impossible to stop the combustion and they will end up having no/low fuel for landing. So, in a nutshell liquid engine provides all the requirements needed for a reusable rockets namely low fuel requirements, multiple ignitions in combustion chamber and above that liquid engines come with a facility of controlling the thrust and its direction which is very essential for the landing of boosters. Adding to this, I am a beginner for learning rocket sciences and do enjoy your lectures.

@prabhatbharti4881
@prabhatbharti4881 4 года назад
Yep, we can't throttle the solid rocket motors, as it ends it's ignition when the fuel is completely exhausted moreover they are dangerous and also called as ' Fireworks ' in branch of rocketry, where as space x reuses it's First stage boosters which needs to be throttled in order to land the boosters precisely on a landing site ( drone ship or ground landing ), the technology is so fun to learn and innovative for me it was like he ( Elon Musk ) used whatever the resources are available here and created a masterpiece ;). Yet many great innovations are yet to happen. I hope one day India will also master cryogenics :D

SpaceX engines are Merlin Engines which uses RP1 as propllant. They also perform landing back to the ground or sea plateform thus they need to be throtteled. Throtling capability lies with liquid engines only. Thus Liquid Engines by SpaceX.

Using the same combustion chamber for turbine we can regulate/maintain the rpm of centrifugal pump more easily so that they can pump some what more amount of fuel and oxygen mixture and increase the thrust. Then why we use other combustion chamber ? Which have different pressure generated in it. Using same combustion chamber will be easy n will decrease the weight too which is a main factor.

Imagine that you are on a street with houses marked 1 through n. There is a house in between (x) such that the sum of the house numbers to the left of it equals the sum of the house numbers to its right. If n is between 50 and 500, what are n and x?'

Everyone in the comment section are thinking space x uses liquid engines just because they are stable. They are not stable on themselves only. They are stabelized by active thrust vector control which is due to different sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, gps, barometric pressure sensors and other subcomputers present in flight computer of the rocket.

Spacex does not use solid boosters because solid boosters do not allow for good regulation of thrust(i.e. increasing or decreasing thrust). Another problem with solid boosters is that they are hard to turn off and on again, which is an important requirement for spacex since they are building reusable rocket engines. Am i correct?

After separation they want to bring back the rocket boosters, to do so they need controllable combustion that’s why they use liquid motor engine in boosters which fullfill the desired needs instead of solid rocket motor engines ,because they can’t...
